Just spoke to Bernie today actually, gonna get him to fit the 5 pin socket to the Spitfire, so its easy to interchange with the Rumour, and might be trying something a bit different with the LED's....... daveski Posted May 6, 2009 Share Posted May 6, 2009 Well EBS freak i'm actually playing a Mayones 32in at the moment, a very nice easy to play bass but not exactly what i'm after and occasionally i play my 32in Alembo but that is rather heavy if used over extended periods.... i.e 15 minutes!!! The reason i went for the buckeye is i was after something slightly different, then i went to pick up an amp and cab of Bernie, saw James Spitfire in the flesh and Bernie mentioned he still had the other half left over from James build, i told him what i was looking for and we thrashed out some details ,although in every aspect apart from the buckeye it is going to be different from the Spitfire. I have seen some buckeye on Alembics that i can't really stand, all eyes etc but this piece although understated is still very interesting too. What is it about it that doesn't quite hit the spot? Alembic - heavy? Yeah... I hear you. Has it got the infamous head dive? For the all but brief periods that I have played the Alembic 32 scale, I found them to be incredibly fast to move around but I found that my left hand got tired of supporting the neck. The second I let go, the headstock wanted to bond with the floor. What is the Alembic made out of? Has it got a large body mass also? Yes - buckeye certainly makes you stand out from the crowd. You really have to find a nice piece - otherwise it looks like somebody has been sick on your bass!! It seems to be very much the choice for singlecuts at the moment. I did suggest to Bernie that he makes a singlecut Rumour but he doesn't seem to keen - he's never been a fan of the single cut Merrick basses... daveski Posted May 7, 2009 Share Posted May 7, 2009 Ebs freak The thing i'm not totally happy with on the Mayones is the tone, its a nice bass to play and has a nice slim neck profile, but somewhat limited tonewise with Bartolinis and an Aquilar preamp. Plug it straight into a desk and it's pretty good straight away but if you want to experiment it's limited. The Alembic i've got is a standard point body shape,so there is no neck dive and you are right it is so easy to play fast with the narrower string spacing, but it is heavy and it's also got a hollow body i requested that for weight saving!!! Thats why i'm really going for a Rumour because i can have the great electronics package, super light overall weight, narrow string spacing, slim superfast neck, great customer service, i think when it turns up my other basses will be going back in there cases and under the bed. Gunsfreddy2003 Posted May 7, 2009 Share Posted May 7, 2009 Russ, Well I tend to only use the slap switch for tunes that I slap all the way through and then go the whole hog with the MultiComp to for the full on Mark King experience. For fingerstyle stuff I tend to have the bridge pickup favoured and with just a smidge of bass and treble boost. The mid stays flat most of the time for me. I will add though that you only need a tiny amount of boost to get a killer sound. I depped for a band the other week and there were a few reggae tracks in their set so really went for it and wound the neck pick up to full cut the treble and full boost on the bass knob and played the songs with my hand above the neck pickup. The drummer loved it and said that it made his balls shake which was a first! James.[/quote] Bang on for slap! I always tend to have the boosts more extreme with the volume rolled back. That way, whatever eq I'm using, I've got a global control over the volume. For finger style, I like the Jaco approach so I tend to have the bass slightly boosted, the mid quite a lot boosted and treble rolled right back. Back pickup of course.
