    I do like a bit of slap (MK, SZ, Flea), but I am a bit rubbish at it to be honest. I've never had to play in a slap stylee in any of the bands I've been in, but I do think it is a valid technique and not something that should be swept under the carpet and be ashamed of. The thing that makes me laugh is when you go on YouTube, and see all these berks with their LED's blazing away, with the same amp settings, FX settings and even the same string gauge as MK, just imitating him. I mean, good effort and all that, but really...

    I started off with the drums (had lessons for a couple of years) and was inspired by the mighty Phil Gould (Level 42), as well as his more famous colleague Mark King. As I gradually fell out of love with the drums, I became more and more drawn toward the bass guitar and big fat bass grooves in general. I put off buying a bass for a number of years though, because when I was a toddler, I badly burned 3 of my fingers on my left hand, and the resulting skin grafts left me with restricted "span", so I thought I'd never be able to master the bass. It wasn't until I turned 18 and left home for college, (in glamourous Basingstoke) hooked up with a couple of musical dudes, one of whom had a P-bass. I tried it out and realised that not only could I play the thing, I blimmin loved it too, and promptly went out to the local music emporium and purchased a Sunn Mustang package deal. I then spent the next 2 years glued to this plank, my studies suffered and I've never looked back. Never fancied the guitar though, too much gurning involved... :D

    Not sure if this is the right forum but anyway...

    Does anyone here know the Bass Doc? I've been messaging him regarding a pickguard he was making for me, but I now haven't heard anything since October 5th. Was wondering if anyone could get hold of him to see if he's OK.

    Replacement pickguard

    Hi all,

    I'd like to replace the pickguard on my SX P-bass, but I can't find one that will fit. I've bought a single ply one to try, but the problem is that the area cut for the neck pocket isn't deep enough. This means that it won't fit over the pickup. None of the screwholes line up either. I've also tried the one from my VM Squier and this doesn't fit for the same reasons. The SX one is supposedly based on the Fender 62 P but I don't know if this applies as far as the pickguard.
    I'd would preferably like a 3 ply brown tort, as the tort one that came with the bass is just plain nasty - it has a horrible orange colour in it and just looks wrong. I have attached a diagram of my current one with measurements for the neck pocket and pickup aperture, I've left the control and screwholes as I can drill these myself.
    If anyone can help for a reasonable price, then let me know.

    IOW Festival 1968

    I have a book called "Isle of Wight Rock" and it's a compendium of quotes from local bands (and some of the major players that visited here) from the skiffle explosion of the 50's up until 1994 (just before it was published). Halcyon Order are mentioned in the section on the three early festivals (68, 69 and 1970). A great read if you can find a copy (apparently only 1000 were printed). Very cool that your uncle played that first festival - did you know it was organised to raise funds for a swimming pool? :lol:
