good necks, good ceramic pups, commonly have a body made of some kind of mdf type stuff - good basses.

Mine was definitely wood. Is that mdf thing a Basschat urban myth, or have people here actually seen an example?
well it's not not just on basschat, and on the guitars as well as the basses apparently.... and having stripped the body of one - yes. HOWEVER, not all of them seem too... and I don't think it matters one bit - they sound great.

I believe the silver series bodies are made of basswood, see the brochure in this link:
http://brochures.yok...r/en_index.html

There's a thread about it here:
http://basschat.co.u...ough-the-years/

My Jazz bass is very light at 8.5 pounds and I think MDF would be heavier.
Mine is the sunburst SJB shown here:

I have an 'MDF' 94 MIJ Squier Precision. It's not that flaky, sawdust, type material that you get flatpack furniture and worktops made out of. It's very fine and smooth - more like a moulded plastic than wood. It must also be a lot heavier than wood, as there are quite large areas routed out under the pickguard to lighten it.

I know many people will look down their noses at it, but it sounds fantastic, and I won't be getting rid of mine for some time

I have a Silver Series Precision... mighty fine bass, although my son won't let me on it.

I reckon the machines are fine, Schallers I think, so standard fender types will not fit.

A J-Retro is a worthwhile addition to any jazz bass IMO, I have one on my fretless 62 and it's awesome.
