I've just posted this on Facebook but of course I really should be sharing it here first! I've been busy working on my Ibanez Gerald Veasley signature bass - it's a bit more Dan Veall now :)

To save repeating myself, here's my Facebook post - apologies as I've left all the tags in:

http://www.facebook.com/DoodOnBass1/posts/10152137990743123?notif_t=like

I'd say my custom job I am doing is about 90% completed now! A final tidy up of cabling, secure nuts and bolts, but I am really pleased to say all the electronics, of course, worked first time. I guess the model number of the bass should change from Ibanez Guitars GVB to DVB!!
So - I've stripped out the Bartolini Pickups and replaced them with threeEMG Pickups DC models as you can see. I've used EMGs for years, nothing else really. Thanks to Mark Ball at Musical Instrument Rehab, the front of the body has been routed and an insert to match the fretboard has been added. I wanted to shift the back pickup away from the bridge a bit for more body to the tone when solo'd. The existing preamp is out and eventually I will design a dedicated pre to go on board but there's plenty of oomph from the pickups at the moment!
Next up, a custom switching harness ala Brian May - the three switches simply turn each pickup on and off. However, unlike Sir May's guitar, I've used DPDT switches that give me an 'all on' config when the switches are all in the off position - so I'll never go silent of something knocks a switch. Clever eh?
There's a master tone control and master volume next to the inset jack socket cut out.
Power at the moment is 9V but will go up to 18V in time.
Of course, this lil beast is strung up with D'Addario Strings and Planet Waves strings and my choice is the brand new FLEXSTEELS which are awesome!!!
I will do a video in time, but I've alot on right now so bear with me!
What do you think?
- Oh, by the way! This bass is a rather epic Ibanez Basses Gerald VeasleyGVB model. It's really cool and in someways I feel a bit bad for doing naughty things to Gerald's design! He's a great guy! - Anyway, Gerald, if you are reading, I hope you like what I've done for my needs! It was a super bass to begin with, but ya know this was fun!
The Gerald Veasley GVB bass is great for soloing, chordal work and fast playing due to it's incredible 14mm string spacing. Funnily it is something I'd toyed with for a very long while as my own basses are 16mm. I often wondered should I go more narrow. Gerald beat me to it - and interestinglyJohn Myung followed suit with his musicman basses a few years ago.
Anyway, let me know what you think!

Dood, that looks awesome! Great work!
I did wonder what you were up to...
I'll bet that sounds beastly.
What are you planning for the preamp?

Thank you! - Well, there's plenty of top end available from these pups so I am using a passive pot for rolling off the highs. I'm going to test an idea on this one by using a single bass to mids sweepable semi parametric EQ. A bit like the VMC by EMG and err, that little green pedal I forget the name of right now which does the same, but with a wider sweep in to the lows.

Not porn but definitely DIY!

My own bass preamp. It never left the prototype phase, mainly because it worked. More info HERE
that looks interesting... interesting enough that I clicked on your blog.... and then went to the most recent post....
now you seem to be making something in a rack case... and after going back through 3-4 pages of blog posts you haven't said what it is! Thought it would be easier to ask rather than keep going back through the blog.... What is it?

EDIT: curiosity got the better of me, a compressor!

Yes its a GSSL compressor, SSL Mix bus clone. It went into operation before I managed to do the final blog post. It's been on my list of things to borrow it back and finish the blog for about 18 months! Poor show I know! Thanks for reading!

Wow, there's some real talent on here. I'd love to hear some of the diy basses (seems really wrong calling the basses diy cos they all look really pro)through a diy preamp into a diy amp through a diy cab etc etc.
i found a thread on another forum the other day where they had reverse engineered a thunderfunk amp, I could make one, a green boy or BFM cab... a load of effects pedals... and leave the bass building to blablas as I couldn't get anywhere near his skill!

 • 1 year later...

A few recent DIY builds:

Music Man Stingray 2-band preamp with many component mods and my own layout:

DIY 500 watt bass amp:

Tube bass preamp:

1/2 rack width bass preamp and matching 700 watt power amp module:

These are all hobby builds, nothing to sell here. Maybe someday though.

 • 4 weeks later...

And the beginnings for a few different onboard preamps:

3-band board, based on the half-rack preamp in the last few pictures above:

3-band, kind of a hybrid of Music Man and Bartolini NTMB circuits, done both through-hole then with many surface mount part subs:

Should be building up the first one in about a week's time or so.

Edit: and here it is:
