Play as many as you can, you'll find a good one eventually. 2. Don't buy a new one. That's just throwing money away. 3. Don't pay more than £500. If you're that rich get a Lakland! IMO of course!!
Would normally agree to rule 2, but I did buy a new MIM P bass this year, really wanted the colour and board choice and could not find it 2nd hand I am however very happy with it still and believe it will never be sold, (unlike everything else I have owned over the years) Having said that I am looking for another Jazz, and wont be buying another new one, just really wanted that Pbass spec.
2. Does anyone with a "new" road worn bass worry about chipping or scratching it?
3. Hi, I have a SWR workingmans 15" combo, I brought it new from the basscentre around 1997 Someone in my village has been borrowing it regularly, it makes sense to sell it to him, but I do not wish to rip him off or undersell it either Does anyone know what a fair price for it would be? Thanks for any help, and I trust its ok to ask this here?
4.
Im glad you like the Orange cabs. If you feed them with a tube amp, or something with a quality tube-pre, you will love them even more.
I am keeping my MB head in mint condition with the idea of trading it when the tiny terror comes out In the meantime if a Ad200 comes up at the right price
5. I wonder what the prices the shops are picking these basses up for? And where are they coming from, I am still waiting to find one in an attic
6. I got back into gigging this year so missed the introduction of lightweight gear, when I went to buy a new rig the shop suggested mark bass gear. I was'nt ready for it, and thought, because I now am only playing covers in pubs etc, I would'nt need a decent rig, so I brought an ashdown mag setup which after 1 gig I was unhappy with so I traded it for a mark bass head I then borrowed a Zoot 212 lightweight Cab, and was not happy with that either, it just lacked something Under pressure to continue to gig, I brought 2 orange cabs, which I knew would be fantastic, but they are heavy The 410 stays at practice room and 115 goes most other places Both cabs together are overkill volume wise, but they do together produce an amazing tone and punch that sits well from all angles (I lent it to another band one night and was very impressed when wondering around the venue) So I guess I really need a barefaced cab based on what I have read here, happy to be talked into one, but it would have to sound as good as the heavy gear i currently have I may lose a bit of cash on this journey, but hope soon I will have a rig that I will be very pleased with and will see me through latter life!

What bass

As others have said, a Jazz bass would give you alot, I sold one this year, and now seek to replace it Alot of indie bands I have seen since the early 90s have used jazz basses, and get some great bright punchy tones There are also alot of indie type bands using P basses (a the risk of being disagreed with, the Cribs bass player uses a P bass to great effect, very simple lines) I have recently brought a Ric, I love it, its special, but If I were just to have one bass only, it would'nt be a Ric
8. After gigging mine a hand full of times and reading various stuff here (&there), and knowing a few others who gig, and record live from them, I am beginning to wonder if there anyone who uses one who does anything way off centre with the EQ? If so ...... Roughly what setting do you use? Do you change settings during a set for different songs etc? What music are you doing? What bass and cab (or other effects) do you use the LMII with?
9. Just wondering who would really buy this (a investing collector, a rich musician?), I have no clue to the worth or market for such an instrument I know I have had some strange gear choices over the years, but would this really interest anyone? 10. Just enlarged the pic to check out your basses, your house looks like mine, loads of toys and instruments!
11. Just out of interest, whats the weight of these things?
12.
i have been looking at getting a fender deluxe active jazz bass (mexican) as i think there great value for money http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/fender-jazz-bass/547 however i was wondering if there was any other basses that anyone has played who thinks they are better??
As someone states above, the cost of fenders is a topical debate, but I must state I am very happy with a MIM P bass I brought new this year I knew there where other basses around and under the same mark, that would do the same job, but I did get exactly what I wanted (including the colour and fret board), which I could not find 2nd hand So I would say, it may be a a little over priced, I am also sure there will be many who answer your question with yes a ______ bass is better, but if it really what you want, I am sure you will still be happy with it in a years time
13.
Get a good luthier to replace the screw and wait until the guitarist turns around on a small stage and clatters the bass!!
ha, yes I played my new toy at a gig the other week and found myself moving the guitarists mic away from mine to avoid sword fighting with my perfect bass
14. I have a Fender MIM P bass maple neck with lake placid blue body, I love the look and how comfortable it is I recently brought a Maple Ric, which I have wanted since I was a boy (in the 70s!) and although I gigged it for the first time recently and loved it, somehow it has made me appreciate the Fender more I am not keen on modern looking basses, 5 strings or actives (although it would come in handy in the covers band as sometimes key changes leave me no where to go if trying to copy the original bass lines) I did own a 5 string in the 90s as I was commanded to use one by the band leader, some horrible purple colored thing So sorry to be boring but my desert island bass would be a simple P or J

16. oh, and cant wait till tomorrow as its the first gig for the Ric !
17.
and the fact that any famous Ric player through history has only really played them as a passing fad (McCartney, Roger Waters, Geddy Lee etc etc) leads me to finally believe that they really are not special and are now shockingly over-priced for what you actually get (even one that has managed to escape the factory relatively defect-free).
Im not sure you could call McCartneys use of his Ric as a passing fad Anyway, just brought a maple glo 4003 of a nice bloke on this forum I am finding it very very alien to my P bass, the lack of shape on the body where I rest me forearm to finger play is the main issue, causing me to put the weight of my arm through my thumb on top of the pick guard rather than through my forearm onto the body. I guess its like the P bass is easier to play lazy The neck is also much fatter than I expected, but I have no issue with this I really love the tone, and tone/pickup control I am getting used to the different approach required to play it Problem now is because they are so different, I love both the Ric and my P bass, and will have conflict in which one I want to play for every practice/gig (yes life is good if I have time to worry about such silly things) Only time will tell I guess if its a passing fad or not, but for now Ive always wanted one, and am finally enjoying ownership
18. I just brought a maple ric 4003 from a nice bloke on this forum, i guess as far as this thread is concerned it is an expensive bass Why did I buy it? I only play in pub covers bands, could easily do that with a squire Well Ive wanted a maple ric since I knew what a guitar was (reasons why would bore), and I am 40 now, so as someone else said, a treat for hundreds or hours of hard graft, I have no interest in sports cars or other expensive hobbies If I look after it (choose which gigs carefully that i take it too!) Id guess I could get my money back if I needed to, so its a cash asset Will see its first gig on saturday night, did a band practice on it last night and really loved the tone (didnt really get a chance to mess around with the settings either) Strange though, now I wish I could play my P bass and the ric at the same time as I love them both, but I still have problems with one at a time!
19. I gigged for around a year (pub circuit stuff) in the early 90s with an old fender guitar amp combo, it sounded great and very loud but I cant explain why cause amp tech aint my thing
20. Hi If you could fwd a number then I will call to discuss Cheers Shaun
21. I am running a 500w MB head through orange cabs, only play pub gardens/halls etc, I dont need all the volume at all, but find I do need the set up to get a good tone and punch at lower settings as I have borrowed smaller lighter cabs and ran lower powered heads, but it did provide what I was craving I am sure the tech experts will explain an easier way of doing this, but it works for me at the mo
22. Sounds like you had a great trip I am still running a LMB head with my orange cabs and waiting for the day I can trade it in for a tiny terror, I am making massive efforts to keep the MB as new so I can get the best trade in for it Would you know how the terror compares to the Little mark clean Also the MB does provide a good punch through the orange, even when not playing to loud, I assume the terror will equal or better this?
23. been looking for a maple off an on for a while, same its not one! anyway, from the ones I have tracked since looking this price seems spot on for a private sale, you can pay loads more bump ........
24.
Thank f*** for that.
glad your glad
