Mlucas Posted March 6, 2011 Share Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) Ok, so I'm learning the song 'Domination' by Pantera, I know the notes etc but the intro is played so fast, obviously i will keep trying but does anyone know any cheeky techniques for speeding up playing? I have tried using both pick and finger style but can't seem to get close - I'm guessing the obvious answer will be practice, practice, practice but any help is warmly welcomed! bassbloke Posted March 6, 2011 Share Posted March 6, 2011 You to play this a pick to nail the speed, sound and feel of the original. These tips will help you get the part right. Start out playing the part much more slowly than on the recording and really focus on the quality of each note. This song needs to be executed cleanly to sound good. Play near the bridge The movement should come from your elbow and forearm rather than wrist or fingers. Alternate pick and concentrate hard on making sure the pick hits the strings parallel and that you get equal attack on the downstroke and upstroke. The heavy part from 3:40 should be all downstrokes. Doddy Posted March 6, 2011 Share Posted March 6, 2011 If you are solid with the notes then it's just a matter of speed. In which case,practice slowly and accurately. If you feel inclined,get the metronome out and play it,correctly at a slow tempo. Then you can gradually bring the tempo up(say, 5 bpm at a time) until it becomes too fast for you or you are up to tempo. Only do this if you can actually play the line first-if you are struggling with this,practice it without the click for a bit. Its better to play it slowly and accurately-speed will come naturally. thumbo Posted March 6, 2011 Share Posted March 6, 2011 Rex Brown is an absolute beast of a player. Practice, practice, practice is the only remedy! As long as your technique with a pick is good and you're hitting the right notes you'll get it eventually. With learning a piece like this I'd recommend starting slow, making sure you're always hitting the notes with as much control as possible and just build up the speed gradually. Such a great tune!
