Guitarchat?

Looks like it won't be for another couple of months. The problem is that the last developer didn't record what changes he had made and now we have to download the site for Ben (our server maintenance guy) to figure out what has changed and what hasn't. Then we need to install Ubuntu updates, upgrade the Invision software and create a test environment for future development. We're also vetting a new developer which may or may not work out depending on whether Ben is satisfied they can do good work. They'll be skinning guitarchat and drumchat.

Speaking of which...we don't have a colour scheme for the other sites yet. What do you think...replace the orange with blue and keep it a little brand consistent? Or go for a completely different look?

I'm in favour for a bit of brand consistency and look but with different colourings.

This ^. Some kind of familiarity would be an advantage, imo.

Thanks for the update, and 'Bon courage...' to concerned parties. Go for it..!

If you're looking for consistency I would recommend purple and green (all secondary colours)

I'm good with just this section of BC, a dedicated forum would attract the kind of people I'm glad don't frequent this forum.
I have to say that i would agree with Gareth.
i am primarily a guitarist who has just come back to playing bass and i have had involvement with general gear and guitar forums. Whilst there are plenty of educated and sensible people on these foums, there is also a proliferation of people who just seem to either give you completely false infomation, post silly and pointless comments and just cause a nuisance. This does not seem to be the case on BC. Although i would be very happy being active in various guitar orientated topics, i have found that in my short time on BC, i have learned more and been entertained more by the members than i ever have been on other forums. I would have no problem posting a guitar related question on BC and be confident to get some considered replies.
I think i would prefer to be involved with a dedicated sub section of the current BC.

How many guitar forums have you both visited which are managed like Basschat and are lucky enough to have such a great team of moderators?

Re: false information - I'd suggest never take anything at face value. Google is your friend.

That is all very true, but i meant that people putting silly comments on a serious question is not always helpful or welcome. It was more if a comment about the attitudes to the forum and perhaps the mental capacity of your average guitarist! I should know!

I fully agree that BC is far better moderated than others.
Google gives far more conflicting information quoting anyone that wants to write something. Surely that is the point about asking opinions on a forum such as this? I would hope that you are far more likely to get considered answers.

I am not against it in principle, i just don't think it necessary when you already have functionality within BC for guitar related discussion.

I understand. I respect your opinion. It's also very clear to us where other guitar forums have been going wrong.

Any special interest group is likely to develop its own culture on a forum and for this reason alone, having clarity between one culture and another is a good thing because it allow members to choose where they want to spend their time the most. We intend for there to be a single log in for both sites and the same approach to management will be taken. Members from here should feel free to post a question on guitarchat and expect the same kind of reception and quality of information that they would get here. Anything you have concerns about can be taken up with one of the mods or the admin. The main thing Chris and I hope to achieve is a stable and friendly atmosphere...how that is achieved is as much down to the members as it is how the forum is managed. I hope everyone who has shown an interest on this thread so far will be able to work on that with the admin and I a little more collaboratively, once the forum has been skinned and is running. I hope to run an online...facilitated workshop. Very much along similar lines that I do for my day job.

Also, if you help us by being active on the new forum you will also be helping to shape the community!

I understand. I didn't mean to denigrate your ideas. Having consistent log in would be very helpful. Would you be able to flit back and forth without logging out? It would be much easier to follow threads on both sites.
I would certainly like take part in the new forum when live, especially as i have more guitar related gear and experience than bass, and i would hope some of the other guitar inclined members would do the same.

I'd quite like to hear about some plans to develop this forum, for example what you are hoping to do to make the blog work again, restore the wiki and take a look at the backlog.
The replacement blog software (it wasn't part of the core software) has been chosen.
AFAIK there are no plans to restore the Wiki as it's minimal use didn't warrant keeping or maintaining it.
I have no idea what you mean by 'backlog'.

Fie! And you a roister-doistering agrarian music specialist? A 'backlog' is the log you keep at the back of the fire, all ready to go, like.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/backlog

Hence the much-performed song 'Hoy The Backlog!':

'Hoy the backlog, hoy it over,
hoy it to the back.
An hoy ye now the backlog
no fire shall thee lack

All:

Hoy the Backlog
Hoy the Backlog
Hoy the Backlog
Hoy the Backlog Hoy!'

The fretboard is in dire need of a design/usability overhaul if they want to get numbers up, imo. Because of that, I think there's still a gap in the market up for grabs since the demise of musicradar. I would guess that musicradar had significantly greater numbers than BC at its peak... that's a lot of unfulfilled GAS.

MR had sales, wanted ads, and parts all in the one forum - it sucked!!! These should be split up imo. BC has a far better structure imo.

New users on a new system should probably not be overrun with too many rules at first - remember that the rules here (48hr bumping, prices for trade items) came in gradually over time as a reaction to user behavior.

OK well the news I was going to share is that we DID have a developer lined up and poised to sign a contract but he pulled out literally at the last minute. This is turning into a f***ing joke but, personally I've stopped laughing. We've got interest from two more however and we're waiting to hear back on a price. Part of the problem appears to be that there's not enough work for them to be seriously interested.

So...in the meantime, we have talked about setting up a sub forum on here to at least get something kicked off. However, there is a caveat...

One of the features we'll install with the next Invision upgrade is a single sign in to Basschat, Guitarchat and Drumchat. What we don't know yet is whether the administration behind the scenes is done from a single location or from a location for each of the websites. It would make it kind of simpler if it was one, which would also mean that when we do get the other sites up we could transfer threads between forums.

BUT...

...we don't know that yet. So if we do set up a sub forum, there is a risk that we may not be able to transfer threads over to the other sites. That's no reason to not kick things off quietly though.

Its enough of a struggle right now to get the thing set up...baby steps first, Pete! I plan on consulting with the core of interested members on what they would like to see once we've achieved lift off. :)
