Which Head?

Recommended Posts

Ive got the choice of these. Both run at 350w at 8ohms. Will be using a Peavey 410TVX cab

I play a 78 P Bass in and pretty hard driving R&B band

Any experiences with either of these amps? ANY advice very welcome!!!

Hey there Doc,
don't know the Peavey amp, and Ive not played through one but I know a lot of people on here rate Peavey. Solid and reliable and give you a good sound.
Tried out a B2R while I was looking at 'grown-up' amps, and have to say I wasnt overly impressed. I f anything I thought it was particularly average sound but there was a muffly mid range frequency I couldnt dial out. may have just been a duff shop demo model but even then, I think in the price range you can do better.
You say you have the choice of those two, but have you thought about any Ashdown stuff? For R'n'B they could be really good as they're described (and I would agree) as having a modern vintage sound. MAG range aint too expensive thugh Id go to ABM if you can to stretch it.

I haven't had experience with either, but I think the obvious choice would be the Peavey. It would be more suited to your cabinet and probably give you a less coloured sound than the Ampeg would.

Just my 2 €urocents :)

I used a T-Max for years and it was a very good amp. Unlike most hybrid amps it had a pre and post volume control on the valve channel so you could get just the right amount of drive. Peavey also have a solid reputation for reliability unlike Ampeg.

I can thoroughly recommend the T-Max. Unbelievable lickle things! A mate of mine has had two now, he loves them so much. Amazing tone, and seriously loud for a cheaper amp!

I hated the only B2R I've used, but that was at a gig when I had to turn up and play through it, so I didn't have a chance to tinker properly. I was VERY disappointed though... I definitely remember that horrible mid-range thing MoJ - totally ruined my fx tone.

Looks good for the T-Max. Funny, I have used the Peavey and found it very punchy, but just had this idea that the Ampeg should be better - funny old thing!!!

Anyone else had any experience of these two?

Would the 410TVX be the best cab for the T-Max???

I use a T-Max with an Ampeg 410E. Good tone at low volumes, but because it's an 8 ohm cab the peavey clips a lot when trying to get volume out of it. I'm undecided whether to just get a new cab or a whole new rig.
