  1. Rebuilding my pedalboard tonight.  Downsizing a bit.

I would agree Rich, for the last three decades I never used pedals.  It's only by playing in a band that does a lot of 80s covers that some effects have been appropriate.

  2. Is it wrong to be proud of the fact I made my drummer physically sick with the high SPL of my Trace Elliot TE1200 + Barefaced Super Twin rig? 😲

  3. Okay, which one of you bought the FGN Jazz in Andertons last night?  I was literally checking out with it in my basket at the same time! 🤣

  4. I'm very pleased to announce that I am now endorsing/an endorsing artist for La Bella Strings!

Well done, but how did you manage to swing that as it's quite the endorsement?

It actually looks really good.  I didn't realise that level of personalisation was allowed.

Cool.  Funnily enough I saw BA55 WOW on the way in to work today.

  7. Is anyone a La Bella string user AND use their extra-long 5 string nickel sets?

    Long shot I know 😅

Are you looking for a set Si, or just curious about them?

  8. A first for me. Made myself 2 new instrument cables. Not the greatest of soldering but tidy enough for OCD 😆 I'm quite chuffed.

Excellent!  I taught myself to do it during the first lockdown and found it most satisfying.  Since then I've done a couple of full wiring installs to my basses, made up a load of custom patch leads for my pedal board, and changed the plugs on a couple of leads.  Great fun, and the more you do it the better you get (and quikcly too)!

  9. Just completed my first pickup and active preamp install. Pretty chuffed with myself :)

I should have taken pictures as I went!

I dropped Bartolini MK6CBC pickups and HR 5.4AP/918 preamp into a Cort SCMS.  Quite a considerable upgrade to my ears, as it now has active/passive switching and also three way mid selector switch.

Once the original electrics were stripped out I added two coats of conductive paint as the (single) original coat was not applied very well.  Made sure I had continuity between the pickup and preamp cavities and away I went.

Everything went in nice and easy, although there wasn't a lot of room and some of the wires were very thin so soldering was a challenge in places.  It looks a bit of a mess from the picture below, but it's all in and working which is the most important thing.

  10. Given that the year is of sentimental meaning to him, do I tell my Managing Director that the 1972 Precision he thinks he has, has actually got a 74 neck and 73 pots?🙄

      franzbassist

Ah I see.  Well probably best to leave him blissfully ignorant then!

  12. Getting nervous about this fuel shortage/non-shortage. Whole band is supposed to be driving up to Scotland from London on Friday, returning Monday and really don't fancy running out halfway there...

I had to drive to York from Hampshire on Saturday.  My car has good range on a full tank, but we knew we'd need a top up to get back.  We checked the situation in every garage we passed on the A34, M40, M42/A42 and M1 and nowhere had fuel.  We lucked into a garage having fuel delivered just as we got to York, but other than that there was nothing.

  13. Good lord, how expensive are Mim Fenders now!! Nearly £700 for an Mim p bass!! I remember when you could get one for £300ish new

    1. franzbassist

      franzbassist

They're also much better basses now than they used to be, so add that into the mix too.

  14. Assuming you wanted the bass, would you buy a 5 string that weighed 10.4lbs?

    1. franzbassist

      franzbassist

Agree with Nick 100%.  Anything over 9lbs for gigging with is too much these days.

I feel the same about my Boss MS-3.  Terrific piece of kit and great fun trying out new sounds.  Will be great when I finally get back out gigging.

Spent more time fettling this afternoon.  Flipped the string over (the ball end is locked in place in the ETS bridge system) and it seems to have done the trick.  Fingers crossed!

      Thanks guys.

It's a taper core La Bella white nylon, which have been my standard string on all basses for ages.

Yes, tried the witness point trick, taken it off and refitted it, nut slot and zero fret checked.

      Very frustrating!

Great strings at a good price, and a nice tension too.

The regular nickel set (i.e. not the super brights) has a non-tapered 130.

I feel your pain Rich, literally, having had the same issue about ten years ago.  Hope you get it sorted soon.

Looks like a resurrection of Stephan Koesters' now defunkt Wal database.  It'd be good to have it back up and running and updated on a regular basis.
