I thought it was great to start with, he is a very impressive player. But, it all got very Ambient/Soundscaping and droned on a bit (but then again that's his thing these days). Jazz is getting "exposure" to people who are not familiar with it. After seeing their non jazz artist(s) perform, some people might hang around out of curiosity to hear some jazz being performed. Who knows...they might even like what they hear and seek out other jazz artists. Jazzers are always complaining that it does not have the following it deserves. Would this not be a good way of gaining potential fans ? Sometimes I think that jazz fans actually LIKE the idea of it being a minority interest, as it adds weight to the elitist concept. "If the music doesn't make you want to either dance, cry, fight or fu*k, then don't listen to it". Someone much cleverer than me said that. I see it has, no surprise, descended into "Serious" Jazz, and the rest. "That's not proper jazz", etc etc. I have a good American friend who has been drumming in Jazz music for 40+ years. His view is that Jazz is anything you want it to be, and that's why it has evolved and morphed and never stood still. Edited April 14, 2018 by mikel Additions.
