Hey that’s my bass! Bernie made the maple neck for her back in October. It's amazing she’s now been immortalised in an ad in Bass Player Mag. Oh and hi it's my first post ;)
Yup - she's a beauty. One of my faves - you got to admit that piece of wood is pretty much one of a kind!

I remember the night that we were knocking up that advert - there were no basses around and the BGM deadline was looming. We were using a different bass for the advert but we weren't quite feeling it. Bernie went up the road and got your bass, a few photos later and the work began on the 2nd cut of the advert. It was fun if not a little stressful. It wasn't the original bass for the ad - I went home and spent the next few hours doing the "angel" bass and sent it to Bernie for him to compare with the original ad. We decided that it was that bass which should make the final cut for the mag. So there you go. Immortalised in print for ever!

PS my Rumour 5 also appears in that ad... the texture of the background is actually a close up of the figure in the wood. It didn't really come out too well in print but you can see it on the digital version.

Yeah that piece of wood is pretty special. It's funny I new I wanted a darker piece of wood for the top and my original plans were to try and use a piece of Thuya that I'd left at Bernie's a few years back, but I walked in and saw the Angel body and that was that.

Well I'm chuffed it ended up being my GB in the final ad. It almost didn't though as I was fighting to get back from work in time for Bernie to pop round and pick it up. So, many apologies if I kept you waiting.

I can just make out the quilted top of yours in the ad, very cool i hadn't noticed that before. I must say both your basses look amazing in the flesh...

Some more photo's of her -

English walnut - I remember seeing that piece for the first time and being completely blown away by it - of course, the original completed bass did have a different neck on it but I have to say, I think that the lighter fingerboard contrasting against the body really works. If I recall correctly, the wood actually came from a tree that was felled in a garden in Sussex... so fairly local. There are some pics at the start of the thread with Angel and original neck. There are a couple of pieces of wood from the same cut of tree that are left but both have been earmarked - one for the guitar that I posted a few pages back.

I can't remember what time I left Bernie's bassment that evening. I seem to recall it past midnight. Then I drove back home. Then I did the Angel photoshopping for the advert and then got back in the car for another day on the road. Not much sleep happened that night... but there you go, the Angel advert nearly didn't happen. We basically took the photos of the Angel basses when we got it from you but we just weren't feeling them. The photos just looked a little lack lustre. Then there was the one shot - the one that was used. In the actual photograph it looked very flat and dull... but once I started to cut it out, it began to look stunning. I'm glad that it did make the ad - I think it is one of the most striking pieces of wood that I have ever seen. Bernie didn't want a Rumour in the advert as there was going to be a Rumour reviewed in the magazine and there would be some photos of that bass in the review... but I'm just a bit sad that nobody got to see the back of the Rumour. There's not many basses where the back looks as good as the front!

The wood is very striking. The guitarist who I took down for a trip to Brighton (I can't even remember the reason he came down with me - I think it was to see the woods for the Rumour 5) saw the Angel bass and I think, that, along with the LED show made him think he wanted a guitar built by Bernie. So next day, he sent a deposit. A few discussions later and Bernie came up trumps by finding the fascia as show a few pages back. As for progress on that particular build, well, Bernie has a few to get out of the door before then, but no doubt I'll show some pics here.

Anyway, in short, nice bass.

Hi Russ,

Great - but would look better with my Rumour on it!

Getting a bit worried now I bought a KSD 5 string from Bernie when I was down there last and hated it at first just could not get used to it. Now I have sold my Warwick and have been using the KSD as my main bass for a few months I am loving it and really worried that when the Rumour (which is 4 string) is ready I will hate going back to 4 strings!
;)

Don't worry dude. The 4 will be fine! I'm flirting with the 4 at the moment and I am loving it. The 4 and 5 influence my playing in different ways - both good! If you loved 4 before, you'll love it again.

As for the wallpaper, make sure you get some suitable pics of your bass when it is finished and I'm sure something can be knocked up.

I hope so!

That should be no problem a mate of mine is a photographer and did a good job on my Warwick helping me to sell it on the 'bay! You can see what he did on:

www.mattbrodie.com/thumbbass

I have already lined him up to take pics of the GB once I get my grubby hands on it!

Are you in the advertising business then?

OK. A bit of porn for you guys...

first up... especially for the modo74's harlequin bass earlier and for those who haven't caught the Goodfellow bass for sale in the classifieds section...

- vid that shows Graham Gouldman of 10cc fame with a Goodfellow bass that Bernie built for him. OK, he's miming (hey it's TOTP, but you can get a good look at the bass regardless!

OK... now that you have watched the nostalgia vid... here's a sneaky peak at something which will be leaving the Bernie workshop very shortly... it's wicked - a proper stage bass, funky as, loaded with full LED works.

As I say, it's still in the final stages so excuse things like the LED control knob, it's only been put in roughly for an idea.

This bass, I think, is the best looking solid colour GB I have ever seen. In the flesh, it's ridiculous... the blue metallic really jumps out at ya.

By the way... it's coming to the midlands.

...and no. It's not me.

...sadly.

;)
What about the Style Council at Live Aid - probably the biggest audience a one of Bernies basses has ever had.
Piss on my chips why don't ya? *sulk* I was saving that one for later ;)

Anyway, the Style Council gig is second to the gig I did last Wednesday night (2 for 1 night at the bar) at the Dog and Duck. The turn out was amazing... It's the reason I felt I needed to up the rig. I just needed more oomph.

For those who know not of the Goodfellow era bass at Live Aid...

 • 3 weeks later...

So, popped in to see Bernie on Friday and the new blue one is ready to go. Feck me, it's a funk monster. Really light and it absolutely flies... A guy who had seen the bass magazine review came down to see what they are all about - he just wanted to take the blue one away there and then. Interesting to see that he was anti LEDs - until he saw them in action. Obviously, his view compared to BGMs second opion with regards to LEDs has somewhat changed now.

I was looking at the order board and I think its going to be some time before he gets to my next order..! Ah well, best comes to those who wait and all that.

Oh yeah, it was good to catch up with Mr Lager... When are you going to get a GB sorted? - forget the wife - that blue one had your name all over it! Pompey and all that.

Didn't see it - but when I did speak to him on Thursday on the phone he said that yours may be ready on Friday... it's got to be very, very close now!

yes spoke to Bernie early last week and he was aiming for the end of the week and mentioned that he would call if it was ready but I did not hear anything so I assume that there was a slight hold up somewhere.

Should get that call any day now!

You are doing OK! You are right at the top of queue... me and ferret are way, way down! Ha ha. Mind you, it's not as though I have a lack of GBs is it? My next one is going to be cool... a complete departure from my Rumour 5. Yeah, it's another Rumour...

So... you got any gigs coming up soon - when is your Rumour going to get it's first outting? You must be chomping at the bit now!

Oh yeah, did you make a decision about your EBS kit?

You too mate, lovely looking bass - needs single coils though ;) Did Dick reign that 24dB mid boost in on the other one?. I've got the missus on eBay with a couple of watchers, but the BIN might be too high.

My 4 string (the red one) has currently got single coils in it.

Yeah - it was set at 24dB. Tamed it down to 21dB...

I think the best policy for eBay is to set no reserve and start the bidding at a penny. Depending upon the state of what you are selling, it may be wise to omit a picture.
