just caught the end - looked like a big stack, 8x10 or something..?

However, Paloma Faith, as bonkers as an 8 legged wallaby, but good to see the double bass stuck out at the front of stage. I think Paloma has her very own genre!

Cheers,
Rich

Yup. I guess, despite amazing advances in amp tech and solid state voicing, it's still the go to combination - I'd like to have both the heft and the cash for a classic Ampeg valve stack :)

I'd like to have the spine or the roadie :P .
Christina Marie was robbed :( .

The KC and Paloma Faith double bass sound were both great but it makes you wonder whether the bands had some say in the mixes!!

However all were surpassed by the Stingray 5 sound on the Kylie/Jamie version of The Eurythmics' There Must be an Angel. One of the only times the bass parts were properly audible all night - why is it that so many sound mixes perceive everything but 80s and 90s music to have bass parts mixed somewhere down with the kick drum - ridiculous because that's not how music sounded back in the 60s and 70s or more recently for that matter. I can imagine people mixing the sound of say, Muze tracks like Hysteria with the bass far too low as if it's an orchestral setting!! Why oh why do they do it???

Coz they've all been to media college and don't use their bleedin' ears.

I get a little fed up when working with music college guys who have been told how the old stuff should sound like in this digital age.
I've found them to be more interested in watching their digital desk readouts rather than listening and winding up the bits that gives a live band "bollocks".
i.e. a bass that can be heard and felt.
Too much bookwork, youtube cods, complicated digital gear and not enough listening and getting into the groove......

IMHO of course. ;)

OK rant over, exits stage left dragging P bass behind me...............................

PS - First show I have seen and I couldn't pick a winner from the last three but I really did like the KS and Paloma Faith along with Sir Tom and Sally.

Anyone found a YouTube clip of this fabled moment of auditory nirvana?

BTW a friend's son is studying audio engineering and had the opportunity to listen to the original masters (imported into ProTools) from Marvin Gaye's I Heard It through The Grapevine. Apparently a student submitting that work would have failed, as the individual instruments were so 'badly' recorded.

I think at times the contestants have shown up the judges for singing ability...

Which continues the long and proud tradition of pop music talent shows, as pointed out by JK on X-Factor a while back

That's makes a mockery of the whole collage course then, it's like an engineer once told me technically a bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly

Actually that bumble bee thing came from a misunderstanding of how insects fly, but I sense we are drifting off topic here.

Your honest opinion is wrong Jazzneck and let me tell you why!

I know the guy that mixed the show and he is not a Media College type man at all. In fact he came up through the ranks specialising in music/bands for TV at a network and really knows his stuff from doing some serious amounts of shows and recording/mixing.

Those big live light entertainment shows are very, very busy and long days getting it all rehearsed and ready to go to air and to that end quite often visiting/special guest acts are put on with 'vocal to track' to help keep to time restraints. That way the backing track can be nicely mixed & mastered elsewhere in advance. I don't know if that is the case with the recent Voice UK shows but this is my experience in the industry.

All that and there are also requirements/restraints on the mix/sound laid down by the producers and networks that will need to be adhered to as a condition of the job. A real minefield and headache to make happen!

I think for TV shows like this, the band really is intended to be mixed as a backing track, allowing the singers to be the point people focus on. Which is why when a band such as KCs perform, with their own sound, things such as a beefy bass sound are a surprise/difference.

That really is a magic sound on that bass, don't think much of the song though!

I think at ALL times the contestants have shown up the judges for singing ability....Tom Jones aside.

Don't forget however that the show is about "the voice"...and 3 of the judges have built a career around not actually being "the voice" (especially William & Kylie).

Being involved into this TV thing myself (I'm doing Lithuania Voice shows), I was always amazed about UK Voice's house-band bass player.. Now I know that bass chair is temporary there - different guys play at different stages of the show, but, knowing the high music standards of the show, it is beyond me, how bass player is allowed to play everything on electric bass and not using synth bass at all.
On the other hand, I'm not a dedicated follower of the UK show, but I've seen quite a few performances, and have never even spotted synth bass keys nearby the bassplayer..
In the end,I always thought, it is a must to be able to play (and actually do it :) ) some synth bass in UK pop scene, isn't it?
