I`ve not tried either, but a mate of mine has both an ESP Les Paul bass as his main instrument, with an Epiphone Les Paul bass as his backup.

I know everyone has their own opinions and preferences re instruments, but things like that are usually indicitive of playability, if not sound.

Gotta say, he gets a great rock sound with his ESP thru a Trace - his band are very Metallica-like, so thats an idea of the sound it can do.

I had an Epi Les Paul , it came with bridge on squint, which i straightened up myself as i couldn't be arsed sending it back. Soundwise it was quite good and other than the bridge, was quite well made and nice and light. Doesn't have a contoured body like the ESP though.

I used to be an ESP dealer and always felt that their cheapest range was fantastic value for money. They were all very playable, had a nice "vibe" to them and were extremely well made. It was the mid-range models I had an issue with, really not enough of a step up to warrant the extra money. I'd go for the ESP.
