Can someone clarify for me (name and shame) who these 'oldies' are?

I'm old, I've also been on this forum since the start and I'm fairly active on BC, yet I've not come across these belligerent 'oldies' that several posters have alluded to... so who are they?
I guess I'm an oldie John and like you have been around from the start. I'm certainly not young enough to know everything so I guess I is fik 2 innit.

How much are the fees? Are we talking the £20 for selling stuff, or are there more fees to pay for certain services in the forum? I mean, if we are talking twenty quid to sell a £300 item, should people really get upset? The fee is clearly stated if you want to sell.If you are unhappy about the fee, then ebay is an option. Some people contribute without selling.I am not sure how much it costs, but i am sure there are certain costs to run a website such as this. You get free membership for most things. If people are getting upset about £20 for selling, then i would be surprised personally. A lot of forums, you have to pay too get anything out of it.
I'm not talking about whether or not the fees are correct. All I'm saying is that people's attitudes towards a "paid service" are different than they are towards a totally free site. Even if only subconciously.

Politics, discreet has mentioned right wingers kicking off. Left wingers obviously didn't.
Apologies for the digression, but just for the record I'd like to say that just because I am repulsed by what the Conservative party are up to in the name of 'democracy', doesn't mean I'm a big fan of any other political party. I am neither left or right wing. The Parliamentary system doesn't work - it never has - and I know what bullshit smells like. That is all.

Another vote of confidence and thanks from me. Basschat forums have given my bass playing another dimension, a depth of understanding and a thirst for more knowledge that I would say improves my quality of life, gives me more interest, pride and professionalism in what I do. As far as off topic is concerned, I live in a rarified bubble and, for me, it is the source of all knowledge and the lens through which I view the world. £20?! bargain.

There always are and are always going to be people who make a lot of noise and fuss and hate being limited by constraints, rules and other peoples' logical counterpoints. Let them huff and puff as much as they like - it speaks volumes more about them than about whatever yanked their chains in the first place.

Whatever the causes of people not wanting to pay the £20 for selling, i m staying here regardless.I like it here. There are some really friendly people who give advice, and some not so friendly, that still give advice, which you can take on board or ignore. The help and advice far outweighs any negatives. Some topics i have avoided as it can get controversial, most topics i have read, and learnt a lot from .

I paid my money and I made my choice. I like it here. I do dip a toe into off topic every now and then....sometimes its fun, sometimes less so. Kinda like life. Sadly, just because a person straps on a bass every now and then, it doesn't make them automatically, a warm and wonderful human being. Sometimes they open their mouths and let their guts rumble and we all have to put up with the smell. T'was ever thus.

I have no problem with the charges for selling things ( why would I ? I don't want to sell anything ) but I have been aware a lot of resentment , bad feeling and tension on here lately . It is all my fault , as I'm sure a lot of you will have noticed . That is because I have been sent here by Talkbass to destroy you .

£20 for a years worth of selling is pretty cheap compared to any other method that I'm aware off .

Off topic can be a bit of a mine field , it makes great reading , but I have learnt to be very careful about posting comments as there always seem to be some one lurking in the ether wanting to take a swipe at you . A thick skin is a definite advantage to those souls who brave the forum . I suppose , if you can't take the heat , stay out of the kitchen.

The help I have received from the gear forums is great , and the porn section makes great browsing , nice to see other people's stuff.
So all in all , great website , gets the thumbs up from me.

BC is great. I've met new friends, found out about gear, found out about where to get my amp serviced. I've got a (relatively) new job, so not been around here as much as I was, plus I've missed a few socials too which has been a bit of a bummer. I've not noticed all the aggro, plus the whole membership/seller fee thing has been in discussion for a while, so I don't know why people would get upset about it. But then again I have a history of missing the blindingly obvious. I totally missed the VoodooWazoo threads. Perhaps someone can PM me the links, so's I'm not so un-hip?

BC is the product of its members and the dynamic is set by them. If you meddle with it, then you meddle with the dynamic, a bit like muting a nice ringing sustain right on the bounce of your valves. Let things ride and you never know what will shine through.

I think the mods do a great job, but they can only do what they can do. I don't always agree, I thought Hamster locked the Scally/Police topic early, but really, meh. It is what it is, as they say.

My biggest gripe about BC is I post daft stuff that I think is dead funny, and not one person ever quotes the post and laughs. And for that reason alone I'm cancelling my as yet unpaid subscription because all you lot is a shower of b@stards.

Lots of love,

Fred Fenackerpan

Lol, i like that.I do that after drinking Strongbow, then read it the next day and realise why no one found it funny.
I see even on this topic, people want to talk about Thatcher, so maybe i can see where some people are coming from. The only Thatchers i am interested in is the cider

This is by far the most pleasant and "community" feeling forum I have ever used (bar one, but that only has 10 regulars at the moment). There is an odd phenomenon in Off Topic though, where any thread started about a vaguely controversial topic will very quickly by inundated with "well this isn't going to end well" type comments, essentially writing off the thread as a car crash before it's even got going. I would suggest that this is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy, if everyone chimes in with how inevitable a threads descent into petty bickering is then it's a lot more likely to actually descend into petty bickering.

And to be perfectly frank, that isn't helped by mixed signals from the mod team. I have seen many mods contribute jokes and other comments that contribute to or propagate the discussion in threads that are ultimately locked by a mod (sometimes the same mod), occasionally with a citation of the "try and avoid religion, politics, and anything sexist please" "rule". I appreciate that the mods are also users and want to participate in threads but it can sometimes appear that they are operating on a double standard, or that the judgement of a thread becoming unacceptable is made on a whim rather than by an established set of rules.

This is very true. Although it's their site and their call, a little consistency on this would be appreciated. As an example, there was that thread a couple of days ago, essentially mocking a trans woman. This is a form of sexism and not something I'm comfortable seeing on here (which I believe you pointed out on the thread, Bob), but I noticed a member of the mod team blithely joining in the "banter". I know mods/admins are only human and all that, but I think the role does come with an increased responsibility to think carefully before posting.

I think that BC is a great community.

Personally I LOVE OT, you can always find something to make you giggle, yet on the other hand I can think of several threads where the community has rallied for a member in need (myself included). Yes, you get some contentious threads, but you get those in other sections too.

I also think the £20 fee is fair, if you don't want to pay it, don't sell anything ;)

If I had to be hyper critical, I do find it intriguing sometimes when some threads are removed/locked, yet something that seems more of a concern is let to ride. However, it just proves that Mods and admin are humans too, with their own opinions on what is right or wrong.

I adore the place and am honoured to have met some wonderful real life and virtual friends that I wouldn't have if it hadn't been for BC!

I'm a relatively new contributor to the forum though have been a member for a couple of years. I've found it to be a source of very useful information and have received some really great and friendly advice on a query I published recently. I haven't advertised any gear for sale but probably will do at some time and £20 seems to be very reasonable compared with other ways to sell equipment. My personal view is to stick to bass related stuff and don't get involved in OT. There's plenty of other forums and websites to use if you want to get into those sort of debates. The Mods have a difficult job at times and from what I see do it well - let's face it, they are holding this forum together for the benefit of the community.
