lee4 Posted May 21, 2011 Share Posted May 21, 2011 I've posted on here before about the wierd rattle on my Groove.It first started when I used Elixir strings,and is still there now I'm back with Elites. I have removed the neck,given it a shake and replaced it(not the rod),and scrutinised the bridge,but I still can't track down where it is from. It never sounds through the amp,only acoustically. I play towards the bridge;could it be something to do with this(if I play where a P pup would be there is no rattle)? If it is the bridge itself what would be a good replacement that is easy to fit? pantherairsoft Posted May 21, 2011 Share Posted May 21, 2011 2 things I'd check. 1.All the little screws in the saddles are screwed so they actually rest on the bridge. I had one saddle only resting on 1 screw and tr other vibrated like mad. 2.check the nut slots. Playthe string you notice it on the most whilst applying a little pressure behind the nut (before the string meets the machine head). It could be some brands are slightly thinner and the strin is rattling in the nut. This is quite common. Try a heavier gauge string or put a tiny bit of paper aside the string in the but and see if it still happens. Shep Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

pantherairsoft Posted May 22, 2011 Share Posted May 22, 2011 Hmmm... Often the nut vibrations travel along the string and get amplified at the bridge, hence that suggestion. If all the screws and bolts at the bridge are tight it narrows it down! Are the strings ball ended? If so, are the balls clamped tight against the bridge or are they moving. Sometimes thicker strings don't slot through all the way and the ball end can move. Odd it would be amplified loudly but worth a go. Also, do you use strap locks? Is so take the strap and locks off the bass and try again as my Schallers sometimes rattle unless I'm stood up pulling it tight. I would pull each string, unplugged and press down on everything. Only today, I have eliminated a buzz on on of my basses. Turned out the scratchplate was very slightly lifted, causing vibration. Solution, a piece of tissue at the point it buzzed, tightened up the screws again. . . . Result! Great bass, don't ever let it go. Cheers. lee4 Posted May 23, 2011 Author Share Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) Shep,I do use straplocks,and the rattle is there without them on.The strings are 40-100 so are not thick(IMHO)but I will try and check this out.Hope it's not the nut as my luthiers skills are not all that! FlatEric,I will check the plate this week.So true about these basses,and as it is the only bass that I've ever felt has been truely comfortable it'll be buried with me! Many thanks,guys.
