  1. Bought new for the princely sum of £166, I bought this to experiment with recording sone heavy music this year.

It’s a 30” Baritone and came strung and setup in B standard (BEADF#B), but I’ve currently got it in drop A, so just dropping that low string a tone.

The whole guitar is extremely impressive for the money, sure the fretboard isn’t rolled, and the tuners are a bit cheap, but as a basic instrument, not least a platform for upgrading if it does what I need, it’s quite brilliant.

Worst case, I bail on the guitar thing and string it like a bass VI.

  2. Hey all,

This is the original prototype for the production Knightfall 66 pedal, which I ordered as a custom order prior to the design (mainly controls) being slightly tweaked, and put into production.

Drop me a PM and I can show you more info about how it was born.

So this is a two-channel Knightfall 66, with global controls for blend, bass (low) and High (treble), then per-channel controls for gain and volume.

Left switch is for switching between channels, right switch is for on/bypass.

The knobs have been changed by me shortly after I received the pedal so that each channel (blue/red) relates to the LED colour for the A/B foot switch.

In addition (I don’t believe the production Knightfall 66’s had this), there are multiple diode options available per channel.
The interior diode clipping switch (see image) is numbered 1-10, with the options as follows:

    1: Ch2 - MOSFET

    2: Ch2 - LED

    3: Ch2 - Ge

    4: Ch2 - 1N4001

    5: Ch2 - Si

    6: Ch1 - Si

    7: Ch1 - 1N4001

    8: Ch1 - Ge

    9: Ch1 - LED

    10: Ch1 - MOSFET

There is also a trimmer inside the pedal, this controls the maximum clean volume when the pedal is engaged. The treble is rolled off the clean channel above around 3kHz to allow for better integration with the distortion, so you may feel you want to bump the clean volume up if there's a perceived volume drop.

With regards the external control, the Low (Bass) knob adjusts the corner frequency of the first opamp stage, and as a result adjusts how much low-end will be clipped. To the left is tight and thin, and as you roll it round to the right you will loosen things up and saturate more bass. All the way to the right and you're in fuzz territory. I have found between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock yields the most usable results, though this varies with taste and the position of the blend knob.

All the other controls are as per the standard Knightfall (v1):

High (Treble) is a passive adjustable LPF, with "blanket over your cab" setting at the left, all the way round to "ice pick in my ear" on the right.

Gain and Volume are obviously self-explanatory. You'll get different levels with the different diodes (Ge and LED being the opposite ends of the spectrum in this regard)

Cash is king for this rarity, however would consider a Sire P5-5 in part exchange pending the colour, white being the preference.

    Cheers

    Si

Sorry I’m late to the party, I’d have asked if the EBS Runsten is suitable, I’ve one sat here I’m about to review and it promises much. I think it might even power the Quad Cortex using doubler cables and the like.

The EBS looks maybe twice as big as I had space for, luckily the Gigrig stuff has nailed it!

I had a 5-string Jerry Scheff a few years back. Very pretty and lovely to play, but the pickups were thin sounding to my ears, even with the assistance of the preamp, so I moved it on. Like you experienced, it took a while to sell.

They’re a very specific flavour of bass, not overly popular I guess (hence the relatively few numbers), but a very dedicated fan club on TB.

I see a Jeff Scheff 4 string appeared on the UK bass player market on FB.

Decent price seeing as they’re fairly rare. Shame that the aftermarket scratchplate is screwed on, would look better in its original state without one.

    Cracking colour!

… out of interest what is your favoured one?

Well the bottom-left is my ‘Main’ board, in that it gets used in the band I typically have the most gigs with.

Bottom right was meant to be a smaller approximation of that board…for when I need to take less gear…but only really gets about 70% there tonally, still nice though.

The Enabler board I just put together because they were bits I had lying around, but it turned out to be a really nice ‘clean’ board, ie no drive, that I typically use with Jocee.

The top left board is definitely the most ‘fun’, so much drive and dirt, no band for that at the moment, but I’m working on it.

The HX Stomp board is essentially just a backup to everything, because why not, I have approximations of each board programmed into it.

    So favoured?

Functionally it would be the ‘main’ board…. But my heart says the drive board. Who doesn’t enjoy stacking 3 dirt pedals into a Sansamp? 🤪

That's actually an excellent point. Really is good to talk 😂🤔 So you're saying the Fender S-1 is technically possible on a Lakland? That would be my preferred choice.

    Yea, in theory.

Although now I’m looking again (it was quite a while ago I checked), I can’t see any of the S1 Jazz Knobs available, so the pots are kinda useless without those.
I should have grabbed the couple I saw on eBay last year.

It really is an excellent feature for Jazzes. Is your switch a mini toggle or? The Fender S-1 switch I particularly liked due to the unobtrusive nature of it.

I’m going for a toggle as I’d prefer that to a push/pull pot (the out position is not elegant IMO). I did look into buying a Fender S1 pot and switch, but by the time I’d get it to Lakland, it would have been like £50 all in. I’ll stick with a toggle switch haha.

Absolutely mate and I wasn't trying to misquote you 👍 I once had a from new American Standard Jazz Bass V and really liked it. However I find the DJ5 better in every aspect apart from maybe the weight of my particular example will bother some.

Oh I completely agree, Lakland Skylines beat Fender all day every day IMO.

I've tried one of those fine models but in my opinion the B string would lose in a battle with a Lakland one. Only my experience however. Lakland is also hard to take out the equation if low action is your thing and prefer the J sound over a P. Personally I would stick with the DJ5.

Oh I didn’t say the Yammy would automatically win, just that it would be a harder choice. I had a DJ 5 for a while, it was awesome, only really lost out to my 55-01 because that is just ‘MY’ 5 string…know what I mean. But the DJ4 I had was the best Jazz bass I’ve ever owned….wish I still had it. Only sold it to help fund my US 44-PJ.
