  1. Wow what a cool story! I don’t think I was playing bass at 11 let alone have known what fretless bass is. I hope to have this experience one day. There are two basses that “got away”. One was a Ken Smith at bass direct that eventually ended up in the hands of a very lucky BCer and the other was a one off Philipe Dubrielle jazz type bass which I’ve never seen again.
  2. I think there’s quite a lot of prominent bass players who are admired for what they do, but not loved for their music. They have pushed bass playing further but the music doesn’t resonate so much. This used to be Jaco for me although I’ve now found there’s lots of music he contributed to that I do like. From the opposite perspective, I was also thinking of Michael League, who I admire as an arranger and band leader more than I do as a bass player.
  3. I reckon it’d be resold for £25-30k but not so sure it’d be sold at auction for that much considering the added fees. I reckon the upper side of the estimate is probably in the right ball park, so under £20k.
  4. My least favourite colour by a mile but I’m sure the collectors/ dealers will be all over it because of the rarity.
  5. With you there! Mine’s flipped in the space of a month and the prospects for a single person are crazy small. Hope it all works out for you.
  6. Although not for me, a Sadowsky would give you a very good rock/ blues tone, and a next level of playability.
  7. I didn’t love mine but I think it had the notorious weak G string and if I had my time again I wouldve gone for a 2band EQ. However, the new specials are much better than the old one I had. If money was no object I’d have a 30th anniversary 5 string.
  8. Were B necks standard in the period? I thought they were made to order and C was still standard. Happy to be wrong because I find B width much comfier.
  9. Is that a reasonable price? It doesn’t seem that long ago that £2.5k would be appropriate for an early 70s p bass. He should really take the neck off, almost looks like a B nut from the pics. Pics of the neck pocket and pots should be minimum.
  10. Probably the best bass rendition of this tune I’ve heard. It’s a great tune already but a superb arrangement.
  11. I don’t think endorsements have been covered before, but if you’re reaching out to them for gear then there’s an argument for it being a purposeful acquisition.
  12. Rules from page 1 - “Unsolicited/unprompted” gifts are okay. As long as you have evidence to support it is as per above… otherwise it’s GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY (your honor)
  13. Would be ideal to have both one clean and one with mojo. I’d tell you how good it is but the lottery hasn’t been very fair.
  14. I think you’re right. If music streaming didn’t pay well, investment funds wouldn’t be splurging cash on buying out artist’s catalogues.
  15. Warwick’s particularly suffer with drummer drool
  16. The rules given for tuners should still apply to strap locks. Do you smile or sigh when you buy them. Should be the answer.
  17. I think it started really with X Factor, but now especially with social media, people can get quick and easy popularity. Rather than spending time learning a craft, it does seem that today’s kids are bored if they don’t get the reward within 10 minutes. It’s also a quick win for the banks that fund record labels. Not a cost of living issue, but there’s undeniably an attitude difference between generations - speaking in general terms. If this keeps up, I’m not sure how the quality of our music will improve.
  18. I’m sure somewhere like Charlie chandler’s, new king’s Road, or Martin Peterson would know of places that can do a job. They must have seen loads over the years in worse shape.
  19. Genuine question because I’ve not played in originals for quite a few years. But when I was, a lot of local places that booked young bands were closing and only those that required decent followings remained. Do the small, local music venues for original bands still exist?
  20. I stand corrected. Here’s hoping that doesn’t change.
  21. Taking music out of school curriculum was always going to isolate plenty that can’t afford to learn privately. I was fortunate that my parents were willing/ able to spend loads on private music education until I got to the point I could earn my own money (paper round ect), but I know I was very lucky. Also my schools encouraged music all the way through my education.
  22. I had an interview for a marketing role at PMT 6-7 years ago, and was surprised to find out they’re part of a group that is the biggest music instrument retailer in Europe.
  23. A common feature of the 70s which I guess Squier have recreated here.
