  1. I love them. Samuel Herring means every word he says, you can see that in their live performances. The album “Singles” is a modern masterpiece but they’ve yet to better it. “The Far Field” comes close, and the new one “As Long As You Are” is very laid back. My fear for them is that they’re in danger of getting stuck with one sound. I’d like to see them stretch out a bit with something  a little different.
For a similar vibe but less synth-y, try The War On Drugs. 😊

Is it relevant? We shouldn't be classifying people by their gender, colour or sexuality anyway should we? Far better to classify them by whether they're nice, decent, people, or not.

Those 5 string players are weird though, am I right?

    :D

You're talking about this fairly regular, rounded off body shape like it's a BC Rich Warlock or something!

I wouldn't bat an eyelid at this bass turning up at any gig regardless of the genre because it's pretty conventional but modern to my eyes.  Is it the name that bothers you enough to pigeonhole it?  Is it the slightly gothic/churchy inlays?  Genuinely interested to know where other people's lines are drawn on these things.

I agree. The headstock is slightly "metal", but it's the body shape that I really like. I quite like the inlays and I'm a total sucker for anything with binding. IMO Schecter should make it with their 4 in a row headstock that adorns their P and J models.

    Nottingham:

Stereo MCs (posh boys from Ruddington)

Tindersticks (an amalgamation of two far more interesting bands)

Both bands had to move away from Nottingham and all but deny any connection with the place before they became successful.

There's also been a series of one-hit wonders, novelty acts and minor indie bands none of whom are worth a mention.

Nottingham has always been a weird place when it comes to mainstream success as a musician/band. The late 70s/early 80s produced plenty of contenders who should have been massive but managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Anyone remember Medium Medium (signed to Cherry Red), 23 Jewels (had a single of the week in NME), 1,000,000 Fuzz-tone Guitars, The Howdy Boys, None So Blind (their debut single was produced by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics) or Pinski Zoo?

Don't you have Sleaford Mods currently flying the Nottingham flag?

  5. Morning!

Exciting times here on the little ol' Isle of Wight - local heroes Wet Leg are currently smashing it, with one or two others bubbling under. Got me thinking about our musical heritage, and how many great musicians and bands managed to get on the ferry and live the dream. So, who are your hometown heroes? Obviously the London/Liverpool/Manchester contingents are going to be strong, but what about the small towns, or villages even? Here are the IOW's finest:

    Wet Leg

    Coach Party

    Snowy White

David Steele (The Beat / Fine Young Cannibals)

    Jet Harris

    Richard Taylor

    Grade 2

    The Bees

    Jon Thorne

Stu Fisher (Ozric Tentacles / Hole)

    Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley (Hanoi Rocks)

    Mark King

    Phil and Boon Gould

    Delta T

    Go! :)

PS: love the fact that BC autocorrects "D1ck Taylor" to "Richard Taylor"..... Good job F@nny Craddock wasn't from the island....

Good day to you as well , hope you are well .

    Are you gigging much ?

Nope... :D Have a handful of projects on the go, one almost ready but we've had delays due to illness/covid/bereavements, a couple of others just starting. Did an open mic last night, first time in front of a (small) crowd for three years...

    How about you? :)

It’s probably well known that Mark King  was originally a drummer when he was playing as a youngster on the Isle of Wight .
When he moved to London , he blagged a job at Macaris claiming to play bass , ( Macaris did not sell drums ) and that’s where he developed his percussive style of bass playing .
As a resident of the Isle of Wight for the last 20 years , I have not had the pleasure of meeting him , but he is the patron of the IoW bass players society and all round good guy , unlike some of the unpleasant famous people who move down here .

Good day, fellow island dweller. :)

Before you start check the neck is ok. My only experience of an Affinity was a friend’s, he brought to me with a ski jump neck needing help. Totally failed with it, the truss rod was broken. 👎 Seriously not impressed by that range.

    Mine is fine. :)

Tanglewood Warriors have been going down in price over the years, seen a few go for sub £100. The Warrior I is a Warwick Corvette clone with JJ pickups and the Warrior II is a Thumb clone with a single MM pickup. The Warrior 3 is the most interesting as it has an original shape and f-holes:

One went for £80 last month, normal price is £120 - £200:

    Infinity vibes...

  10. I had an Ibanez ATK 310 (the mint green one). Not a particularly good looking bass, but that pickup did a fine impression of a Stingray, and was easily the nicest neck I have ever played. Not that common right now, and Ibanez would do well to reintroduce it into their range. The only one I've ever really regretted selling.

  11. I've modded a VM Squier P bass before - new pups, Ki0gon loom, but the loom was probably the most expensive part of the mod. Ended up moving it on purely because my head had been turned by something else. Can't say it won't happen again, but GAS is a terrible thing... ;)

  12. Afternoon all,

I have a Squire Affinity jazz bass that I'm thinking of modding, but would like some opinions on whether you lovely people think it's worth spending money on (as it's an Affinity)

I have a shopping list in my head:

John East pre-amp (J Tone model)

    Compatible pickups (EMG/Barts/Nords)

    Headstock re-shape

Paint strip and re-finish (with matching headstock)

Eventual replacement of bridge and machineheads.

The paint job and re-shape will have to be done professionally, as I don't have the tools/room to do it. The body and neck are all good and straight, although I won't know if the body is a 1/2/3 piece job until I strip it.

    Thoughts..?

    :)

  13. AC is right though - we are the men of the band, especially if your band is full of men. I'm in three men bands, but we're all as menly as each other. We strike our strings and hit our skins with such menly force, sometimes other men are scared of our power. And occasionally the non-men who see us wield our menly instruments pass comments such as "why has your guitar only got 4 strings?", or "my other half plays guitar, his is blue".

    Grrrrrr......

  14. Watched this the other night, really enjoyed it. One thing that struck me though was Eddie Vedder's interview where he says part of the reason he felt guilty about Pearl Jam's success was that there were many other bands from Seattle that should've had the same amount of exposure as his band.

Having watched the film I feel that the reason PJ, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and AIC were massive was because they were great bands with great songs. A lot of the bands featured in the documentary were actually pretty uninteresting and not that great.

  15. If you can find one, the Tokai Rockinbetters are supposed to be pretty decent. A friend of mine plays an Ibanez copy and that sounds great. There is a facebook page called Rickenfakers, there's loads of resource on there. :)
