Fave guitar solo?

We're all bass players here but there's no doubting there's little better to do with your time than listen to a guitar solo. Especially when you know you can switch it off afterwards and not have to speak to the guitarist.

My fave solo ever is by Pink Floyd on the track 'Wearing The Inside Out' - the solo at the end of the track just sounds like the guitar is speaking... whilst I consider some guitarists to make their guitars sing, I've always found Floyd solos are intellectually superior and just so complex and multi layered. I can listen to this solo again and again and never tire of it.

I was thinking we should all post a youtube clip of our fave solo with a time stamp to say when the solo begins. Check out 5.10 here:

Great stuff so far, guys!

I guess my favourite guitar solo ever is this one by Dean DeLeo. I love this band, love this album, love this song and this guitar solo gives me goose bumps every time. A tribute to Jimi Page, but better!

The one I love is this, by DJ Ashba of Sixx AM, in Live Forever. There is so much melody in it, instead of impressing with a zillion notes a minute. A hark back to the years when you could actually sing a lead guitar solo. Clicks in at 3:31.

This. I love this song. I think it's probably my favourite ever. I can't remember exactly where in the song it is, so you'll have to listen to the whole thing :)

This I regard as a solo without some singing in it!

It blew me away the first time I heard it - and I'm a pretty big Hendrix fan!

It's just some kind of undefinable quality that I'm unable to describe that just does it for me - and it always will. For my ears I doubt very much if it will ever be bettered.

Basically the last 5 minutes is a solo, and it's a perfect solo, it's about melody not technical w***ery.

Not sure I'd call it a solo really but the guitar melody that comes in at 4:27 is just sublime, as is the whole song, it's a masterclass in melody.

OOOOOH ... it would have to be the opening 2 minutes of "Power to Love", by Jimi Hendrix. It's on the "Band of Gypsys" live album ...

I can't believe no one has posted any Cream yet. Regrettably I can't find my fave versions of the live solos on youtube, but for your delectation here's Eric, Jack and Ginger. Solo starts around 1min 58.

And then there's Carlos, not of Jackal fame. I can remember the first time I heard Samba Pa Ti, aged 14, and I've always enjoyed this as one of my favourite solos.

This album got me into Gary Moore as a solo artist - the solos are all just so powerful. This is a collection of all the solos off the album.

And coming up to date, this is Joe Bonamassa from 2006, covering a whole bunch of people.

For a solo fitting within the context of the song, tone, playing and everything I've never been able to hear better than this yet..........

A very young Micky Moody, and a band I discovered by accident as a young sprog, when I went to see Nazareth with my sister; Snafu were support. I loved both bands ever since....................... pity about the prog rock keyboards though.

Not really a solo but the outro on the extended version of "Freebird" (three solos for the price of one?) gets me every time, sublime.

For a solo hook then (I know it's old and cliched) but they don't come much better than "Layla"
