Precision scratchplate screwhole surgery

Hi folks, I’m seeking a bit of advice on fixing up my P bass. The screwhole below the jack socket is wrecked, the screw doesn’t stay in and consequently the scratchplate lifts up when I pull the jack out. How would you go about fixing this? I’ve vaguely recall someone mentioning match splints and wood glue in the screwhole. Also, what’s the best practise for removing the scratchplate without straining the wiring? The last time I did it - to renew the under-pickup foam - I ended up having to do some re-soldering :(

If you remove the screws that hold the pickups in, you should be able to lift the scratch plate and pickup out at the same time, not straining the wires. I've never had a problem but perhaps the wires are bit short on yours.

Best thing to fix the screw hole is wood glue and cocktail sticks. Cocktail sticks are hardwood, not soft like matches.

I had the same problem, all I did was fill the problem hole up with superglue, left it for a day then re-introduced the screw,
I've removed the scratchplate a few times since and it's still holding fine.

I've done this before too. Don't think it's the recommended technique, but it'll do for my beater P Bass!

Don't fill it with superglue, definitely use a matchstick or similar glued in the hole. Superglue is to hard, you need to use something flexible else you pose a small risk to splitting the body, not to mention the grip won't be as tight.

As far as soldering goes if it breaks that easy it was done by a monkey to begin with and needed redoing.

Ooh, I forgot to report back. Filled the hole with superglue, then read the don't-fill-the-hole-with-superglue reply while it was drying :-O So the next day I drilled a little channel through the glue before re-assembling, and all is fine.

...except for what seems to be the design flaw whereby that screw and its neighbours are under stress every time I pull the jack out :-(
