House Music (and great bass lines)

I'm talking about House Music with killer bass hooks, played on the bass guitar.

Whether sampled and sequenced, or played through, there's a vast body of house tunes with sexy bass lines. Proper hip-orientated grooves that possess your body and leave you with no option but to get locked in and down on it. It's the kinda groove that takes control and says "Resistance is futile! You're gettin' steamy with the ladies, right now!" ... It's a good place to be :)

This genre will have its haters, but hey, stuff the haters! They were obsessing on Dungeons and Dragons and disecting prog-rock whilst we were getting lost and low on the dancefloor with hot sweaty sexy girls. Anyway, I digress (again). I was saying, a lot of fine players have graced those records, etc ;)

Here's a classic to get the ball rolling. Masters at Work, featuring the gorgeous soulful voice of India. To be in love ...

Absolutely agree. One of the great things of being a bassist is discovering great bass in all types of music.

I use it as good practice for grooving. As much of this music is 'atonal' you can basically play any notes and concentrate on locking into the rythmn and grooving.

I'd love a few more links guys to other stuff I've probably not stumbled across yet.

A lot of original house innovators quite liked prog rock and kraut rock as well ;)

Many were former punks, applying the same ethos to synthesisers and drum machines. For example my all time favourite house track, Jesus Loves The Acid, was by a former punk musician. Some of the proggie folk seem to have been quite influential in what became the trance music scene though, which if you think about it makes a lot more sense!

Same here, I listen to a huge variety of music these days and it all started with exploring tracks with great bass lines.

Love the tone of the bass on the OP's posted example.

When I started clubbing it was at an underground rave here in london called Coalesce, a hard/funky house gathering. Most of the music was instrumental but featured loads of real bass. Awesome! What in introduction to dance music & quality DJ's. Especially under the influence of some top quality mind bending substances.

I played a couple of house tunes on Friday for a gig with a soul choir and the bass lines were both pretty good. Not as hooky as that one but grooving nonetheless.

Nice! What band was that and where?
