^^^ Those Bass Pod XT's are really brilliant once you get your head round them.

They are! I owned this for yeeeaaarrss. Never failed me at all and good tones I can get out of it wether I plug into a PA or amp.

Misunderstood bits of kit, I use the Pro Rack, used it in the studio for years, and I get great tones from it, but it's a stone bitch to program. I'm an engineer by trade and I think most bassists would struggle to get much from it, the presets are dire.

Dirt cheap on eBay, and I grabbed an XT bean as backup as the tone memory is identical and can be ported over USB from a computer.

go on tell us more about that pre! what's the design based on?
It's my own design, inspired by lots of other designs. The design concept is that it has a small power stage (padded to line level) to sound more like a real tube head. The power stage is currently a push-pull ecc99 (idea taken from the Firefly DIY amp project), but I intend to swap it to a SE 6L6GC.

Some closeups:

The schematic if someone's interested: http://goo.gl/kbtA9k
that's a really nice design there, loved looking at the schematic - geekily want to know what the preamp's modelled on, how does it sound? - also the small power stage - great idea - is that an original idea to implement it in a preamp? :) thanks for sharing.
