Yes! And a £5 fine for bloody window shoppers who write, 'if only I had the cash for this'... ...'If this had 4/5/6/7/8/12/21 strings I'd be all over it'... ...'why are all the things I want too far away?'... ...'I never thought I'd see you sell this, mate!'... ...'you can get these much cheaper at Argos'... ...'My arse hurts!... ...and so on and so forth. :)

Nah, leave 'em be, they represent free bumps!

I've read most of this thread & one question I don't think has been asked is, how much does it cost to run Basschat for a year?
I don't really think that is our concern. We are donating to help run the site and in turn we are getting unlimited listing in the classifieds section.

I don't know, and even if I did, I wouldn't tell you. :)

What I can tell you however is that the site running on donations alone since it's inception has meant that certain individuals have had to dip into their own pockets on a regular basis to maintain the site so that the rest of us could continue enjoying it.

I'm still waiting to see if someone tries to sell their house in the 'Sell Anything' forum.

£20 instead of estate agents fees has got to be a good move... :D

I only asked because, I agree that people shouldn't have to pay for it out their own pocket. However, if it's now being done for profit I don't really agree with that either.
I don't know if profit is involved, but if it is... fair enough. Why shouldn't there be?

+1 It's not like basschat is a democratic collective or communal entity, at least not in its hierarchical structure... it has owners and administrators, is overseen constantly and has expenses and overheads like any other business. I wouldn't mind much if there was a surplus that gets trousered and spent on high-grade porn... after all, it's not like we're being ripped off, is it? Like some other web-based operations I could mention. :)

If people want to make a profit then I'm not against that, but I personally didn't think that's what Basschat was all about. Maybe I've got my rose-tinted specs on again. Would you be happy , for example if the owners thought they could profit from selling on your personal information or any pictures you've posted ala Facebook. That would be another revenue source they could easily make some cash from. I also think £7 for listing a £51 pedal is getting close to being ripped off, I prefer the ebay model of cheap listing and percentage of sale but that again is just my opinion.

I can't imagine that ped and kiwi would flog our info without at least telling us they were going to do so. And yes, I think there should be a separate fee structure specifically for pedals and FX costing £50-£100 of say, around £2-£4, or a percentage as you say, but meanwhile you still have the option of eBay for pedals etc, which at the moment is more feasible.

I don't think there's any suggestion - or possibility - of the owners selling our personal info.

I see where you're coming from ( ), and I hear what you're saying (  ), but I'm struggling to see how I'll lose sleep over it.

If the consequence is that a small number of people who only ever wanted to use Basschat as a cheap alternative to eBay decide to stick with eBay, that's their problem.
That's a big "IF".
I've tried to sell 3 items on here in the past. All at what I felt were good prices (which was reflected in similar items being similarly priced in the BC Marketplace)
One sold in the worst transaction I've had. Ever.
The other items attracted offers which were simply not acceptable.

Off to the 'bay they went and sold for the amount I asked for them. To local bass players (I don't do shipping)
For my most recent sale, I didn't even bother listing it here, fees notwithstanding. Edit- and now a second one has sold on Ebay almost immediately, for a little more than I'd anticipated. I strongly doubt it'd have made as much on here.

So.. In my experience, Ebay works better for me. Why would I try BC first, pay £7 per item (for those previously described) , have them not sell, be forced to withdraw them, pay Ebay listing fees and sell them there?

I simply can't afford to use a medium that doesn't work for me when selling.
I have bought one item from here, and it all went swimmingly.

From a philosophical point of view, why charge the vendor and not the buyer?
If I were buying an item for, say, £200, I'd gladly pay a 5% surcharge. Maybe I'm alone and it would render the marketplace uncompetitive in a broader sense.
The logic being;
If I'm selling, I need the money, or I'd not be selling
When I'm buying, I have the funds available, and there's always a few percent of "stretch" in the budget...

But didn't you just say that you were OK with profit being made from Basschat?

So, it's OK to make profit in a way that you think is acceptable, i.e. listing fees but not profit in a way you don't think is acceptable, i.e. selling your personal information. I think we have the same opionion, it's just I don't agree so much with the listing fee approach either.

I would probably be more wary to sell now. I understand the site needs funds to run, but personally I don't sell or buy that often.

I agree that the buyer should be charged some/all of the cost of the advert. Many WON'T agree with that though.

There are certain basschatters who have, in my eyes, abused the for sale area and basically got 'tat' for a good price from Cash Converters/eBay/seller with less knowledge, then sold it on here for a good profit. I disagree with that. It isn't a shop.

In fact, one item that was in no way tat was on here about a year back, I almost bought it, then realised it was actually on a gumtree type site for £150.00 less from a totally different seller in the same area. I found evidence that it was exactly the same item, pointed it out to the seller on here, and then it vanished apart from the advert on here. Literally as soon as I pointed it out.

I mean, who honestly has 10 or more old Trace amps, one a week or so, and sells them on here. They were bought for profit purposes only, (I use this as an example).

Ah, sorry - I misunderstood you. i thought you meant selling the details on the sly.

If it was made clear what I was signing up for, and it was above-board, and I could click the 'no' button, I'd have no problem with it.

I'd have thought that the mods might have spotted that and dealt with it...
Will they be less likely to in the future if it generates income for the site?

If the forum's conditions are met, anyone can sell whatever they like for whatever price they see fit. Items are only worth what the market will stand and what the buyer is willing to pay. If something is seen as too expensive it won't sell.

There's no rule saying you can't sell ten or more identical amps, one after the other... is there..?
