Pitch correction, software or hardware.....?

I don't like the idea of using it, but having heard the results of PT newly applied to a track that we recorded a while back, I would like to have a dabble on some other things I've recorded and got planned. Any recommendations for hardware or software that does the trick? Is hardware generically better than software (or vice versa) in this context?
Thanks
Chris

I use Vari Audio which is part of Cubase now. A simple double click on a section of recorded audio audio track will bring up a matrix edit showing you what notes you have recorded, you can move them into pitch and change the individual pitch, pitch accuracy and timing .

A feature I particularly like is the ability to export the audio data as midi data - great for midi triggering a bass line you have written and recorded.
