Song suggestions please

Recommended Posts

I know this is a really lazy way of doing it, but it does actually make sense bearing in mind the depth of playing experience here on BC.
I'm in a covers band. The line up is three brass, three vocals (1m & 2f) and a four piece back line.
We've consistently struggled to agree on decent material recently, not for want of trying I might add!
I would say the most successful new pick we've had is the song below and I have to say we've nailed it, including the middle section which isn't In the CD version.

Although I'm happy to play anything, I'm not very 21st century in my musical outlook.

So needs to have brass, can be male or female vocal lead, needs to be "popular", needs to be recent, needs to be funky.

Hit me up. Feel free to bias your opinions on excellent bass lines.

I was in a 9-piece Stax/Motown-style band for a while, but we adapted other songs, too...
These are some that I can remember - they're probably in your set already:

Cee Lo green - Forget You
B52s - Love Shack
Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar
Paloma Faith - Stone Cold Sober
The Third Degree - Mercy
Eli 'Paperboy' Reed - Come And Get It

Some not so 'recent', but fun to play:

Tina Turner - Proud Mary
Wilson Pickett - New Orleans
Eddie Floyd - Knock On Wood
Sam and Dave - Soul Man

We did about two hours' worth - the set goes on and on.

The Third Degree - Mercy

That is a superb cover. Everything the Duffy one should have been but wasn't. IMO etc.

An oldie but Goodie - Vehicle, Ides of March?
A bit heavier but certainly funky - Always on the Run, Lenny Kravits (and Slash)

Edit - not reformed Elco Jones, by any chance, Warren?

I am presuming that you specifically want suggestions of songs from very recently, like the Bruno Mars track, in which case I can't really think of any , because most recent chart music seems to just pass me by, to be honest with you. However, let me chance my arm and suggest this number:

It might be 45 years old, but it is still a crowd- pleaser, even for for a younger audience, and is likely to be fresh in people's minds this summer as I have it on good authority that it will feature in the television coverage of the World Cup in Brazil. It has to rank as one of the funkiest records ever, it's got a great bassline , and not a lot of bands can do it because it relies on having a brass section.

Not recent, and not funky, but a decent catalogue to have a glance at, starting with 'If you leave me now...' - Chicago..?

Here, they're billed with Earth Wind and Fire for a 3-hour stint. Surely something suitable in there..?

Yes, we did Vehicle as well! A great number. The Third Degree cover is really excellent. Worth posting, in fact:

Just checked back in and I'm overwhelmed by the responses.
Post #1, Song #4 (from discreet - thank you) and we're off and running.
I very much doubt whether I would have found Stone Cold Sober by Paloma Faith on my own.

I'm going through them one by one to make a short list. Thanks again everyone.

There's probably a fair few of The The's songs you could try, like this, though it isn't hugely well known material

...unless you were around in the late 80s/ early 90s when this album was HUGE!!!

Good selection Howie

Er, no! I think hell might freeze over first.

Besides which, all Elco members, bar possibly one I believe, have their fingers collectively entrenched in various other pies now....

Streetlife - me
Total 80's - me, keys & sax
Skamite - trumpet, keys & ex-trumpet
The Real Swing - drums, three vox & ex-keys
Soulsation - drums, two vox & ex-keys

Never say never though :D
