Just found this forum & thought I'd add a list of some of the basses I've owned. I've been playing for 35 years now on & off. I started as a guitarist but wasn't very good at playing chords. Life changed when I walked into the local music shop & spotted a big black bass on the wall!! It turned out to be a Columbus Grabber copy (& was pretty awful I discovered afterwards but as I'd never even touched a bass I didn't know any different). It was fitted with black strings which totally sold it to me. And so began my dalliance with the dark side.......

Following this in as near chronological order as I can remember:

1972 Gibson EB3
1975 No Name Jap Jazz copy*
Hohner Steinberger headless copy
1987 Aria SB1000
Early 90's Encore Precision copy* (Solid Ash body + EMG's)
80's Jap Squier Precision
Jap Fender Jazz 1975 re-issue
Vester 5 string
Early 90's Dean 5 string*
Late 90's Epiphone EB0
1989 Signature Jazz Bass Export model (home built using NOS Signature body & neck from the States)
Early 70's Jap Kasuga EB3 copy
2007 Adam Black Titan prototype
2007 Swift Fretless Electro Acoustic*
2008 Acepro Electro Acoustic
2009 Dean EVO XM short scale*
2007 Wesley (not sure which model but has Prec/Jazz configuration)*

*= still owned

Think there are probably others I've forgotten!! - I'm barred from entering music shops unless accompanied by my better half (doesn't stop me though - I just buy off Ebay haha)

1978-1984

Avon SG/EB0 bass - yuk
Shaftesbury Rickenfaker semi - dull thud

retired

2003 on

70s Ibanez Silver Series P/J - Nice but very, very heavy

Jazz necked Precision mongrel - assembled myself from bits*
Starfire 80s bass - Really horrible. May be destroyed in a video or something*
Ibanez AGB200 - On a whim. Fun but not my style
Shergold Marathon basket case - Just about saveable. Going to be a long term project*
2007 S-1 Precision with a wizard thumper and no S-1 now - I'd say better than my old 68. Love it.*

Vintage Stingray copy*
I had a terrible habit of breaking the bottom tuning peg off this one

Epiphone Thunderbird*
Had terrible neck dive, I think that is its best feature.

Fender P-bass 1978
Bought for £450 then swapped for the T-40, who's previous owner then sold for £900, It was black with a rosewood neck and had been on a few world tours with The 60ft Dolls, so it was a bit battered, It used to glow a really cool colour under UV light too. I really miss this bass. It was my first decent bass and my first Fender.

Peavey T-40 1979*
There's a thread in gear porn if you wanna know more about them. I adore this bass, Natural/black/maple in colour.

Warwick Streamer Stage 1 V
Unquestionably the worst £1,800 ive ever spent, I was in a metal band at the time and bands like Limp Bizkit and Mudvayne were using warwicks so I thought Yes, clearly this is a clever way of spending some money, a boutique bass that should serve me well for the rest of time. Oh how wrong i was, Damn nearly put me off active circuitry for life. But it was, as I discovered a while after the metal band split up, lovely for funk.

CIJ 1966 Fender Jazz (reissue)*
Candy Apple Red with matching headstock and dots 'n' bound neck, I fell in love with this bass on sight and I plays like I dream I had to have it. It turned out to have really low output pickups and the worst bridge in history but this was soon rectified with a pair of Shed "Hot n Dangerous" pickups and a Badass II. It is now pretty much my number one bass even though I prefer playing P-basses. It does get slightly heavy after a few hours though.

1970 something Gibson Grabber (slidey Pup model)*
Our git-arist pretty much talked me into buying this becaust Thrice have toured and recorded with one for the last few albums and they really do have a stunning bass tone. Sadly he was right and it does sound awesome, but the slightest atmospheric pressure change and it is all over the place. In the year I've owned it its been set up/adjusted at some expense 3 times. I really wish it didnt have these problems. It has some neck dive issues too, but the tone makes this forgiveable, also its no where near as bad as the T-bird for it.

Modern MIA Fender P-bass*
I straight swapped this for my warwick. It has an MIM rosewood neck and a USA body, Full hipshot hardware a hell of a paint job and no onboard controls, If i could only get on with the Delano pickup it is brandishing I would love this bass, I'm gonna put an SPB-3 or maybe a Di Marzio Model P in it and see what happens. If i still dont like it I might replace it with a stingray.

Aria Pro II SB Elite II*
My most recent aquisition, a very stable beautifully made and balanced bass with really good versatility and almost absolute player comfort. It does lack soul though, typically japanese. May also be re homed to fund the stingray if the P-bass goes

Trace Elliot T-bass (pending delivery)*
I will let you know when I comes, suffice to say I am pretty excited about this one :)

Mists of time........

Jedson Tele Bass - short scale, actually had a Telecaster shaped body.
Japanese (can't remember name) Jazz Bass copy - not good.
'68 Fender Telecaster Bass Blonde/Maple - first proper bass, this was great should have hung on to it, big humbucker, big sound.
'62 Epiphone Rivoli Tobacco SB/Rosewood - another beauty I should have kept, someone added a Di Marzio P Bass pup. Didn't do much for the looks but gave it loads more punch.
'75 Fender Precision Natural/Maple - looked great, didn't sound that good to be honest.

Big break for 5 years and these I still own:

Yamaha BB614 Yellow/Rosewood - surprisingly good for the money.
Fender MIM Jazz Bass 3 TSB/Rosewood + Badass II and Seymour Duncans - basic bass was average but with a bit of work and tort pickguard.....
Westone Thunder 1A Natural/Rosewood - love this thing, pure 80s!
Dean Playmate Acoustic Black/Rosewood - El Mariachi, enormous, full 34" scale, very playable for the price and doesn't upset the neighbours!

I've posted photos in the porn section, but here's a listing of current basses in order of acquisition (all since 2004) - I haven't sold any yet though need to reduce the collection.

Fender Precision USA Vintage '62 reissue, - Olympic white. Looks great but don't like the thin 'C' necks.
Gibson Triumph Recording bass, 1977. - Short scale so takes a bit of getting used to. Like the tone though and it's a lovely piece of wood.
Fender Precision USA Vintage '57 reissue - Black with maple neck, very JJ burnel, but neck observation above applies here too. FOR SALE £850
Fender Jazz Bass USA 1973 - sunburst, beautiful, just started playing this on a regular basis and loving every minute.
Rickenbacker 4001, 1983 - Fireglow, and is a favourite with the band but not overkeen on the tone compared with a Fender.
Musicman Stingray - Candy red, it's OK. For SALE £900
Gibson Les Paul Std - Cherry Sunburst - love the Gibson tone and playability but it's so heavy. FOR SALE £1250.
Fender Precision USA 1978 - sunburst, love the neck as it's just a bit fatter and fits the hand beautifully.
Aria Acoustic
Fender Jazz Bass USA Vintage 1975 Reissue - natural with maple neck, black position marking. Very beautiful, FOR SALE £1250
Fender Precision USA 1977 - black, with maple neck. Looks and sounds great and my most regularly used.
Cort Curbow Fretless. It's OK but rarely use it. FOR SALE £150
Wilson Semi-Acoustic Bass 1968 - quite a rare beast and refitted with steel strings and the tone is brilliant. Very light.
Musicman Bongo 5 String, special edition - Black with gold fittings. But why 5 strings (or more)? I don;t think the B-string adds much tonally but then I am old-fashioned.
G&L ASAT - black with maple neck, looks good, sounds better, but someone else's comments about nose dive are true.
Gibson G3 1970s - natural. Gibsons always sound great.

Probably should sell more too.

Phil

1) Rockwood by Hohner P bass copy in B&W (£99.99) - played better than my friends squier equivalent. I covered it in stickers and eventually swapped it for a Westfield Strat copy - mistake - the guy who I swapped it with subsequently destroyed it with a bad mod job.

2) Spector Legend 4 in amberburst - found in a dusty corner of ca$h converters - the guy must have been sniffing glue that day because I managed to get it for £100! - I loved it, but evetually had to sell due to financial constarints.

3) Danelectro 63 long scale in Black and white (£160) - dream bass - I love Danelectro stuff due to their truly unique retro stylings. I adore this bass and this was a bargain in my eyes, I still own this and will never part with it.

4) Fender Squier P bass (£85) bought this from a local chap as a back up / future project. Its a 1996 model so its a little weathered. I think this bass has potential. I especially like the fact its 13 years old. It has great character too.

Can't compete with some of the posts I've seen here, but thought I'd rack the grey matter and recall what's passed through my hands over the years:

HONDO II Precision copy, black (purchased new in 1977. Spot the Jean Jacques Burnel influence.)
WESTONE Thunder 1A, sunburst (sold because the body was too small - I'm six feet four tall)
IBANEZ Roadstar 924, cherry sunburst (named "Lisa"; had it defretted, refretted and eventually sold it)
YAMAHA BB1100s, natural (did my first gig on this one)
IBANEZ Studio, natural (still not sure what possessed me)
IBANEZ Roadster 924, red (very heavy; put Reflex active pickups on but eventually PXed for summat else)
IBANEZ Roadster 924, red (a different one, bought off a mate; lent it to my brother who promptly moved to the US with it)
JAYDEE Roadie 1 fretless (black, passive and stylish, like myself)
IBANEZ Roadstar 860, pearl white (low impedance humbucking pickups; didn't compare to "Lisa" so sold it within a month of buying it)
WAL Custom, natural (lovely bass, but somehow drifted away from fretless playing and sold it)
PANGBORN Warrior (little-known "Mark King" model, apparently - eventually PX'ed for Jaydee)
JAYDEE Mark King, yellow (eventually PXed for StingRay)
MUSIC MAN StingRay, light blue (still have it - much gigged, much loved)
MAISON fretless 5-string, grey (absolute pile of steaming dump; still in my garage awaiting my next trip to the tip)
SPECTOR PJ active, black (bought from, and subsequently sold back to, Gary aka "Cetera")
YAMAHA RBX765A 5-string, green (great budget bass - nice spacing for my big hands. Only sold it mid-December)
WASHBURN Series 1000 Status, black (pre-wedding gift to myself! Gigged only once; sold it mid-December)
MUSIC MAN SUB, black (bought from Gary "Cetera"; recently advertised for sale until advised of their apparently low resale value. Now a keeper)
SQUIER Vintage Modified fretless Jazz Bass sunburst (impulse buy, recently sold to Colin as surplus to requirements)
SQUIER Standard Jazz Bass, walnut (previous owner had installed EMGs but I had them off a bit sharpish! Sold in mid-December - believe it's now back up for sale.)
FENDER Mexican Jazz Bass, black (new main bass - now sports the EMGs from last purchase, Badass bridge now installed. This is why I want to get back out there as a bassist).

I think that's all of 'em. What memories...

Funny thing is, I've had only three live rigs; a Carlsbro Cobra 90 combo, Laney DP150 head and 4x10 cab and the Peavey MegaBass head/MegaBox cab I bought in 1992 (which had apparently been previously owned by Skunk Anansie's Cass Lewis).
Lets see...
In the order I bought them:

Burns Sonic short scale bass (including Burns hard case)
Futurama Bass (the only one I've sold so far)
Washburn B105 5 string
Overwater Original 2 extra-long scale 5 string
Gus G3 5 string
Kramer XKB-10
Hondo Alien (Kramer Duke copy)
Wesley Acylic (de-fretted)
Washburn B-20 8 string (currently in pieces being renovated)
Squire Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass (upgraded with Badass II bridge, Bartolini J P-ups and J-Retro Pre-amp)
Roberts Fretless Prototype
British Custom Guitars V-shape bass (bought in an uncompleted state - still to be finished)
Traben Phoenix 5 string
Lightwave Sabre A (with fretless and fretted necks - current fitted with the fretless neck)
Carlo Robelli 8-string
Pedulla Buzz
Hi I too have a Squire Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass which I have fitted a bas ass bridge too, the problem is its still sounds a little dead to me, will fitting active pick upd really make a big differencw to the sound or maybe I just have a duff bass. The neck seems to be very easily marked already, could that be a problem? Which strings do you recomment using for this bass?

any advice to improve the souind greatfully recieved

cheers

I'm new here but really enjoyed reading this thread. Some fantastic basses listed in the previous posts...

Mine:

Encore P/J - First bass. Terrible

Yamaha RBX300 - Gigged for over 10 years (3 times per week) until neck split. Fantastic.

Yamaha 5 string - can't remember model. Good. Stolen by ex-girlfriend.

Status Empathy 6 string - Great but too many strings...

Ibanez P/J SR series - Surprisingly good but not my cup of tea

Status S1 Classic - Brand new custom order. Very poor - had to send it immediately back due to terrible buzzing on 12th fret. Disappointing sound. Totally overrated and very expensive. Anyone else had one of these?

Musicman Stingray 5. Amazingly bought for £320 (immaculate 2nd hand) when US exchange rate was $2 to £1. Fantastic neck but never got on with the sound.

"Bitza" bass. Jazz body, Moses graphite neck, Barts. Done as a project but result not as good as hoped.

Cheers,
Bryan

A paltry list compared to some. Had one bass for years and years until very recently.

 Avon EB0 copy - owned for ~6 months - 1st bass, terrible in every way, the only bass I destroyed

:) Hondo P copy in natural with maple neck ~ 1 year, bought new for £70 in late 70s. Looked great, played well but was so heavy

 1973 Fender Precision, all black, maple neck ~ 2 years, second hand with 18 monthly payments. Neck wasn't flat, cost me around £50 to dress the actual wood, refinish and replace frets. Thereafter wonderful, why didn't I keep it? Traded it in for

:lol: Aria SB600 ~3 years, bought for its amazing looks and also played brilliantly, sounded fine, couldn't afford the 1000. Sold to a friend to buy;

 Jaydee Roadie 1A* ~26 years, my bass for most of my playing life. Bought brand new for £500, still got it, still my no.1. SO easy to play and very much mine.

 Fender Frankestein P* ~1 1/2 years, very worn 1978 maple neck, black body from who knows where, old Squire hardware, Fender black scratch. To be knocked about, plays very nicely with bright P sound.

 1977 Fender Precision*, black maple neck (theme going on here) <1 year; one previous owner, played in a big band. Flats, virtually as new, ash trays, shop tags, owners manual. Beeyootiful it is, like a museum piece, cannot get more original but scared to take it out of the house.

 J&D Precision Funk Machine copy* ~ 2 months. Bought from ebay as a present but I kept it! It plays and sounds fabulously! Cost almost nothing and in perfect condition.

* - still have

I love showing these topics to my wife to prove how restrained i am. There are a lot of basses out there but hey can i be the only person on this thread to have a Hamer Cruise Bass? I haven't seen any mention of them!

Here is my puny list:

Columbus Precision copy - 1980 - 1985 - absolute bag of rubbish but didn't know any better
Yamaha BB1100s 1985-2009 - seemed fantastic after the Columbus. Actually this is a fine bass - very versatile
Hamer Cruise Bass (with 2 tek) 2007 - present day - terrific Jazz bass clone. Installed some Fender Custom Shops PuPs. I LOVE this bass.
Fender MIM 5 String Jazz 2008 - present day - its ok. Not as well built as the Hamer but reliable.
Lakland 55-01 2008 - present day - great sounding bass (if you like active PuPs). Nice balance and feel. Versatile.

1976 Gibson EB-4L
2000 Stingray 4H
2005 Zon Sonus Special 5 fretless
2006 Stingray 5HH
2009 Bongo 4H

I've never sold a bass I've bought - although my purchasing rate has increased rapidly since I turned 40 so I may come under pressure from SWMBO soon...

Yamaha RBX270 (1999)
First bass, traded it for my Yamaha BB N5II
Yamaha RBX270F (2000)
Sold, great bass :)
Yamaha BB N5II* (2001)
My first 5-string ever. I traded it for the Frankenbass but regretted it so much I bought it back. It's tuned E-C now and I love it so much...
ESP/Knooren frankenbass (unknown)
Traded it for the TRB5II
Blade B2 Tetra Jazz* (2001)
Bought this really really cheap. It's a very nice bass but I upgraded it anyway, with an Aguilar OBP-1 and Nordstrand NJ4s. It got signed by Marcus Miller  I'll never ever sell this.
Fender Jazz Bass Standard Fretless* (2004)
Best fretless I've ever played.
Yamaha TRB5II (2001)
Sold... it was an awesome bass.
Yamaha BB414 (2007)
Traded it for one of my Aguilar cabs. It was an excellent instrument and I want one again some day.
Johann Georg Kessler double bass (unknown)
Sold. I got tendonitis from playing upright so I had to sell it. I still have the urge to play...
Motion B-05 BK (unkown)
This was in a terrible state when I got it. I cleaned and repaired it, played it for a while then sold it. It got me GAS for a proper acoustic bass though.
Blade B1 (2003)
Sold. I will regret this for ever.
Cobelens & de Bruyne Primo merbau (2008)
Returned it to the luthiers, so they could use the electronics and hardware for my new bass. My endorsement ended (they stopped building entirely) before I got the new one.
Squier Vintage Modified Precision* (2008)
Changed the pickups to Fender Original, it got a new bridge and new pots, and it's now way better than a USA Fender.
Yamaha BB300 (1989)
Good bass, but I traded it for the TRB5F
Yamaha TRB5F (1995)
Awesome fretless, but I liked my Fender more so I sold it.
Squier Standard Jazz Bass (2007)
Sold. It was good but not good enough.
Celinder J Update 4* (1998)
I have dreamed of having a Celinder for about 5 years and now I was able to afford it and get it for a reasonable price. It's an old one (and the one in the Basschat banner) and one of the most comfortable basses to play I own. It's certainly the loudest.
Squier Classic Vibe Jazz Bass (2009)
This was absolutely fantastic and made me buy my '66 Jazz. I sold it anyway
Fender Jazz Bass* (1966)
Thanks to me and my brother winning a Dutch TV quiz I could buy this. It has been my dream to have a vintage Jazz for my entire bass life, and now I have this one  Everyone who plays it, including yours truly, is astonished by the playability, feel and sound of this creation from heaven.

* indicates I still have them.
