Ah, noice! Hope you enjoy it! I keep hanging my nose over them, but never have a use-case for one. I'd be interested to hear how you go on with it.

Same year as my mapleglo. Should sound like a dream and play really well if it's half as good. Do enjoy.

  3. Do i NEED the rickenbacker 4003 ive seen online and cant stop thinking about?!?

Think of how your life might be in world like you have seen...

  4. If im looking at an old 70's valve amp and it doesnt have a DI Out im sure ive read somewhere you can get a stand alone DI that goes in between the speaker out lead and the cab or am i completely making that up?

    1. Dood

      Dood

Yup, not in series with the cabinet, but can be connected in parallel or daisy chained with the cabinet. There's several on the market and, even Darkglass' Element pedal can be used as one (up to 100W) - meaning that you can even install a cabinet emulation (along with EQ and a whole host of other parameters) post amp to then feed off to your recording device or PA system. It's not a dummy load though, so this one will still need a cabinet attached. Dummy loads do exist too, I reviewed the Sequis Element: https://www.bassgearmag.com/bassic-review-sequis-motherload-elemental/   and Darkglass Element a while back:

I've used a Palmer "The Junction" PDI 09 for years for this and have had good results. Really does sound like a mic'd amp IMO and one gets the power tube character in addition the the preamp tone. Solid piece and I like that it's passive. It does have several attenuation settings and ground lift, if needed. As with the Darkglass (have not used it but would like to try it) it's limited to 100w (I've used with '64 Dynacord Bass-King and Ashdown Little Stubby). As Dood says, it still has to be used with a cab as it does not have power soak/dummy load function (Palmer and many others make those).

      Suburban Man

      I've used one of these:

      https://www.canford.co.uk/Products/21250/20-031_EMO-E520-DI-BOX-Passive-1-channel-with-earth-lift

Rock solid construction, but absolutely no frills, amp sims or anything

  5. Anyone here snag that EBS T90 valve amp that was on ebay recently? Fingered hovered over the BIN button several times!

  6. Incoming - Schecter Model P bass as backup to my P in the busy gigging period up to christmas

  7. Finally bagged an Ashdown LB 30, cant wait to get back to an all valve rig

      BassTractor

Congrats! Of all the amps I've sold, including many name amps, the LB 30 is the one I really, really miss. I think you may be in Heaven.

  8. Time to simplify my set up.  No more pedals (except a tuner), no more pre amps, no more compressors, no more drive.... just a p bass, valves and cab

      Reggaebass

Pretty much how I’ve always been with a P or jazz bass, I did dabble with a few pedals but they didn’t do much for me and I spent more time fiddling around with them than playing 😁, good luck pow

      Pow_22

@Reggaebass that's exactly it, I need to stop knob twiddling (ooooh matron) and just play the damn thing

  9. The early Italian Markbass R500s - are they class D or class A/B?  Mixed messages online from they ARE class D, they ARENT class D to early ones weren't but later ones are!?!?!

    1. Dood

      Dood

I can think of a couple of Markbass models that transitioned from A/B to D Class and the interwebz suggests that happened around 2012, so I wouldn't rule out that if the R500 was in production then it *could* have been included. Again the internet suggests that R500 production ended by 2012, I'd wonder if it remained A/B until being phased out.

    2. Dood

      Dood

Oh and, if it's an early R500, then yes it will have been A/B. - The manual describes the power section as 'analog' which is typical of describing A/B class and for a 500W amp, it's heavier than it's D Class variants, so, all in all, I think it's probably safe to assume an early model is A/B. Lifting the lid on it will also prove it.

  10. Anyone recommended an attenuator for the DI on an Orange Bass Terror?  I believe the one i need is -40db to fix the 'Hot DI' isues?

  11. Bought a B stock Vintera II P bass recently in a lovely burst/tort/slab rosewood but after being a Jazz bass player for so long I'm really struggling with the neck. Maybe time to sell and go for a Hama Okomoto P Bass!

  12. Are we allowed to discuss rickenbackers on this forum now?  Ive seen a used vintage one but have a few concerns id like to run by someone more experienced than me

  13. Latest GAS - EBS T90 valve head!

  14. Todays GAS brought to you in association with AngryWife.com - Vintera II P bass in sunburst

  19. Getting really quite bad GAS for a fireglo Ric bass.  Never really played one and dont know where this latest want has come from!?!

    1. prowla

      prowla

Rics are the best basses money can buy, so that's reason enough!

There can be variations in instruments, so it's a good idea to try one or two and see how you like them.

    2. hill76

      hill76

2006 on they have the push/pull pot for vintage sound, and adjustable pole pieces. Earlier Ricks have slimmer necks. Although my experience is limited to the three 4003 Ricks I've owned :)

Who knows where GAS comes from? But it does always seem to strike.... at some point.
As mentioned above, try a couple if you can. There are always a few on eBay, and some on here too. Keep an eye out for next time one comes up near you, or ask a friendly nearby fellow BC member if you can try theirs? Rics have their fans and their detractors - but a good one is a great bass.

  20. Never really got on with Barefaced cabs but a gen1 Compact has come up locally...hmmmm....

what ive tried so far i didnt like.  A few of their 12's and the two ten.  All seem honky, bitey and a bit brash/brittle.  Ive never tried their 15s and the amount of fans on here suggests it may be user error rather than poor cabs

  21. Mosfet Bass Drive incoming.  Looking for an 'always on' gritty tone rather than distortion so could be interesting!

  22. Anyone know how to get a previously locked for sale thread re-opened?  I withdrew my P bass but something has come up that means i want to advertise it again

  25. Took my Orange Terror Bass MK1 to rehearsal last night to be met with the studios in house Ampeg fridge.  Excitedly plugged in.......pure mud :(  Ordered some rounds to help (this band doesnt suit my usual flats) and may look at valve changes in the OBT.  Very disappointed

    1. markbunney

      markbunney

I had the original MK1 amp for around 12 years, then all of a sudden I stopped liking the sound of it. It also sounded very muddy, even with new strings, treble turned up etc etc. Not sure if the amp had changed, or just my ears/tastes changed but I ended up selling it.

I then ordered one of the new MK2 amps, and I didn't like that either so it went back.

I still have the SP212 cab, but bought an Alpha Omega 500 head to go with it

    2. gjones

      gjones

Those amps are not flat with the knobs all at mid point. Try putting the bass at zero and the mid at max, then add bass and treble until it sounds decent.

I use one of these at a venue I play at regularly and I have to boost the mids and take the bass down to zero to get a usable sound onstage.
