Oscar South Posted June 28, 2008 Share Posted June 28, 2008 Came across some old jamming recordings I made with a friend and my brother a long while back and then put onto soundclick a little less long back just now, was quite interesting listening to them. I think we'd played for a few years before this but not really recorded anything or jammed together much yet. Apart from questionable ability at the instruments (spot the fill where I'm just guessing notes and hoping they work ) and terrible recording quality I think they don't sound too terrible. We got involved with the DIY cassette scene in 1979 and as a result built up quite a reputation in those circles. Its got three tracks on it. The bass player from that band is dead now as is the studio engineer that recorded it. Chris2112 Posted July 1, 2008 Share Posted July 1, 2008 The earliest record is me playing is probably a cassette I made of me, my brother and a friend of mine playing together. Me on my old Ibanez BTB405QM, my brother on his Epiphone Les Paul (he now swears he'll never touch another Les Paul because they're so poor) and a friend playing an awesome Takamine acoustic. It was all really naff instrumental stuff, for the most part. Songs by the Shadows, Gary Moore, Hotel California, Knights in White Satin and whatnot. But we also did a few cool tunes. Bad Moon Rising, a few Beatles numbers, Ein Kleine Nacht Musik, In the Hall Of The Mountain King. Despite the crapiness of some of the source material, I was really impressed when I listened to the tape last year. Very tight musically because we practiced it so much, and despite the fact we recorded it on a 4 track with a built in mic, the tones on the tape were awesome. There was also some free jamming on there, and the tape was rolling while we warmed up, so you can hear us all doing different things, playing different licks from what we were into at the time. A really good listen, I sadly lost the tape, and the one live performance we did (at a Shadows club, no less!) wasn't recorded. Shame, because I took my Kubicki to it! Unfortunately, before I could get a copy my phone got stolen with his number. Not having any other way to contact him, they're probably lying in a box somewhere or worse. I was using a Tokai P bass and a small ashdown Combo. Awful playing (ALL of us but especially me), awful acoustics and awful recording but it gives my kids hysterics! johnnylager Posted July 2, 2008 Share Posted July 2, 2008 (edited) Some appalling tape of a jam band we got together to record (in me folks house - they were in) an 'Evil Dead' inspired tune, 'Raped By a Tree', with the thought provoking lyrics of 'Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta get away 'Gonna, gonna, gonna, gonna get raped by a tree' I remember this was my first foray into the wonderful world of effects, with whatever the guitarist (who was in fact a bass player) brought with him all plugged in and turned up full. I only remember fuzz & wah and playing whatever parts of Metallica's 'Anaethesia - Pulling Teeth' I could. Loudly. And not feeling embarrassed in front of me folks. Must find it...
