where to play in Glasgow...or there abouts?

Our band, Sula Sula, have written and are recording 12 original songs and one cover. We are all 40ish, old friends from school, and are having a blast.

We are looking to play a gig, first half of August, and think Glasgow would probably be a good bet. Probably to play 6ish songs on a bill with others. We play alt/classic rock stylee.

Any suggestions on where we might play. We have some ideas but I dunno if we are missing something. I guesse we will have to organise it pretty soon too.

Cheers,

Garry

HI Garry,

our band DarkSky www.facebook.com/darkskyband has been doing something similar - we are mainly 40s, similar genre etc. We have found it quite difficult to get gigs as an originals band, and it seems for us, bands aren't being booked that far in advance. There are a number of good groups on Facebook (Scotland is Alive With Music is one) where promoters post nights that are available. So far we have played Harleys in Ayr (booked through A Hard Days Night at Harleys FB group), Record Factory Glasgow (booked through PMCJ events http://www.pmcjevents.co.uk/request-a-gig ), Box Glasgow in Sauchiehall Street through Craig at glasgowmusic.co.uk) and by luck, last night's gig as support at Audio Glasgow.

Most originals sets on a multi-band bill are 30 minutes. I would say beware of 'pay-to-play' gigs where you have to sell tickets - we don't do this, but some promoters who book places like Pivo Pivo require you to do this.

Other options are Advosound (on FB) although they are east coast, and Whistlebinkies in Edinburgh, who have a new band night on Tuesdays to play a 30 minute set, and if the staff like you and think you are good enough, they will book you in the future. Some of the other venues (Opium, Dreadnought) have contact details on their sites for submissions. Mostly they are looking for links to mp3s i.e. soundcloud or similar.

Hope this helps,

cheers

Ralph

Thanks Ralph. Helps a lot. I will get on the fb page you mentioned and share this with the band. I have been playing, self taught, for years but never actually hugged, aside from a couple of cameos, so am mighty looking forward to it when it happens. We have 12 songs half recorded and rehearsals always seem to go well, so it's all good. 3 of the other members are seasoned giggers.

Yip, I'm in the same boat with my band, Bone Island. One possible option we are looking at is getting a few bands to club together and put on your own night. The 13th Note work this way, they rent out the place all night and the bands sell their own tickets and keep the revenue.

Sounds good Lou,

It would be good to do something like that, rather than the promoters getting paid for us selling the tickets. Keep in touch on here or FB!

13th Note is a good bet if you can get bands together, hire is cheap/free if you make a certain amount on the bar downstairs in the venue(can't remember the exact cost/amount) so as long as you have a few fans along who like a drink or six then ticket sales are all profit.
