It's JV75786 - you probably can't read it but it's on a wee sticker on the end of the box & here on the neckplate - what kind of anorak  . I particulary like the handwritten description in big black letters!! It also has in small writing, " Hold Donald Campbell", that's me that is!

I've never spotted this thread before! Will get a pic up of my "Fender" logo'd '57 tomorrow. Looks almost identical to Lukes, with serial number JV079**, though admittedly with a tiny bit more "character", though from love and much use rather than carelessness!

I've owned it from new, bought in 1982 from the little guitar shop (I wish I could remember its name - help!) that used to be in Claverton Street in Bath. I don't have the box, though I do have the original inspection tag!

Its all original except the bridge poles were replaced with brass ones very early in it's life, and about 4 years ago the original single laminate scratchplate cracked in a line across the volume pot, so had Eltham clone me a replacement. I still kept the old one, it lives inside the lining of its flightcase.

Well Guy asked me to stick this up here (cos I worked out how to post pics and he hasn't yet :D - and well... here's my new favourite bass, looks lovely! (oh and some skinny stringged thing!

Thanks for adding that Luke, I must work out how to add pics.

The Jazz is early, serial no JV88** have had it for 30 years and still play it regularly, along with a white Squier-logo JV Jazz I bought in 1984 and still have. I still have the inspection tag, but not the cardboard carton!

The other JV bass in the picture is a short-scale 6 string, but I have had trouble getting bass strings the correct length for it..

Odd detail in the Fender-logo Jazz compared with the later JV is the scratch plate is 3 ply rather than the 4 ply of the later one. I wonder if Rick's is the same and when it changed over.

I tried a lot of US Jazzes over the years, but never found one I preferred to until I bought a pre-cbs Jazz about 13 years ago

Guy,

The very first '62 reissues were all 3 ply - Black/white/tort (Large Fender decal), so I believe the 3-ply was only used for the first 9 weeks, before they changed the specs quite considerably. They changed quite quickly though. I've seen an August '82 bass (large Squier decal), and that was a 4 ply, and very poor tort.

Fender have never got the tort right on reissues, in fact they still don't, a point that spoils even expensive custom shop reissue jazz's to this day. These first JV's, and the very first Fullertons are not bad at all, but thats it. Some of the latest CS '64 relic's have terrible guards on them...and they still want $4k for them! <_<

Do you know the neck date of yours?

So, when are you selling yours?, it looks a bit rough, but I'd take it off your hands!

Seriously, very, very nice. :gas:

[/quote] JV88** or JV00** ? I found the other photo of the scratchplate you emailed ages back. It seems to be cut at a shallower angle than curent scratchplates too.

It must be JV088**?? I would guess neck date of first week of June '82? ;)

Looking at the thread, I think I'm first in the queue if there is one? :P Joking aside, it's lovely.

Thanks to you and Luke for your kind comments and for starting this thread. Your JVs are not too shabby either!

I don't think I will be parting company with it anytime soon though! The number is JV088** - I have never had the neck of any of my JVs, so not sure of the date.

The white one is later, JV805**. I spent a whole (very pleasurable) afternoon in Denmark St in 1984 trying every one in every shop. Very lightweight and very bright sounding. The pictured one is much heavier in weight and darker sounding - I had a Strat JV088** serial no about 50 off my pictured Jazz, identical wood, also quite heavy.

When the JVs came out, if you wanted a vintage style Jazz with dots not blocks, these were the only option then and are still a great bass although expensive now.

I look forward to seeing what else is posted.....

on the weight issue... how heavy are the two jazzes? The sunburst one is Sen Ash and I guess the later white one Alder* - my '57 is Sen and is pretty lightweight at just a smidge under 9lb.

* Probably Alder, I have also heard/read that some later JV's were basswood - but I meantioned that before and got shot down as a heretic. If it sounds good who cares?

Having been invited to post some pictures of my JV1 Jazz Bass by LukeFRC, here are some cool pictures made by my personal tech to my JV and to the '83 JV Jazz Bass of a beloved student of mine...
In those "double" pictures you can see both my bass (without scratchplate, naked look ;)... I've taken the lingo "porn" to the letter) and my student's.
Amazing instruments.
Looking forward to buy gareth's fiesta red one and defret mine.

Talkin' about fiesta red squier jv's jazz basses... here's a clip of my teacher, the great Gianluigi Goglia, one of Italy's finest jazz bassists, tearin' donna lee apart on a fiesta red squier jv jazz bass :)

</p> thanks! It's fallen out of favour a bit and never gets played, but after reposting my photos I went and got it out of it's case... and boy- I remembered what's good about it! :D fun to play and sounds good!

Oh,why did i have to look at this, again  :swoon:

Gorgeous and oozes a barrowload of character.

I really am annoying myself about how envious I am.

I do love your phrase about about being blessed, made me smile :) . Karma restored.

I notice your auction has ended on the 'Bay'. I was hoping you'd have second thoughts. That bass and you were obviously meant for one another. :)

I would also like to contribute with one of my Jazz Basses

JV00916
Nice Fender Logo JV with neck date 21 April 1982
Original, except for pick guard.

Is this the oldest known Fender Logo Jazz produced outside USA ?

Regards
Brian

Adding my first edition Squier JV '62 Precision, with large Fender logo. Interestingly, this has the same neck date as Rick's, so it's a pretty early model. Plays great and it's year of birth bass, so it's definitely a keeper.

I'd love a first edition '57 P to round off the collection.

So, after years of hunting, and considering a few I've seen over the years, none of which were quite good enough, but having the patience (Unusual for me!) to wait for the 'right' one, I've finally completed my set of original first series JV basses, with the addition of a near mint '57 Precision. The hunt is over, I can sleep easy!

These are by far the best reissues Fender have ever produced, far superior even to the early Fullerton Vintage reissues.

Here's the set, all together;
