Blimey, 10 years already? Was thinking about him only the other day on a thread on here.

  3. A chance look at a frankenfender bass farcebook group now has me toying with the idea of making a 30" scale bass from a short scale neck and a Tele guitar body...

Bit more than a bumper, alas. :(  The bollard was alongside.

I was thinking about making a gag out of that but it's past time I showed some sympathy.

I've been caught with coloured matched bollards that look to be part of the fence two feet behind.  Got no sympathy from the establishment that had them painted that way.  Daft.

      Feeling for you.

  5. And so, after 10 years as a covers-only unit, we're reinventing ourselves as an originals band. God help us.

I play in several bands, from tributes, to covers, to originals. There is always room for both, but perhaps less room for the original stuff, sadly.....
Though in fairness, I've played quite a few venues where they either like, want or tolerate original material - and those venues and crowds ARE out there. Trick is, finding them, together with appealing to the masses who want covers..... and winning them over.
A few covers, to get people singing & humming along, and tapping their feet or dancing, is no bad thing and handy to have in your repertoire.
Perhaps what you're really tired of, is the same covers or the same genres of covers? Seek out interesting / different covers and try a few :)

We've considered replacing the set, but TBH we've done the covers thing for 10 years (our first gig was the 7th Feb 2008, I still have the set list) and want to do something completely different. And Tammy's songs are too good to keep hidden. We will pop 2 or 3 covers in there too, I expect. :)

Happened with my band - not 10 years, but a couple of years doing the Blues pub circuit, couple of new young members, written a whole load of songs and now going out in November on a 9 date national tour.  Good luck!

  6. Another gig bites the dust, and this one hurts... the One Love Festival in Kent, in August. Absolutely gutted. I was really looking forward to this one.

    1. Old Horse Murphy

      Old Horse Murphy

I feel your pain Rich, we've lost three festivals too. A brand new band for me as well.

I would say it gives me longer to learn the set but in reality, all it does is delay the inevitable last minute cramming and busking to a bit later in the year.

  7. Another lockdown tweak done... added a HF tweeter and crossover to my wee Behringer 60w 1x12 rehearsal combo. Mud, begone! :D

  8. Anybody ever had difficulty getting a reply from DR Strings? Sent them three emails so far and not heard a dickybird. Not tremendously impressed.

My first contact with them was in early November, via the Contact Us on the website... emailed them directly on the 4th of this month and again last week. Nothing.

Story has a happy ending; I emailed Lord Of The Strings earlier, from whom I bought the strings, and they have just replied to say that they've put a replacement string in the post. A 90 minute turnaround, now that's proper customer service, and the reason why I shall be buying from them again in the future. But I've bought my last set of DRs.

  13. DR Black Beauties have arrived and are now on the SkaJazz. OHMYGODTHEYLOOKAMAZING. Pics later. 😎

As an aside... superb service from Lord Of The Strings. I'll definitely be using them again.

I feel for you sleep-deprived guys. I well remember those days.

In my case it's not that I'm deprived.  I get 'nuff winks through the course of the 24hr clock.  It's just not all joined up.  If I had to keep a job going too I'd be stuffed.

I've enjoyed hanging out in the marketplace (stop tittering Teebs) for the object of my desire too.  Both times I have been lucky to get the item when it turns up.  It helps that I am never off this forum of course.

  17. First hangover in about 10 years.

What a mix, yes you were asking for it.  We've all been there I'm sure.

Dioralyte is your friend, especially if you remember to drink it before going to bed.

  18. Fresh set of batteries in the Shuker, because (I can barely believe I'm saying this) I've actually got a full band rehearsal tomorrow :D

I'm starting week 5 of 'furlough' - use the time do do things for you and your family (this does not include murdering them! :D).

You may never get another chance like this. :)

Sorry to hear the Rich. I'm hoping it's not too inconvenient for you or leaves you financially out of pocket.

I hope too that you're able to use the time to do things you'd been wanting to do for a while.

  20. Great gig on Saturday night, only tempered by the fact that by the time I got home my favourite kebab emporium was closed. Gutted, I really fancied one of their large chicken/doner combos. Went to bed with a rumbly tumbly and thoughts of what might have been. Cue the nano-violins.

Brutal, that's happened to me before.  You did the right thing though, straight to bed rather than whatever's in the fridge and some flat coke!

  22. Here's a tip from your Uncle Rich. When you're beta-testing a design package and you think the auto-save is set, make sure it is. That way, you won't lose the last 5 hours' hard graft when it crashes. >:(>:(

I owned a Fender Musicmaster bass years ago and got rid of it after about 3 years, I got it for £75 which admittedly was a bargain but the bass itself was dreadful, it must have weighed about 14ibs, had one of those dreadful two saddle bridges, the cheapest pickguard and the only way i can think of describing the tone is "murky" it had very little high end and strangely not much low end but it seemed to have a lot of the muddier mid frequencies, the tone control did almost nothing.  Now on Ebay there are Musicmasters going for nearly 1.5k !!! Insane amount of money when you can get a Mexican Mustang bass which is a much better bass for under £600
