Nearly?

Oh yeah! Forgot you are a Lakland fan!

Not gigging tonight? I'm on a break - the magic of mobile phones eh?! It comes to something when the totty is so bad I check in on bass chat!

So how's your lovely Spitfire at the moment?

I'm picking up my Rumour 4 at some point this week. Time for me to go all 4 string purist again for a while! Been looking forward to getting it back in my hands.

Oh yeah, Bernie is working on something mega at the moments. Ill post pics as soon as I get some (eg take some!)

Shes just fabulous as ever, and seems to sound better than i remember after playing a new purchase! settle on Elixie strings, they seem to be the only ones that stay fresh past a month or so of playing. Yep, had a brief dabble with 5's but 4's is what its about really, stay pure. Oh yep keep us up to date with all at hq and ur ne rumour.

My new Rumour is a long way off yet! But yeah, you'll know in time!

Not really experimented much with string. I find that the eq helps keep that new string sound for longer. I'm not heavy on strings though. I play with a nancy boy touch and it would appear I don't sweat...!

Ah this is where it all started for me!

This is the bass owned by Mark Howells who runs Aroundabout Sound in Cheltenham and is the first GB that I ever played and after playing this bass I was hooked on the sound and feel but rather than buy his I decided to get Bernie to build one just for me!!!!

It is a fantastic bass and plays very well indeed.

It is a good price but in my mind the thuya wood was just to reminiscent of leopard skin print! Still each to their own and at £1,300 it would be a steal.

Good luck anyone who goes for it you won't be disappointed.

Mark

I've always liked that Spitfire - there's some crazy wood action going on there.

Still got to take some photos of the Rumour4 and put them on here... when I have 5 mins...!

For the sake of the thread, I'll post the pics from the auction here so they aren't lost when the auction ends and long forgotten about.

Yeah it's pretty busy isn't it?

Can you let us know a bit more about your Rumour4 - I am very intrigued indeed!

I was gigging with the Rumour the other night and realised that as it plays so fast I was actually getting ahead of the song whilst playing quite a fast thumb/slap section. I think Bernie should put a "Watch Your Speed" warning on each bass as they really do make you play faster because they are so smooth and quick in the neck - fantastic!!!

Now I am confused!! Is that a new one for you or an older one that you have just bought?

Wood looks fantastic though - what is that?

I bought it off somebody who is having a Spitfire built at the moment - I think he is made to live by that one in one out rule... I had a few mods done to it - new bridge, new tuning pegs and back to the finishers for a repolish etc... so it looks brand new - not a mark on it (no dings or anything)! Just waiting for new knobs (Hipshot O-rings). All that gold is too bling - I want to break it up with a little gold and black.

Interestingly enough, I played it when Bernie had it and he was putting single coils into it. I loved it then and wanted it! Strage how things work out eh?! Played with the single coils for a while but then had Bernie put the original humbuckers back in - as good as the single coils were, I prefer having the versatility of the humbuckers.

The wood? It's double stained quilted maple. It's quite a nice example - especially with the rear facing... and it plays like a demon... a proper little funk machine!

I was checking out some of the quilted double stained bursts... I know you've seen Mr B's before... but these two are beautiful... And I've also put another interesting item up... the prism finish!

I've got some more.. but I don't want to spoil it all in one go do I?

Ah the good old one in one out rule - mind you when you start talking about GB's I can understand that a little! I should imagine your household insurance bill is quite scary judging by the list of GB's that you have or will have shortly!

What's wrong with gold knobs!!!!!!

It certainly is a sweet looking bass alright - I could see the sense in going for a single coil option to offer a different tonal palette but hey if you like the humbuckers just have more of 'em. TBF with the sounds that you can get from them I don't know why anyone would need to look at anything else. I still piss myself laughing every time I flick the "slap" switch down and press the MultiComp on - Mark King sound in two easy moves, I just wish I could then play like him.

I think that eventually I may get rid of the KSD 5 and order a Spitfire 5 as I do like the feel of them and could go for the maple board that I lamented over for so long when having the Rumour built. The KSD feels so heavy and toneless after playing the Rumour. Might just have to wait for this bloody recession to bugger off first though. :)

It's not too bad actually - the only one which was a bit of a bind is the Rumour 5 which had international (outside of Europe) coverage.. but I took that off. I figured if I was ever going to take it anywhere, I'd just phone up and get the insurance for the period for which it's outside Europe.
What's wrong with gold knobs!!!!!!
Nothing... although I thought the amount of gold on it was a little excessive with the original Schaller bridge... hence the new smaller profile with less gold on it. The mix of gold and black, to my eyes, now looks about right. Once the Hipshot O rings are back on (gold with black rings around), it will just about be perfect!

With the single coils, it was ultimate slap and the p bass tone was pretty good... but I prefer the larger pallet offered by the humbuckers. The "slap" switch is brilliant isn't it...? Although I do think you have a problem with your bass... as soon as my switch is engaged, my body become possessed by Mark King. Does yours not do that...? :D

The Spitfire 5s are lovely. I always thought that a GB always sounded like a GB because I was convinced all the sound came from the circuit... but now I think differently. They all have the GB sound about them... but the Rumours defo sounds different to the Spitfires. There seems to be a stronger fundamental on the Rumours as opposed to the Spitfire. Whether you would notice on the gig... well, I'm not too sure, but in isolation, you can hear the distinct difference. Similarly, the 4 string Rumour sounds different to the 5 string... but the 4 string makes me play a lot differently to the 5... far more acrobatics happening on the 4! As for the maple board... yeah, Spitfire for to me has to be maple... but defo not on the Rumour. The Rumour just looks a little... well... odd...

Just a thought about the KSD... have you thought about making it passive for making a completely different beast? I know what you mean though, as much as I love the Lakland, I get frustrated at the somewhat limited tones I have available. That GB preamp is certainly a work of genius... as for other developments in the electronics department... well... let's just say I have heard rumours ;)

Stop avoiding the inevitable. Put your order in quick! Bernie's board is going crazy... and it's going to get more crazy soon! - no I'm not ordering any more..... hmm... fretless...?
Hmm. Early days yet and my Rumour does have single coils and the new pre, but I have to say my old black fretless Spitfire plays and sounds better to me.
It's odd isn't it? Perhaps you have got so used to your Spitfire, everything else seems a little alien?! I did umm and arr over the pickups but as mentioned previously, I prefer the versatility of the humbuckers over the single coils. As great as that slap bass sound was with the single coils, for me, I think I made the right decision reverting back to the humbuckers... having said that, the humbucker slap sound is not to be sniffed at - it's awesome. James D is the guy to ask about the single coils and slap - I wonder if they are still doing it for him. Having said that, he hasn't got his Spitfire bass with him at the moment - it's being LEDed up. Not that any of that interests you anyway as I know what you think of slap!

In terms of the preamps, I had GB level up the outputs between the Spitfire and Rumour5 and then the Spitfire came alive. I wouldn't have even noticed had I not got the Rumour5. How are the outputs on the Spitfire vs your Rumour? Comparable or not?

I've got all my basses playing just right now - in that I now have no preference to which I pick up. The 4 is fast becoming my noodling bass though! Small, dinky and super fast action. Now that all the tweaks have been done, I love them all! The new bridge on the Rumour4 has let me get the set up just right. The 1mm more adjustment allowed me to get the thing spot on. The Lakland doesn't really get a much of a look in nowadays... which is a shame because it really is a nice bass.... just not nice enough! Maybe it is time for the GB fretless...

Well i thought i better just chip in and let you guys know my Rumour orders been in for 5 or 6 weeks now.
My spec so far is for a super light bass, (which Bernie says is no problem), 32in scale, slim custom neck width and profile, ebony fingerboard, the face wood is the other piece of Buckeye burl that was used in James Spitfire although turned around and not utilising the sapwood.
I have not finalised the total electronics spec yet as there is no hurry, it will have leds but i'm not sure about the all singing and dancing ones. It will be used a lot for slap so i will be having the 'switch' all you guys are talking about!
That's it really for the moment, i know it is going to be a long few months but time flies and i have plenty of fingernails!

The orders been in for 5 or 6 weeks? Should be ready in a couple of weeks then.... :)

32 inch scale? - that thing is going to absolutely fly...

My Rumour 5 is probably the heaviest that has been built due to the maple core... but it's not at all heavy... (despite what certain publications write...). I can happily play a couple of hours on a gig no problem. Bernie is a player who's been there doing the gigs - he knows that the last thing you want is a heavy bass... (hence why he rejected a load of KSd bodies and got proper weight ones!)

Was just looking at some pics of James bass tonight.

It looks like it has been on it's travels and blessed at Bernie's and Deb's special tree.... (it happens to a few of them!)

I think that wood could look pretty cool for a Rumour.
