But, really, buying secondhand will get you so much more bass for your dollar.  And if you are buying blind you can't go wrong with a Yamaha BB424 which leaves you some change.

    This.

There are some lovely used basses available for around £400.

I bought a Japanese Bacchus Craft Series jazz style bass on Basschat last year for £450.00 & it's up there with the very best basses I've owned.

  2. The last couple of gigs I did before knocking the whole business on the head was with a CMD121P combo.

I was amazed how well it coped with a full band, no problems at all.

A couple of other people used it so I was able to hear how good it sounded out front too.

    Excellent amp.

Yes, it’s the Alembic. Going to an excellent home in the USA.

I probably should have clarified that weight is the bass in it’s case, but nothing else.

Those Spyder cases are unbelievably solid. I’m sure if you had a good few of them you could make a decent fallout shelter 😂

I figured that the Alembic in it's case with the power supply & stuff (if this model has one, that is) would be pretty weighty.

Finding a few spare hours to run through a set up video with a bass in front of me is on my slightly fuzzy, mental wish-list but it keeps getting knocked down by life.

This one looks good for starters. Any other suggestions?

There are lots of really good videos on the Stewmac website, covering all manner of set-up, repair & finishing topics from beginner to advanced.

I suppose it's possible. Unlikely, but possible.

For myself, I like the idea of John Hall amending his Twitter profile to 'Ret'd musical instrument maker, hellacious scourge of counterfeiters, learning Welsh'

He should change his name to Ioan Llys.

Llys has a few different meanings in Welsh - one of them is "Hall" or "Court", another one just happens to be "Slime" or "Mucous"... 😶

I'm not sure what happened to the Vantage because it was not long after our in-person transaction that the Bbc shed the bonds of BassChat and went far away, possibly to a farm in Wales.

He's not shacked up with John Hall is he?

If the OP is paddling in the waters of 70's-80's Jap basses it might be worth thinking about the Vantage brand (Matsumoku?). They were around for a fair length of time, came with various pick-up configs and they tend to cost less than their better known contemporaries.

There's a single pup Vantage on UK eBay right now for £295 or make an offer: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255201400775?hash=item3b6b3057c7:g:9NMAAOSwpjBhe8sk

I had a double P Vantage (like the one below) for a few years. Really well constructed, played nice, sounded good. Sold it to the BigBeefChief for about £100-£150 ten years ago.

    Vantage: Nice

    That's nice.

Vantage were really good quality instruments.

Glad you got it sorted @fleabag.

Nowhere near the weight you were originally told, but I’m just about to ship a bass that is over 40lb without any packing added yet….and it’s going overseas.

I’m glad I’m not paying for the shipping 😂

    Is that the Alembic?

Its alright.  He saw 168 lbs on his scales and then converted online to KG's.   I think he missed the decimal point  , 16.8 lbs.   It must be an old fashioned weighing machine if it doesnt show KG's

    Phew etc

    16.8lbs?

Must be a late 70s Precision then.
