1. I seem to recall reading an Interview with Norman Watt Roy, where he went to Trevor Horn's studio to have a look at this new bit of kit he'd bought called a Fairlight sampler. To try it out TH got NWR to play his Alembic through it. The next time NWR heard his bass sound, was when either Relax or Two Tribes came out. His words were "I'd recognise the sound of my Alembic anywhere!" Or something like that anyway... :P

Why? Because they wanted to escape from it?

No, because it was very red and shiny and 80's looking...you had to be there... ;)

Nice score, that p/g looks fine in the photo.

It's brown tortoise shell but has a weird orange colour (almost flourescent) underneath the brown. I'll live with it for now, but will probably change it at some point.

Always nice to get a new bass. I've owned SX gear before, and they're grand bits of kit, highly recommended. I've never seen a SX bass with a proper Fender styled headstock before. Unless of course you have a very early model? I know they had to change them because of a lawsuit from Fender. Somebody more experienced I'm sure will pipe in and give the full story.

If I'm going to buy a Fender copy, it has to have the correct (or very near) shaped headstock, don't know why, it just has. Can't be doing with pointy things (unless it's one of those Schecter Model-T's) Ian also had a very nice used Squier P-Bass Special with the J pick-up for the same price as the SX but I'm a purist (kind of) and it was P only or nothing for me. :D

5. So I've been looking for a cheap(ish) precision bass for a while now, as a back up and occasional gigger. I've looked at (mainly) Fenders and Squiers on the net, but always prefer to buy "in person" if possible. So today I went down to my local guitar emporium where I tried out a VM Squier P (white with black guard) which was very nice, for £259, and then this:

SX Vintage Series Precision bass in 3TSB and a rather naff colour tort pickguard (that's going...). Lighter than the Squier but sounds great, gig bag included for £159 new! Pleased I am...:)
Thanks to Ian at Strings Guitar Centre Isle of Wight for sorting me out!

Shame it has to be a P bass. Jose's ASAT copy looks to be a hell of a bargain if you're watching the pennies.

That's a sweet bass. but, yes, it does have to be a P. I have a mexican jazz which I love, and I have seen some good mexican P's recentley, but I'm not sure how much cash I'm going to have until a couple of week's time. Love the fiesta red squier 60's CV P bass, but people seem to be hanging on to them...:)

7. P-bass with limited funds. I'm not in any rush for one, so I'm just scoping out the for sale section on here, plus ebay and my local free ad website. I liked the look of the Deacon....onwards and upwards! :)

I see the seller is trying to convince the Q&A guy that (despite the caveat of not having looked) the body might in fact be maple  ... but definitely not mahogany

The Q&A guy is me. :) Thanks for the input guys, still looking....

9. I fancy having a punt on this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Precision-bass-Jim-Deacon-custom-zebra-pickups-and-full-set-up-/190674765505?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2c651a06c1

It looks really good for the price and the seller seems quite knowledgable. Does anyone have any experience of these basses?

He has has also got quite a fascinating story for the film to call on, so it could cross over to the mainstream and appeal to people who have never heard of him!

People are always fascinated by the best in any particular field and when you can throw in a rags to riches story with a tragic ending there is always a chance of it catching the imagination of a wider audience....

What he said. :)

11. Hi Bri,

You're right, the GK MB210 doesn't have a detatchable head, but do you need it to be removable? It's an advantage if you're doing sessions or whatever, so you can keep "your sound", but the MB210 only weighs 16kg in total, which, believe me, is an incredible advantage when it comes to getting your gear in and out of venues. My bass goes over my shoulder (straps, y'see..) case for accessories in one hand, amp in the other! Simples! Gear moved in one hit - definitely good when it's raining...
I haven't tried the Promethean, the MarkBass is out of my price range and the Harley Benton is a little too cheap (I'm such a snob...) so I can't really comment on those amps, but the GK does what I want it to. I use a passive jazz bass, played fingerstyle it is incredibly warm sounding, played with a pick, it sounds hard, with plenty of attack. The bottom end is tremendous for a 2 x 10, so much so that I intend to buy a stand for it as a lot of the low end goes through the floor. So, to recap - 16kg, 300w, £480. You pay yer money, you makes yer choice. I love it. :D

12. I have a Gallien Krueger MB210 combo - 300w and 16kgs. I paid £480 for mine new last summer, and that was the cheapest deal I could find. This amp has buckets of bottom end, is quite warm sounding, but has a "hard" sound to it (as opposed to "harsh"). I love it for all the above reasons but mainly because I can pick it up with one hand. I too was fed up with lugging 4 x 10 cabs around. Not good when you have a knackered back.

I hear ya, but there is a kind of Dolphinesque elegance to the design, especially the old "Pro 2" which came in solid colours.
This is just a little reminiscent of a Dolphin, right?...

That is postively Dali-esque. But they are odd looking things. I've said this before on another thread, but as for single-cuts - they remind me of sperm whales. Sea-bound mammals ahoy! :)
