1. Like it. Good sh*t! The band nail it! The singer has a little to much Jay Kay inflection for my taste. But jay Kays are probably someone from the 70's> He's pretty good tho! there is a touch of Bill Withers in there too! nice bass playing.

  2.
not bad at all, for me I think the vocals need to be brought up in the mix... you could automate the volume in the quiet bit?
Cheers!

  3.
Hi,
Sounds good - nice one. It's a pretty good mix instrumentally, and a good song.
I find the vocals a bit quiet in the mix, perhaps this is on purpose?
Yeah it was on purpose. Plus he wasn't keen on having vocal exposed too much in quiet bit. Thaks for comments tho. Appreciated.

  4. Just thought i post this track. Please could you give thoughts on anything. i.e quality of song, playing, recording. We produced it ourselves as a band. CRANK.

  5.
Time spent out in the real world gigging & meeting other musicians GREATER THAN Time spent in bedroom widdling over chord changes EQUALS success

    IMO.
As opposed to the imaginary world! I think both are of equal importance. You won't be able to do much gigging in the 'real world' if you've never done any practising in your bedroom.

  6. Whilst my kid was in the womb i played him Mozart. Since he was born i played music to him everyday from fleetwood mac to Holst to Guns n roses. He's now nearly two. He loves music and has definite ability. He sings along to the bee gees, dances to fatboy slim. Listens intently to the planet suite by Holst and the Rite of Spring by Stravinsky. He picks up most tunes after a couple of listens and sings bits. And loves bashing my guitar or keyboard. So i 'd say it definitely helps.

  7.
So many of you play in covers bands, in fact it seems to me that all of you do!!!

What is the appeal of playing in a covers band?

    I've never understood it.

I've always played in a band that writes and performs its own material - very very very rarely have we ever thrown a cover into our set and I always felt it was a pointless exercise.

Does anyone here, apart from me, play in a band that writes its own material?
I do both. In two originals and one covers. Cos i enjoy both. Why limit yourself. I like whiskey and beer, so do both. I like blonds, i like brunettes so i do both. I like rock i like jazz etc, etc.

What's the point of just playing in an originals band?

  8.
Let's say a player is chugging along on root note quavers for the whole night. Are they doing it because it is the best
thing for that gig/band,or is it because they are unbelievably limited and cannot do any more than that?
I'm not saying everyone has to be super-technical monster players, but a good player will play what is best for the situation,
whereas a poor one will, and can, only play within their very narrow confines.
Off subject. But why tablature disapproval. Its one of the oldest forms of written music. Its like disapproving of latin. Ain't saying this cos can't read music, oh yeah and not being arsey, just curious! :)

  9.
There are two types of bad bass players:

    1) Bass players who you notice. If you notice the bass player he's doing it wrong.

    2) Adam Clayton.
Do not agree and it ain't ego. It totally depends what you are playing. What if its a tune with a good or famous bass riff. What if its hardcore funk etc

  10.
1. Thinking that bass is such a simple instrument you don't need to work hard to get good at it.

    2. Thinking that in an otherwise traditional pop or rock band a bass can be entirely divorced from its role as rhythm instrument.

    3. Thinking that good bass technique is best showcased by littering lines with little flourishes all the time.

    4. Thinking that all the parts of every song including intros and transitions need an uninterrupted bassline.

    5. Thinking that 4 strings means you're less competent.
That No.5 is spot on. When i was young i asked a drummer who had a massive kit why did he mainly set up his kit as 4 piece and not 6 or 7. He said " if ya can't rock a 4 piece pal, you ain't got a chance rocking a bigger kit". That stuck with me for bass

They will do the job perfect. There are also a hell of a lot of 300w combo's up at the mo (Trace & Ashdown) and in most cases I honestly beleive thats enough power to fill move venues unless you are playing big 2000 capacity clubs.
Thanks sir you are a gent!

  12.
I have scattered around various places the following..

    Ashdown MAG300/15
    Line 6 LD300
    Ashdown EB180/15

But I think a combo is more of a hassle than a small head and a 1x15 or 4x10 or whatever because you've got the worst of both worlds in terms of size and weight.. There are plenty of chunky combos out there.. Carvin 600, Ashdown 575/4x10 - there even was an Ashdown 8x10 combo....

    Cheers

    Thank you kindly.

  13.
So when DO you use your rig? I would have thought that a pub gig without PA support is one of the most demanding jobs that backline amplification is asked to perform; surely for bigger gigs, you'd have a proper PA, so backline would be just for stage monitoring. Or am I missing something?
You're disregarding the "Can't be arsed carting my rig about" bit. At the volume we will play at when just using vocal PA. With nowt being miked up. I would like a combo that would do that job. Done it in the past, worked fine.
I was also saying you never see them on here!

  14. Is it me or are there never any decent combos for sale on here! Just Rigs and cabs. I've got a rig. What i need is a decent combo for playing pubs with just backline and vocal PA. Can't be arsed carting my rig about!

  15.
The Peter Hook quote made me laugh. Top!!

I've not limited myself to stuff that's outside my comfort zone as I've done some singer songwriter stuff which was great and I certainly was playing very laid back. I thought that was fantastic fun. By the same token I've done stuff which has been more prog type material with tonto time changes in it. That was a brilliant challenge and one I relished as I'd never done that sort of stuff before.

I tend just to pick stuff I tend to like and see if it'll work. I quite often don't hear the bass on a song at all if it's really simple, I tend to hear what I'd play. That might be the issue. Quite a lot of the time that isn't that different, sometimes it really is very different. On a default setting though for types of bands, I'm not sure if I have one to be honest. Maybe that in itself is the problem. I don't know.

By the same token, because I listen to just about anything, I like lots of very, very different material, though this is in itself is not without it's problems. Whilst I think, say Tool are geniuses, I'm not entirely sure if I'd enjoy playing bass for them with all that unison riffing. Whilst that's probably an example that wouldn't be true if put to the test, I'm just trying to illustrate a point. If I didn't enjoy playing in a band or it's material, I just wouldn't do it. Just as paradoxically, just because I like a band's music doesn't mean I'd enjoy playing it.

I hope that kind of makes sense. It's just been a very frustrating time and in many ways, quite demoralising for me as I just want to play music I enjoy and have a reasonable amount of expression over what I play. Probably those things are mutually exclusive and I just haven't learned that lesson properly.
Don't feel like you have to defend yourself. Music is personal to the musician!
