Solutions for problems we don't have

Solving problems we don't have ...

At music live there was a guy selling a plastic thing about a foot long and 6 inches wide that you wrapped a single mic cable around "to keep your cable box tidy"
What is wrong with winding it around your arm and using a Velcro strap? That takes a load less space and costs a lot less..

Another was trying to sell a very nicely carved plectrum-shaped wooden box about 4 inches deep and 8 x 8. This lovely piece of wood (retailing at £35) was to put your plectrums in at home .......

Recently the music mags have been reviewing a plastic thing you attach to your bottom strap button that you pass your guitar cable through to stop jack plug socket damage in case you step on the cable ... er, like all of the reviewers I just pass my cable over my strap ...

"Monster" cable fat jack plugs "so your jack doesn't fall out"... That only happens when you use a normal plugged cable after a Monster - and if you do the cable over strap thang it's not a problem anyway..

and ... the current BG magazine has a review of the ZzYzX Snap Jack Cable which has a snap off jack end attached by super magnets ... the point is that you can plug a bunch of loose ends into your different basses and then noiselessly switch over. You leave the end in the guitar.... The end will also pull off if you stand on your cable .. this is to stop you pulling your rig over or wrecking your jack socket ... and to drain your bass batteries when you forget to take them out...
Can you imagine dropping your detached cable end on a normal stage in the dark? That comes under the same heading for me - what's wrong with muting your bass with your tuner to swap over, tucking your cable through your strap and around your amp handle?

So ... What else is out there trying to part us from our money and solve problems we don't have?

Not really in the same league - these are more boys' toys that you really don't need and that really are sad (but are secretly very cool).

I don't know about the other things, but I find the plastic things to wind cables round very useful for heavier/longer cables (eg a 15M speaker cable) - far less likely to get tangled in the cable box. Mind you I would pay more than £3.50 for one, and I still use a hand wind, or repeated fold, and velco for mic and instrument cables.

THE quickest way to tie your cable in knots, not to mention twisting it unnaturally. Wind it up into one hand... it doesn't take much longer than doing the round-yer-arm thing, but it preserves the cable's natural twist and stops it tying itself into knots the moment you release the velcro.

I can't decide whether to get the Telecaster table or the Stratocaster table. The Tele is more practical because it's a more useable shape - but then the Strat is just that bit more indulgent and decadent because it's so impractical.

I'd rather get the full on all-maple deluxe model than the standard model.

This is what happens to you when you get divorced in your 20s! I'm also after a dining table/pool table. (In dark walnut.)

Well I used to be 100% passive :) but since I've had an active bss I can see the flexibility of walking about with your pre-amp for quick big sound changes.

Try these two:

Unfortunately with CPC you need to go above £40 on an order to get free shipping, and remember that the quotes prices don't include VAT.

CPC also have a lot of other stuff pertinent to musicians: cable, plugs and sockets, adaptors, and pre-made cables, so you can soon spend more than £40 on useful stuff, and get the free shipping.

Be warned however, that as well as quality stuff (Neutrik, amphenol, vandamme etc) they also do nameless stuff at ridiculously low prices, but you get what you pay for.

A trick I learnt many years ago, from a BBC sound engineer/roady, was to coil it up into your hand, but put a sort of reverse twist into it every other coil. Very hard to describe in writing, but the affect is that you can coil it up, then hold one end and through the coil away from you and it will (should) completely uncoil itslef and lay flat on the floor without a twist in sight.

I think I need a diagram... :)

I always coil my cables by holding the end in one hand, pulling my other hand down the cable then rolling it a hole turn between my fingers and thumb, then bring my hands together, making a loop.

Then lather, rinse, repeat.

But this BBC method sounds intriguing!
