  1. Merry Christmas to BassChat (and to my FaceBook bass pals who may have wondered where I am: I quit FB a few weeks ago). Enjoy!

Happy Christmas Clarky.  Now I know why I haven’t seen any Pablo pics on FB!

  2. Oh man another bass with issues😡 .  Frets are tarnished, I gave them a vigorous wiping with a damp cloth to see if it would come off and no joy, I am reluctant to order the 1200 grit and start working on the frets on a new bass in case I bodge it

Get yourself the Dunlop fret polishing cloth, works a treat for a fiver.  Mask off the fingerboard with masking tape and away you go.

Thanks for that @umcoo, slightly reassuring to hear.  It's now been 7 days without a change of location, so fingers crossed something happens soon!

Thanks.  Yes I'm sure it'll get to me at some point, it's just frustrating that it hasn't moved at all since Saturday.

      Oh and it's actually a compressor ;)

  9. So glad I'm back with a Demeter amp again.  Such a wonderfully clear, warm tone.  Impossible to get a bad sound from it.

It's not the most tweak-friendly location, for sure....

Someone had turned the trim pot right down in the amp I've just got.  Like @owen, it was a scary moment when I first fired it up and it was really quiet!  Now I've re-set it all is very good!!

Don't be so harsh on yourself Sir!  Might have been a tad too clean sounding for you though?

I went with the used Bass 400 that was at Bass Direct.

  13. My band is learning "It's my life" by Talk Talk, so I've re-learnt it some 36 years after I originally learned to play it :)

Surprisingly, not that much.  It was mainly the little runs that connect each section.  Such a great song to play on fretless.

  14. Looking to buy a cheap hard bass case for shipping.

  15. Big, big shout out to @MoJoKe for his very kind help last week. Top geezer :drinks:

  16. Well, that's it. Converted to tapewound strings 😁. So smooth but still with bite.

Ooh what have you gone for?  I use La Bella white nylons and love them.

  17. Hi guys. Quick question about capo for bass. I need something to hold the strings on the first fret so I can measure relief during bass setups. That's all. Simple "holder". Any thoughts and advices? What should I buy to get a solid capo with bass? I always use my left hand and right arm to press strings to the last fret but it's always a pain in the a** to get good and easy measurements. Thanks in advance.

Just make sure you get the correct radius on the capo otherwise you won't have even pressure on the strings.

  18. What's up with the bass on KT Tunstall's one day from her acoustic extravaganza? Sounds great, but what a snarl?

    1. franzbassist

      franzbassist

It sounds like a typical double bass to me.  No effects as such, just someone digging in and getting that growl off the fingerboard.

  20. Uh-oh. I’ve decided I want to start experimenting with different preamp valves in my Spyder 550. Down the rabbit hole I go.....

Some old Mullards are good in the 550.  I also really liked the American GE or Sylvania JAN-spec, rugged as hell and sound very good.

  21. Uh-oh, sent an email about a bass! 🙈

  22. It's such a small thing, but I really want to put black knobs on my VM 70's Jazz. The chromed ones are nice, but there's something about those black plastic ones!

  23. Ed Sheeran now has his own guitar brand. Interesting approach from Lowden (?!) there....

  24. Sliced the median nerve in my middle finger over Christmas.  Totally numb down one side.  Feels weird :(

Things have settled down a bit now.  Playing the bass is fine, no issues at all, but holding a fork or a mug feels weird, or rather doesn't feel at all :(
