Alpha-Dave Posted June 4, 2007 Share Posted June 4, 2007 (edited) I haven't bought that particular brand of instrument, but a few months ago I bought a £60 Lindo electric bass and a £40 guitar for prototyping materials for a uni project. I started with the attitude 'How bad can it be?' and I found it was really quite bad. The finish particularly on the necks was awful or non existant, p'ups over routed, noisy electronics and various other 'zero quality' control issues that I could forgive for the price, but the worst things were that the bass truss rod snapped within 2 weeks and one of the guitar tunes broke the first time I changed strings. So I would never spend that little on an instrument again - the budget range of the big manufacturers is as low as I'll go as they still trade on their reputation unlike these short lived companies on ebin. I've considered the Thomann 5 string acoustics for £130 odd, which seem a safer bet - they're 34" scale for a start. Krysbass Posted June 5, 2007 Share Posted June 5, 2007 Also with the thought "how bad can it be?" I bought my son a new "Raypierre B4" Precision copy off Ebay last year. I really wish I hadn't. When it arrived, the intonation was all over the place - so bad, I had to remove the bridge and re-position it. (If I'd sent the bass back, the delivery costs each way would have been more than the £69.99 cost of the bass). This was fine for a while, until I noticed that the neck had bowed under the pull of the strings. So I started to adjust the truss-rod, only to find that it wouldn't tighten any more. So now we have a bass that looks quite nice, (mainly because it's hardly ever been played) but has a neck like a banana and strings getting on for 10mm off the fretboard! I'll have to find my son a new bass now, in the hope he doesn't end up being put off the instrument for life! (Anyone need a door-stop that looks like a bass?) Picked one up last summer, we were considering doing some "unplugged" stuff & busking (never happened, drummer freaked at the idea of not having a proper kit to hide behind. ) and it was surprisingly OK. Unrepentant bin-diving gyppo that I am, I bought it as "damaged/repairable" off Fleabay for a tenner! Mine was a fretless, and the "damage" was a neck with a pronounced back curve just before the nut, meaning that it was quite buzzy (but not unplayably so) at the first position marker. Otherwise it played very nicely. Sounded pleasant too, both unplugged, and particularly amplified. The downside of the medium-scale & small body is that it's not very loud, & struggles against an acoustic guitar when not plugged in. However, for just mucking about at home it's fine. Plugged in is much better - the preamp & EQ was very useable and it really sounded impressive for the cash. Have to say, I didn't try it at high volume, so I don't know how prone to feedback or other resonant nastiness it would have been in a gig scenario. It was also very solidly built - no idea what sort of woods used (mine was a natural finish) but it was pretty well put together, as far as I could see. One suitably tacky detail was the decorative soundhole rosette - it was actually one of those glittery holographic transfers! Somehow it suits it! Anyway - not having a real use for it, and not having room to justify keeping it, (and of course being a bit of a gyppo) - I put it back on the Bay & sold it for considerably more than I paid. But really, if I had acoustic GAS, I'd definitely consider another one, if (and I realise it's a pretty big "if") mine was anything to go on. I had it a total of 5 days. it went on sale 1 day after it arrived. Absolute C%#P. the neck was all warped, shocking fretwork, the only thing that was nice about it is that it hadnt fallen part yet, and it was a nice blueburst. It was mailed to me inside an acoustic GUITAR gigbag (forced in by the look of it) and covered with 2 carboard acoustic bass boxes.. Action is so high you can fit a bus under it, most screws arn't straight, paintwork is very shoddy. One of the volume knobs has been broken, the back covers don't fit well. It's been badly routed and sanded, you can see deep scratches through the (thick) paint and [s]laquer[/s] layers. I'll add more later once I've plugged it in and had a play with the action, relief and everything else. But for £61 quid, as long as the neck is alright (seems to be without playing, not warped or anything), I'm not too bothered, I'll turn it into a monster mash of ebay parts on the cheap. If you want to see what a fretless bass it like without forking out too much, it's good for that.
