The ebay system is built on feedback and it is the only means of establishing how trustworthy someone is; by not leaving 'appropriate' feedback you are defeating the whole point of feedback, 'not' leaving appropriate feedback achieves a lot less than the converse. TBH you can actually lawfully pursue someone to sell you an item that you have won on ebay, when you sign up to ebay it is part of the T&C, in theory no one ever does because it isn't worth the hassle.

This is quite a cut and dry matter; the seller has stated categorically that he wanted more than he got (should have put a reserve on then) and as a result won't sell, ergo, breach of contract and deserves neg. It isn't like he has suddenly contracted a terminal illness or had a death in the family and as a result couldn't contact the buyer.
I don't see he's been at all dishonest (in fact quite the contrary), or done anything untrustworthy, again he's been quite honest and said "look, it's gone for less that I expected, can we cancel ?"

Dishonest and untrustworthy to me is saying something's like new when it isn't, or not posting something that's been paid for.

I thought the feedback thing was to inform buyers about sellers selling dodgy or broken/faulty items, or not posting stuff, basically dishonest sellers.

I'm not the seller by the way, and have no affiliation with him or her, I'm just seeing this becoming yet another trial by Basschat witch hunt :) .

When you auction something you take the risk that you don't know what buyers will be willing to pay beforehand - you might get lucky and have competing buyers drive the price up, or interest might not be that high, and you get a poor price. You don't get to withdraw your lot if you didn't set a reserve and you are not happy with the final price, that approach is simple abuse of the system.

He may be being honest, but he's also breaking the eBay terms and conditions and undermining the whole concept of an auction. If he wanted a guaranteed return he should have put a reserve on the item or a buy it now price.

He deserves negative feedback. Leave it and move on.

I guess he should've been dishonest and told the OP that the bass had fallen or been knocked off the stand, and was broken :) .
That behaviour deserves negative feedback too.

He could always have been honest and sold the item for what he wanted, using a reserve or a buy it now price.

To be clear... ebay works whereby you list something and if it reaches a minimum amount you sell it to that person; any deviation from that is breaching a moral and legal contract. Simples!

Now the minimum amount is set by the seller. Absolutely no other person decides that and it can work one of three ways; i) you set an amount that it sells for no more, no less - Buy It Now. ii) you set a reserve amount and if it doesn't reach this, you don't have to sell it. iii) you sell it with no reserve and you get as much as the highest bidder wishes to bid (as happened in this case).

There is no witch-hunt... a buyer (or not as the case may be) came on here asking for 'help' or advise on what to do; the sellers 'honesty' about refusing to sell it has nothing to do with it and apart from anything else he could have been fishing for the buyer to revise his offer up over. Added to which he needs the buyers support to cancel the sale because if he doesn't then the seller doesn't get his fees back.

Me personally, I'd pay through paypal, demand the money back if he doesn't sell it and then leave negative feedback. Sorry if this sounds harsh or offends the seller but it's a lesson in life! :(

Circumvention of ebay's BIN or reserve fees is dishonest.
Not selling to someone who went to the trouble of watching and bidding on an item with the expectation that they'd get said item if they won, is morally wrong.

Feedback is on any part of the sale, seller etc,. It is not an honesty rating, it is feeding back on the seller. This seller totally deserves negative feedback.
Just imagine for a second if 50% of sellers did this and decided their item didn't sell enough and the winning bidder can't have the item they have legally won. Basic rules of auctions, reserve set or you have to take whatever it gets.

Or he could have just listed the item properly? If he didn't want it to go cheaply, he's the only one who can set a reserve and he should've done so. He deserves negative feedback to ensure nobody else wastes their time trying to deal with him IMO.

Personally, I do feel the "new, other" and "I bought this 6 months ago or so" bass in reality being a used, 11 months old bass is at least stretching matters, and not really completely honest. He obviously did not want to sell a 1 year old, used bass, and willingly opted for the vague version.
He probably does not deserve a witch hunt, but wasn't exactly behaving stellarly either.

BTW, I see no witch hunt yet, but yes, we may be heading in that direction if we're not careful.

Terrible behaviour.

I've sold bass gear at times on ebay, sometimes you do ok, other times the buyer gets a bargain. If you can't accept that, then you shouldn't use it. Simple as, that's the gamble.

As was said earlier, you can't have your cake, and eat it. I'd report it, seller should be banned for that.

Dear Non-Seller.

Look at the shiytstorm of bad will you've stired up on here.
Next time, or such a specialised item like a 7 string bass- just pay your basschat subs and advertise it on here!
cheers

When it's listed again, or any thing else they sell for that matter, make sure you place the winning bid...then write back and say that you couldn't possibly buy it for that price and you are only willing to buy it for what it's worth....

I am sure they will see that you are being reasonable....

Edit
Don't listen to me I'm full of useless advice, you may be legally obliged to pay....:)

I sold a bunch of stuff on Ebay recently, I put reserves on stuff I didn't want to go too cheap and no reserve on the other stuff, most of it made less than I wanted but that's an auction I didn't start cancelling the sales because it didn't reach the price I hoped.

Poor show from this seller, deserves negative feedback

His version seems different......

I hadn't seen any thread on here about it. The buyer and I discussed the matter and I was under the assumption it was resolved. If it isn't then the buyer should have voiced his opinion to me during our discussions, which were on a very friendly and amicable basis. My PM to you asked you to not voice these issues on the thread because it is not to do with the sale of the instrument. In the interest of clarify the bass sold on ebay for a very low price which I was not prepared to let it go for, I spoke to the buyer and he was happy to cease the transaction. I said I would be placing it on basschat and told him what price I would list it for, there were no bad words so I'm not sure why there are bad words now. Any issues not about the sale of this bass should not be listed here.

What a scumbag ...out him.
Nice, real nice... <_<

This thread is about me and my 7 string jazz....

Having just phoned fiatcoupe he tells me this thread was started prior to actualy contact by me to him regarding this... I made contact with him pretty much as soon as the auction ended, but alas i was too late and this thread was started...

This is a bit of a dangerous precedent here... it seems that a fair chunk of band wagon jumping has occurred without people actually knowing the full facts.

Luckily fiatcoupe is very reasonable and our chat (over the phone minutes ago) cleared up a few things in terms of timelines etc. The end result being we did indeed amicibly agree to not go through with the sale, (I am happy to provide text message transcripts of our convos if he is happy for me to disclose them)

Nothing is a miss here, nothing sketchy was done, nothing underhanded and nothing that deserves me being called a scum bag... which is just childish in my opinion.

I understand that it is not a popular decision to bail out of a sale, but fiatcoupe was fine with it and we talked out the situation and ended on a friendly basis.

Please take note from this and dont witch hunt until both sides are heard. I have a decent reputation on here, and don't really want it destroyed over a misunderstanding.

Thanks,

Russ.
