1. I play active live, passive practice, gotta love that on/off switch...
2. Does anybody know any decent podcasts/blogs/vlogs (possible spelling of video blogs), I've already looked at Janek Gwidala's which is prity good but I was wondering if anyone on here any good ones, or posts these parcles of information themselves.
3. Marcus Miller Flea Victor Wooten Jaco Paul Chambers
4. Dunlop, Stubby 3mms or I picked up a load of different wooden ones, think they're like buigaba and other 'exotic wood's, which are quite nice
5. Again, thanks for the replies, can I just say that I realise that I am not currently the next Victor Wooten, I realise that I have a mountain to climb and I relise that the chances are that unless I am that one in a million, at some point fall off and hit my head on the way down, however I intend to pick my self up again and start over again and again. Oh by the way the people who have complemted me have mostly not taught me bass, mainly it was the head of guitar tution in Norfolk and my flute teacher who plays in Destination Swing and other bands. Oh and I'm partial too gingers and Guinness
6. Thank you to all of you who replyed, its clear to me that there are some reacurent themes knocking around on here and I will take this to heart. Quick question: does anyone have any suggestions about stuff to transcribe?, 'cause I've done a bit but not loads and I think staring off on something like Birdland, might be a tad ambitious.
7. Um, hello, this is hard for me to really get across well. I'm 15 and reliseing that playing bass is really what I want to do in life. I've been playing for less than three years but I'm like above grade 6 standard, I read sheet music (three days locked in my room), I'm playing in a band (how many 15 year old boys don't?), I'm playing in a jazz band (accredited by local big boys as the best ever school band they have heard), I'm playing scores for big bands and in a school production of Bugsy Malone and taking as many chance as I possibly can (which ain't many in rural Norfolk ). Oh I'm also taking theory lessons and DB lessons. (Blowing my own trumpet, described as 'highly gifted' and the 'best bass student I've taught') So anyway, it's really frustraiting 'cause I see all this insane bas players, more than a few of them preside on this here sight, and I go to myself how do they get there, I woodshed day in day out I listen to whatever the hell I can lay my hands on... So yeh, what I'm trying to say is that I want your help. I want to know where you learnt stuff like how to play over chord changes, how to construct walking bass lines, what to listen to and how to survive in the music industry. (Also if you live/have knoledge of the Norwich/South Norfolk music scene where I could get gigs or go see decent jazz stuff etc.) I know I'm over stepping the line putting all this stuff up here and expecting you to reply, but I'm coming through in the generation of tab and eighth notes, not transcribing and quavers, so please help, cause I want to be part of the future of bass and I don't want that future to be bland, dire infact, because so many other elements of music nowadays are. Thanks.
8. I say I'm a musican, then if asked what I play I say what ever the hell I can lay my hands on but that tends to be a bass guitar, by which time they've lost intrest.
9. street spirit (fade out) by radiohead
10. I think its gonna be a Cort Artisan series B4FL or sommin, so nothing special and I've got a mate who can set stuff you brilliantly, so it'll be probably be a low action.
11. Already loving this thread. Keep us informed.
12. Um, could I just ask, I'm getting enough money for Christmas to finally buy a fretless and I was wondering if people could give any suggestions for some strings for a good fretless sound. I'm kinda looking mainly for a jazzy, Jaco style tone but maybe a bit more lyrical but at the end of the day any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
13.
NO HIPPIES ON BASSCHAT
lolage
14. Love both basses but play a Fender Jaguar, which could start a whole new thread. Personally for me the more expensive Squire Ps or like the Duelux Ps are my favourite P-basses and my favourite Jazzes are either the Marcus Miller or MiMs (although 50th anniversary was a really beutiful) and again what ever vintage basses you stumble across range from shocking to like in your pants. Um for me, if I'm doing somthing where I'll be wandering around, really interacting with the band and the audience or just the audience if I'm on my lonesome its gotta be a Jazz type neck, pickups and tone, whereas if I'm sitting down and reading it's gonna be a P-bass. Just my opinion.
15. Can see MythSte is coming from with that thing about it not having as much substance as jazz but then to be brutal p-basses and jazzes feel like bloomin' bricks, in like a dependable way, u'know if its a fender of squire they're gonna be quality, and jags can lack that but the tone and the neck as well as weight and shape end up becoming familiar if you don't play any other basses for ages and when you do play any other basses, if your anything like me, you realise justhow amazing the jag actually is.
16. Yeh, here is my two cents worth, rock gig when your playing fingersyle and jumping around etc. anchor your thumb, it still allows in my opinion for a wide enough range of dynamics for the dynamics to have effect but just gives you that much more freedom to really 'get into' the music. If its a jazz gig or something where tone and dynamics will change greatley even from bar to bar, float it to allow that really soft piano part and forte part along with riffs, walking bass lines, high little runs, which is another goof thing anbout floating thumb, rampid movement from string to string, and like, whatevs. to really sing from your bass.
17. I'd love to come, where is it again and I'd rather not pay in advance.
18. thanx for the reasurance, maybe i might spend on here if i can't get anything locally..
19. See the main problem I have is that I don't shop over the internet, (various reasons including one very bad experience that will likley never be repeated) so showing me stuff on here is great but I really need to know brands and person experiences ect. thanks for the stuff put up and i'll consider second stuff thanx. Please keep putting stuff up.
20. Its new bit of gear time again and this time its the amp thats getting the shove of back of the truck onto the road that is the metaphore for my musical experience. So heres how it is my budget id up to around 400 quid although I will only go this far if I have to. I'm looking for something between 100 and 200 hundred watts. I'm currently looking at Ashdown as a real poss. but as I don't know an awful lot about whats out there amp wise I need some help. Also really looking for something new not second hand. So if you know nything please help!
21. +1 for Transcribe, truly excelent, although I do try to keep my ear in by transcribing some easier stuff by ear.
22. Had my first lesson recently, the county were kind enough to get one down to my school so I'm now semi hiring it. So far it hasn't been a doddle but God I'm pleased I took it up. The bass is a Stentor 1950 if your wondering, so not quite an amazing one butr beautiful in its own right. If you can advise me on something, anything please do.
