  1. Did somebody say black/black/maple?
  2. To leave a reliable amount of headroom to adjust on the fly. I set my volume for the room/stage at the amp. If my bass is turned fully up theres nowhere to go if need more, and I hate turning around and fiddling with an amp mid set or song. With the 80% setting, I know exactly how much more I've got in reserve. An active switch can be handy too in the same respect if you need different sound setting or a change of levels mid set or mid song without dial fiddling.
  3. Active for live, passive for recording I guess. Though I don't have an active bass right at the moment, in the past I gigged with them but I've not been on the wrong end of a stage for five years now. I prefer simplicity these days. Iv'e two Ps a Jazz and a Yamaha beater bass. I generally play the P bass at mid tone with vol at 80% and rarely deviate much. I'm recording at a good studio in about two weeks, I might have something to add to this after that lol.
  4. The list is pretty good really, that 3-4 hundred I'd be looking at Classic Vibe Squier, Yam Broad Bass, Marcus Miller if you like a slimmer width at the nut. G&L were suggested and theyre right in that price range, I'd probs lean towards one of those. Classic Vibes are great and you'll easily find one that suits your style. I will say, I just recieved an affinity today and I'm surprised how cheap it feels. I'd never played one before and the neck feels like raw wood, theres flex in it, Its a PJ and the Jazz pickup might as well not be there, its so weak. I bought it as a modding platform, but I wouldnt recommend it, the CV is light years ahead. I'm contemplating sending it back but as its a project bass, I'll be changing the neck, tuners, bridge, nut right away, and might swap out pots and pickup down the line a bit. Used, i have a perfectly good Yamaha RBX270 that was under a hundred quid on ebay, and 400 should find you a decent mexican Fender in the classifieds. I had a little look at one that went unsold at 400 on ebay last few days. Theres one for sale near me at 450 that looks good. I paid 400 for my MIM P-bass and that came with a hard case and a practice amp. Did need a full setup though.
  5. lol Hey bass buds. Intro here, just thought i'd drop in and actually sign up here rather than lurking and reading, so get ready for my "contributions" and i'll just take this opportunity to apologise in advance. So... playing since i was a teen, mid 40s now with a lot of on and off time in between. Bit newer to the bass than the guitar. I guess i'm a fender dude, dont really want to put a label on myself, but I do love a P-bass. Main a Black and maple P-Bass a-la Roger Waters if you need an image. I'm in British and live in Scotland now, but I've lived abroad most of my adult life. I was a touring backline tech and later tour manager for about 15 years, I play in a Hard Rock band thats sort of in the Megadeth to Corrosion of Conformity level of heavy. So Aloha and im looking forwards to meeting you all.
