PS - it's "I heard..." but for the sakes of humour, I'll let you off. ;)

Come on then. You a Rumourite or a Spitfireite now? Different beasts don't you think?? And more pics... hows the neck - I know that the neck on that one is particularly slinky... great looker too.
Yes the neck is skinny. It sounds so much different to the Spitfire with the same strings I am wondering if Status have changed their strings. Looks wise I am not fussed. Preferred the quilt maple on the one in Kent but he wants a lot more money so he didn't get mine.
I think they sound a lot different despite the circuits and pickups being the same. I find the Rumour to be a more positive, bigger sound if that makes sense. I don't know if that is because of the through neck (I wouldn't have thought that would have made any considerable difference...) but there is something going on between the two models.

Yes I would say thats exactly it. Its probably more than the through neck. The body is alder as opposed to swamp ash (although it is lighter but thats probably the bridge and metal knobs and will be fixed when it gets stealthed).

If I cut all the bass from the Rumour it sounds more like the Spitfire but if I boost the bass on the Spitfire it sounds nothing like the Rumour ;)

Interesting to hear the thoughts on the two different models from you all - which one in your opinion is best suited for funk music which is mostly tight fingerstyle but does have a fair bit of slapping in it?

Dont know really. I would have to use them both at rehersal at least before I could say one was better than the other. Yes they sound different solo'd but I suspect that when I use them with the band the differences will be less noticible, and I wont slap so I could not comment on that. And the fretless is always going to have a different sound.

Bit difficult to answer that - the original Spitfire circuit sounds different to the Rumour circuit... and then the fretless that ferret has is loaded with flatwounds right? Combined with the fact that it is a fretless, it's going to be substantially different although the GB character will undoubtably be there. As ferret suggests, in reality, in the band situation, there isn't a great deal of difference.

In answer to the slap question, there is something more "jazz" about the Spitfire - maybe that is to do with the bolt on neck...

As for the funk, finger, slap question, I wouldn't say either does any better, I would quite happily take either bass out on a gig.

Maybe I have opened up a can of worms here... I guess each is going to sound slightly different due to the construction - I haven't got two GBs with the same wood for a core for starters! My Rumour 5 has a solid maple core which is pretty dense which may account for the difference...?

I think I want to track down my old GB. It was on Ebay a year or so back, but I missed out on it. It'd be nice to have it back, since it was custom-made for me, and is unique amongst GBs for several reasons. Bernie tells me he's still got the designs for it, so he could make another, but it'd be nice to have my old one back.

So if anyone sees a custom ash/maple GB Rumour 5-string going, with a custom body shape, and two Hipshots, let me know. ;)

Some pics to keep you going until I get some better ones.

Took it to Bernie tonight for some tweaks - Andre had guitar strings on it. He was trying to fix a lads Manson for him, they are in the studio tomorrow and his bass kept cutting out. Bernie gave it a good squirt of pot cleaner and the pre-amp fell to bits. Poor kid paid 1500 quid and only got a gig bag to put it in. Bernie tried his best but could not fix it.

Anyway I let him have a go on my Rumour while Bernie was poncing about, but his eyes popped out like organ stops when I got my black fretless out. And he could have had that for what he paid for the Manson.
Ferret - a signature update is due!

What do you reckon to the Spitfire (although I know 5s aren't you thing) and Rumour then? I'm waiting for the tweaks on the Rumour 4 - I'm looking forward to getting it back!
Yes you are probably right - sig update is due.

As for the Rumour - apparently she is called Gracie - I will have a better view after the gig on saturday but so far I am loving it.

Gracie? Who named that? The original owner, Bernie or Debs?

 • 2 weeks later...

At long last the call has finally happened! Bernie called on Friday and was playing my bass and told me that it is ready to go! Even made me listen to it for a few seconds - now that it torture!

Hoping to go up one day in the week to get her - can't wait.

Will post some pics as soon as I have her home.
Yeah - I wonder what made you change your mind to electric pink...?
Yes but he has to endure a Tina Turner gig first!!!!

Hoping that the bass is everything that I want it to be and more - quite nervous now. A lot of money to spend if it ain't perfect!
Good show! That's another one out of the door. Bernies at the O2 tonight... Backstage pass - alright for some! Meanwhile, I'm still sitting in the Slug and Lettuce in Soho... Anyway, enjoy the bass!
