Some pix of The Linear L30.

I tightened a banging panel on one of the cabs but thought I'd have a look inside at the same time. To my surprise I found the 12" Goodmans Audiom 51s to be 16 ohms rather than the expected 8. The amp was designed to work (slightly inconveniently) at either 3 or fifteen ohms so however the two cabs are configured, they're the wrong load. The amp has worked with these cabs at 4 ohms since the '60s but on doing a little research the general concensus is 'under' load the amp so I've put the 8 ohm load onto the 15 ohm tap. It doesn't seem to have made much difference to be fair..

Whilst it's been apart I've given it a thorough clean and visual inspection.

Guess what came in the post this morning, all the way from Newcastle? Have just this minute unpacked and photographed. Just as soon as the temperature equalises I'll fire it up and see what's what! It smells OLD - like a church. :)

Burman MPA preamp and SL100 Powerpak power amp. Hand made in 1972 by Greg Burman.
Four ECC83s in the pre and one ECC83 (I think) and four EL34s in the power, all 70s Mullards :gas: :

Inside the Powerpak. A quartet of lovely EL34s. Check out the size of those transformers:

The only non-standard fitting is the PowerCON mains connector, as the original Bulgin went tits-up, apparently. I suppose I could get an 'authentic' Bulgin socket and plug fitted, but I'm not that much of a geek about it ...yet. ;)

Ooh, looks nice, if somewhat massive for a 100 watter! Personally, I wouldn't want a Bulgin plug on any piece of kit I was gigging with, as the cables pull out easily and people stopped using them for a reason.

Cheers, that's good to know - I'll leave it well alone, then.
I suppose I should get some detailed gut shots done - Mr. Foxen will be expecting them. ;)

I've got one of these. It's not the classic amps I'm seeing so far on the thread but still all valve :)

Nice! Not sure I recognise it though, what model is it? I'm collecting a CTM100 tomorrow, can't wait :)

The EQ section is not valve - is that allowed in this elite thread ;-)

Lovely amp. I have the baby brother Twin Valve, and can only imagine how loud this beast goes.

It is indeed allowed as I'm sure I've put my TwinValve on here.. Oh we all know I have a rather soft spot for Trace too!

I'm getting itchy for a new amp at the min but have holiday to pay for so I'll have to wait till after June. I'm thinking along two lines..

1:) Something powerful and covenient so either a 300w / 400w / 500w 12 band Trace.

2:) Something mega pokey but awesome so a V6 or possibly Quattra / Hexa or even a VA..

Hmm, thinking out loud never looks good does it.. :gas:

I've taken both my valve amps in to John Chambers for a check over/MOT

I've let him have free reign on the Red Iron to see if he can squeeze any more volume/headroom out of it. The most likely thing being a replacement output transformer, and maybe some new KT88s / rebiasing

The Twin Valve he'll just give a once over to ensure all is as it should be.

When I was discussing the problem of getting ultra-clean loud lows from a 100w amp, he advised his old setup - a 4x12/1x18 cab and 400w valve amp. Quote: "it was a bugger to lift" :-D

Oh, and I saw the 1000W monster in the flesh. It's ludicrously amazing to behold!

You're making me drool now! I loved my old V4 head (MK2) (now Longtime Freds) and the 4808 combo too but I could never really be without a trace hence the TwinValve. I've done some recording this week and it sounds top-notch.

And put some pix on please, just to upset me some more. Ha!

Chassis shot of the big'un..

That Ashton stack on the first page is doing very strange things to me.

A valve amp is now top of the list for equipment I need - going to have to start searching for a bargain!
The Ashton is lovely, there's a review of it elsewhere on the forum. It's had a minor wobble this week with a failed cap but it's back on all 6 cylinders now..
