Anyone know of recommended amp techs in the Glasgow area? Bassmans for servicing and an Ashdown ABM 500 that wants to explode by the sound of it?!

Just had my vintage 1965 Ampeg B-15 restored by Steve Rowse http://www.stevesamps.co.uk/ - highly recommended for valve amps.

I'd recommend Steve Rowse in Godalming - bit closer to you and as he works from home, he's a lot more reasonable. Done 4 or 5 amps of mine.

+1 to the above. Popped down to Steve today to get my ailing Hartke looked at and whilst there he had a look at my ailing Warwick too, all sorted, will get a chance to give them a good cranking next week. Top bloke at a good price and served a monster cup/mug/flagon of tea to go with my supplied HobNobs which he was grateful for!

After a brief hiatus Steve Rowse has moved from Godalming and is opening his new workshop in the Bath / Bristol / Somerset area during December 2014. Contact details here

He does lovely work; I've got a Bassman, a Princeton, an SS practise amp and a Copicat already lined up for servicing  Edited by skankdelvar

He does indeed, Steve did my Bassman 70 a couple of years ago. Lovely friendly knowledgeable chap with a house like 'the museum of amps', or something. They were EVERYWHERE!

South Wales Tube Amp Tech

Just had my rumbling, crackling, barking Heritage B-15 repaired by Anthony at Tube Distinctions.

Great guy, fixed my problem quickly, it cost less than I expected - so all good.

He's just north of cardiff

Iain @ Glasgow Studio Electronics changed my 110V Ampeg SVT4 PRO to 230V.
This was one of the older models without seperate transformer tappings.
Newer models just need a bit of soldering. This one needed the full Tx replaced.
At £265 quoted up front i thought wasn't too bad.
Did an excellent neat job inside with no fuss and was happy to work round my time schedules getting into Glasgow.
All in all i would recommend for any electronic repairs or mods.

Dave

Recommended tech in Nottingham - Dave Ball - very fast and reasonably priced. Good with valve amps but can repair pretty much anything.

Thanks to this thread, I used the services of Dave Ball to repair a solid state power amp. He has been doing it for decades so knows his stuff - valve, SS, d class, anything. Nice chap, good communication, quick turnaround and reasonably priced. Recommended.

Just a heads-up really. I contacted Mike at 'Amploft' Re: fixing my little Trace Elliot BLX head. He only had it a week and it's back and sounding as it should (insert sarcastic comment anyone ;-)

Thoroughly nice chap, kept me fully informed all the way and he plays bass :)

He is based in Bristol and I wanted somewhere close that wasn't one of these places that take your gear and then farm it out to someone else, I couldn't be happier with the service, so consider 'Amploft' well and truly 'plugged'.

Can anyone recommend a tech to work on a MarkBass LM2 ?

I've got problems with the volume/gain going up and down erratically. Not big-style, but it's a pain. My guess is there's a leaky capacitor. So I recon it's nowt too serious, but it takes a man with proper equipment to know for sure.

I'm in East Herts. So someone in Herts/ North London would be good.

Never used them myself, so not a personal recommendation, but - I use rehearsal rooms in Stevenage from time to time, and the guy who runs the place has all his repairs etc done by http://www.theampworkshop.co.uk/

Does anyone know a reliable Amp-Man/Woman in the Lea Valley area? I have 2 services and a couple of challenges for them.....
Try Malcolm in Edmonton - 07760 245510. He fixed my amp a few years ago. Not sure if he's still on that number, but give it a go.

Another is sickamps.com in Harlow. I can't say I've used them.

Just another big +1 for using Amploft in Bristol. Mike took on my rather faulty GK 700RB and has competley sorted every problem and the amp is now working perfectly, which is even better than when I first received it! So if anyone in the Bristol/South West area needs any amp repair/maintenance then Mike should be your first port of call. Edited by Josh

Rob at Pro Audio Services in Coalville (Leics) has repaired a couple of Mackie SRM450s for me - handles guitar and bass amps too.

I've seen his name mentioned on this thread previously but I have to give another mention to Roland Lumby at The Amp Clinic in Manchester. He's resurrected an Acoustic 370 I bought from another Basschatter, sold to me as being in full working order and ready to gig. Sadly the amp was in fact a total basket case but Roland has pulled out all his formidable stops and got it running sweetly again.

In addition to replacing some missing transistors (??!) and doing a full service job and getting rid of the horrible crackling he has also had to refit the heat sink and chassis properly. This involved tapping the holes to suit modern day M6 screws when he had no American spec ones to hand. He’s also fitted new feet to the side and bottom and looked through his entire knob collection for replacements for a chrome rotary knob cap and EQ slider.

It’s always a pleasure to visit Roland and Jules and you know your amp will be in good hands and definitely worth the drive from Scotland to deliver and collect poorly equipment. Anyone who refers to his customers amps as ‘his babies’ has got to be worth trusting with special bits of kit.
Even his job sheets are worth reading for the humour value. I think he should compile a load of them into a book and publish it. I’m sure he’d sell lots.

Anyone wanting to travel to see one of the few people left in the country who can properly diagnose and repair valve and s/s amps look on Facebook for Roland Lumby or message me here for more contact details.

I'd definitely recommend Roland Lumby, having used him myself. He's a great guy who certainly knows his stuff and has quite a high profile clientele; Elbow, Johnny Marr, The Waterboys. He was servicing Mark Potter's (Elbow guitarist) Fender Twins ready for their last tour when I was up there.
