Sorry, but it's not "shopping malls that steal trade from local town centres forcing small businesses out of business" it's the people who stop using local town centres in favour of the shopping malls. So the real question is why do people prefer to shop elsewhere when given a choice?
I would disagree, if you put a supermarket beside a town centre it will suck the life blood from it, the smaller shops cannot compete price wise because of the bulk buying power of the giant which comes with free car parking which also puts them at an advantage. Not to mention the myriad of different products on sale designed to kill all businesses locally stone dead, they also have the gall to open local branches at higher prices once they have killed the competition off.

I love the orchestral album she made a few years ago -

Great orchestration by Vince Mendoza.

I really like Travelogue too - it's wonderful how her voice has changed over the years. I don't think any of the versions necessarily outshine the originals (although Sire of Sorrow is pretty extraordinary), but it's a beautiful, aching listen. Very hard to choose a favourite album, let alone song, but I think everything from Ladies of the Canyon through to Hejira is pretty much flawless. I never tire of listening to Joni.

Not much to add except you can stick me in the Joni huggers camp too. A fine body of work over a long period and some of my favourite Jaco performances too, on the whole I think I like his stuff on the JM albums more than Weather report or solo. I must have most of her albums by now in some format or another.

So you'd prefer to pay more for your goods as well as your parking and carry your accumulating shopping as you walk from shop to shop?

People are not forced to use supermarkets are they? So why do they?
Convenience and price as we have discussed, all I'm saying is they don't need to be in the vicinity of each other, that way the small biz has a chance and people who are so inclined can stroll round the shops in town.

Another Joni fan here, I think Hejira and chalk mark in a rainstorm (which is also a great album title) are my two favorites, fabulous bass playing, beautiful lyrics, everything that is great about Joni. I know others will disagree but I personally was not such a fan of her"jazz" period with Methany and Alias etc. Larry Klein gets overlooked in favour of Jaco but his output was just as special on her albums.

Anyways ... Back OT. :)

I do agree KevB all my favourite Jaco stuff is with Joni

There was a thread on here a while back about JM re her interview describing Jaco and her comments about him were very sympathetic and she certainly did appreciate just how much he suffered from the tortured artist syndrome amongst other MH issues and gave him space to do his thing

Interesting to note that on live performances Pino chose to replicate the Jaco lines. Ery closely (the japan performance of Hejira springs to mind with Wayne shorter in the pinewood trees !) and personally i agree it's a perfect bass line and is integral to the song

Another Joni fan here!

I really love all her 70s stuff....less so 80's onwards, but I do appreciate she had to go somewhere else musically.

2 of my faves - 'Don Juan's....' and 'Mingus'. Never seem to rate too highly, but I think they're amazing records.

I was listening to them before I even knew who Jaco was, so once I started getting into that side, it opened up a whole new aspect of her records of that period. From 'Ladies' onward, for a good while she literally didn't put a musical foot wrong.

Chalk Mark is probably my favourite Joni album too - fabulous songs - Lakota, the Tea Leaf Prophesy, Beat of Black Wings etc etc.
I honestly don't think she put a foot wrong musically till the Taming the Tiger album. A strong return to form with Travelogue and I confess I don't know much about the last album.

She's a bit of a nifty painter as well!

Blue is amazing, great songs, and her voice is something else.

Surely one the best albums of all time. One of those rare L.Ps where every track is superb . If ever there was a record overdue to be featured on that Classic Albums documentary series then it must be Blue by Joni Mitchell.

Musings regarding Joni Mitchell ....

At the beginning of this live recording she explains that after reading " Beethoven : His Spiritual Development " by J.W.N.Sullivan she was inspired to write this song from the angle of being Ludwig's personal muse and encouraging him to not give up .
( Ironically the volume fluctuates in this recording  )

My favourite Joni line is ;

He sees the cars as sets of waves
Sequences of mass and space

from A Strange Boy off the Hejira album
Spooky! Me too! I love that album but it's so melancholic. 'Refuge of the Roads' shows off Jaco at his lyrical best with multi-tracked basses.

Agree with all the praise from this thread. There's a really good Sky documentary on her tracking her early 60's coffee shop roots to her finding her daughter and grand-child. Very moving.
I remember seeing an interview with Thomas Dolby where it was mentioned that Joni M disliked the production on that album and had said that it felt like being "interior-decorated out of her own home". Dolby's reaction to that was "Well it was about time she moved house anyway..."
