1. Cheers for the replies! I think I'll go with the Alesis USB Guitarlink cable. Maybe go for something a little more pricey like an interface in the near future cause I'm just getting started with all this. Cheers for your help chaps!
2. Hey chaps! I was messing around with a Bach 2 part invention, I have recorded it in Audacity using a 3.5mm jack lead with a converter for the bass. The recording quality sucks though even after a bit of editing. I will post it up here but bare in mind its a real rough recording (timing issues and hissing..) I want to know what you guys use to record bass onto a laptop/computer (software and hardware). I was thinking about getting a USB cable for my bass to laptop or maybe even some interface but I am a total newbie when it comes to all this stuff, let me know your thoughts!
3. Well I have decided to look around for other clinics closer to home (in and around Manchester), looks like i will have to go privately though cause the NHS may take too long, (I need the medical complete by beginning of December). Does anyone know of any places to try out in the North West?
4. Well there are based in New York and London so half and half I guess.
5. Thanks for all the responses guys. I still have time to cancel the outrageous medical appointment down in London. Just try to get in contact with the agency I'm with to sort out an alternative. When I'm looking back over the emails about the medicals it seems they have these "recommended" clinics where you can do the medical that are private and seem extortionate in price but I may be able to get one on the NHS so thats better news. I think it is a standard medical but it does seem very in depth, even testing for HIV etc.. But yeah should work out ok if I can get hold of the people and my agency and sort it out. The only thing that slightly worries me is when I told one of the guys about the £500 medical quote he said it wasn't that bad of a price quote! So I went ahead and booked, I'm just wondering if I can do it on the NHS why no one from that agency told me... Trying not to worry hah. Should be fine though, I still have time to cancel it..
6. Well i mean like the cruise line I will be working for (Carnival) have a list of clinics I can choose from do have a medical with. I can't just go to my local GP. I'm based in Manchester now and the nearest one is in Blackpool, but with me going down to London anyhow to get my Visa I thought I would tie the two in together.
7. Well they have set practices I guess some of the practitioners work with the cruise lines though, so I can't just go to my GP. But yeah £500, sucks..
8. So I finally got a cruise ship gig and I have been told that I have to have a medical (obviously). Its with Carnival and the have set medical practices that you have to go through and I've been quoted £450/500 pounds for mine at a place down in London. Carnival don't reimburse you for this just the visa. I thought this amount was a lot but the agency says its a decent quote, I have the appointment booked for Tuesday next week, if someone can tell me if this is a good/bad deal I will be very grateful! - Jack
9. Hey fellow BCters, I have joined a big band, well kind of if it all goes well. My reading is ok but I struggle with up tempo numbers with a lot of dots, can anyone help me to find either some big band charts/bass parts or like looads and looads of walking bass lines parts (straight walking without being loads of skip notes and such), I'm running out of material here!
10. I second "A train", have you thought about doing a bossa as well, like "Blue Bossa", "How Insensitive" or "Corcovado" could be nice..
11. So I just had another cruise ship audition, it went quite well this time hopefully I'll get something out of it. One of the only things I was unsure about was when he asked me to play a few basslines in various different latin styles. Like a Cha Cha groove, Rumba, Tango and a few others. I have studied jazz at Uni and we never got taught about this styles in depth. Now I'm in the real world, its time to wise up before I go on a cruise. Anyone got any pointers?
12. Hey guys, can anyone recommend me good websites to advertise bass lessons, (apart from this one obviously!) I'm just trying to get my name out there! Cheers.

14. Hey Ya'll, I'm a keen electric bass player currently living in North London, I'm fresh from Middlesex University where I studied jazz for 3 years. I play many styles Jazz, Funk, Pop, Disco, Reggae, Rock, Latin, Motown, etc.. I can read charts/dots to a good level, got my own equipment and am willing to travel. I'm available for dep work, theatre work, contracts for work abroad, function gigs, most things really try me! www.jackredford.com If interested, don't hesitate to contact me!
15. Hey y'all, I'm really interested in working in the pit as a musician in some theatre productions but I don't really know where to start as I've never done anything like this before. I just need to get out there and put my reading skills to the test, plus the money couldn't hurt right now! I'm trying to get my reading up for a cruise ship gig, so I'm frantically reading everyday to get my chops up. So yeah I'm looking for any gigs that will give my reading some practice, theatre, big band, whatever! Can any body give me any tips on how to start trying to get work in these fields? Any tips would be great!
16. So I was playing in a band rehearsal today at my uni when my lovely amp starting distorting really badly, the odd time when i am practicing it occurs when i really dig in.. But then its fine again.. I have a week full of gigs/recitals coming up and I'm really afraid that this could happen during one of them! Anyone else had a similar problem? I mean today I really thought the was something wrong as it was doing it on nearly every note! So I took it home to show a mate and then nothing it was fine again.. I carry it around with me in uni but I always try to take care of her.. I mean it.. Anyone shed any light on this problem? Cheers
17. Hey guys, does anyone know where you can buy individual strings? I broke my E string (Elite Flatwounds) and I want to buy another one, seems a bit silly to buy a new set of strings just to replace one you know... cheers!
18. Hey Chaps, I'm having a lot of fret buzz on my beautiful fender jazz bass. I'm living/studying in London and I wanted to take the bass to somewhere/someone who knows what there doing. I'm wondering if anyone here can tell me a good place to go or maybe knows a thing or two about how to fix fret buzz, I know very little about bass repair maybe people on here have a better idea! Cheers - Jack
19. Cheers guys, I've made a list of amps to try now, keep them coming if anyone has more suggestions!
20. Hello fellow Bass-chatters! I'm looking into purchasing a small combo suitable for jazz gigs/function gig, so something between 300W-500W right? Powerful but light.. I play a Fender 2006 MIA Jazz bass and want to capture the real sound of the instrument, I've been hearing stories about Mark Bass amps changing the organic sound of the instruments, and different things about Ampeg amps.. I don't really know what to go for, should I get a combo? Or a head then look for a small cab too? Also its quite hard to go and try some of these amps as there not in stock at my local music shops.. I've heard a lot good of things about AER Amp One combo amps.. But they are very expensive! My limit is £450, maybe I would stretch to £500 but I don't want to buy something without trying it really.. Any help would be much appreciated in my quest to finding a good solid bass amp!
21. Cheers Garry for your helpful contribution, I will check out Monks playing. Im getting a wealth of knowledge from all you guys, cheers! Keep it coming
22.
Speaking as someone who loves listening to this genre I don't think that the electric bass can always substitute effectively, not to my ears anyway.
Why does the electric try to substitute, doesn't it just add something different? But yeah i guess its down to taste.
23.
No matter how "bass ass" you think you are the opinions of the guys giving you work will count for a lot. If you are going to play Jazz and make a living at bass playing you should be as flexible and complete a player as you can be. Playing upright bass would open doors and be a significant earner for you. Martin Drew had to drop Laurence Cottle from his band on certain gigs because he didn't play upright bass. Good luck to you, but, to be clear, this decision has restricted your opportunities as a working musician.
I know man, your right, I just can't get into upright though. I'm not just looking for jazz gigs tho so I think I will be ok.
24.
just to be clear... you're not ruling out what upright players contribute to the genre right???
No man, i love upright but I wanna hear some electric players do there thing as all I have heard are upright players in the past few years.
25.
Jeff Berlin and Laurence Cottle are the first two guys I think of with regards to jazz players on electric bass....they both swing like crazy. There's players like Janek Gwizdala too, although he doesn't,by his own admission, really play any straight ahead jazz
Cool have you got any albums you could reccomend of Berlin and Cottle?
