  1. Back in the day a good pop cover band sounded good because of one thing... a top draw keyboard player. Way more fun than a backing track and you can go where you like. Played with many over the years. One memorable one was a guy with a Rhodes and little casio type thing on top for strings....We sounded great doing old school disco, soul and funk.
  2. 68? Thgt the bridge anomaly started in 70. Anyway its a just a bog standard P bass from the era...having said that a good one is a keeper.
  3. I played a 77 black/maple for ten years in the 80's...nothing special at all. I've played subs which were better, nicer. A heck of a lot hyperbole out there in guitar land.
  4. Reckon Lennon would have made it his next single after Woman..its got that early 80's Lennon vibe ....Doesnt really sound like the Beatles.
  5. Isn't it. Can play that lazy groove all day....so much space, with each note full of purpose. When you get the feel right its just soooo heavy and tight....love it.
  6. Open the windows and plug in...bass playing paradise.
  7. U know the day has come when even in a tricky bit ur looking around the stage or out into the crowd yawning and not paying attention in the slightest.....That was the day I packed it all in. Anyway back to those questioning an unusual vocal. There's a world of difference between beeing blatantly out of tune and having an unusual vocal style. Bit like Picasso versus Constable. Boy George has never sung a single note in tune ever but he sounds brilliant....Ferry too and the rest..Its an important distinction
  8. This. Just clocked the Thin Lizzy guys on YT with Brian Downey who still can play as he did, and the others are just top notch, specially the singer....and, visually it all hangs together too...so yes, as an eg, works superbly.
  9. Way I see it is...some people can pull it off..others most certainly cannot. Some bands are totally of their time. They were what they were because when they were new they epitomised the youth scene of the time and its that young image that made them what they were (ok a right mouthful), I know what Im trying to say. Having said that u have to hand it to Jagger and Co. How Mick does it is a mystery..He's still the greatest frontman in the entire pop business but do I wanna go see them..nope. Same with the Pistols. They blew my mind bk in 77, but tubby old geezers doing that stuff now, not for me. But yes, nostalgia, we all love it, long may it last.
  10. Sorry to hear this. Broke up with long term partner four years ago and I still haven't got to over it, and yes like you I didnt want to go near the bass at all, ...however one day early last yr I suddenly had the urge to play again.....The mind wants to heal itself and it does so in tiny increments, even more so when there is a creative neccessity. Your time will come when your ready, it really will.
  11. Love that Madman clip. The crowd just sat quietly, completely amazed at what their hearing and seeing. And yes they were a great band indeed...and its easy to forget just what a soulfull groovy performer Elton was in those early days
  12. New Virgin ad aimed at all ages....Karma Chamelon. Anyway not surpised, old stuff is happier sounding and just sounds more interesting than todays dishwater. There I said it...took two pages.
  13. The concept of better is really an endless circle. Ahead of you someone is better, behind you someone who's not. Flash doesnt much interested me, but if you can play...'One' with feel and delivery then you've got my attention.
  14. Im not aiming this at BD specifically but Ive been in and out of guitar shops my entire life and yes its the same ole thing..total disinterest in the customer in the majority. And that's the thing, and I cannot believe nobodys mentioned it.....Working in a guitar store has to be the most frustratingly miserable way to earn a living imaginable. Kids coming in twiddling this and that then leaving without buying anything, that constant cacaphony all day everyday. I almost like the bad customer attitude is part of the game...its part and parcel of the deal. Dealing with a guitar store is gonna be an unpleasant experience, its the way it is. I almost applaud the staff for showing disinterest....probably keeps them sane at the end of the day.
  15. Philly Freedom for eg. The tone, ghost notes and overall bass musicality...very tasty.
  16. The soundscape on this is as fresh as a daisy, such a clean musical production....aah the good ole days...
  17. Having a go and learning ur fav tunes by ear in ur bedroom is fun and amazing.... BUT as already mentioned it will only get you so far.... If you have any aspirations to becoming a professional musician then you need to get a book and learn to read notation. 'Resist' trying to play everything by ear and learn ur scales and appegios from the get go. I say all this from bitter experience.....ie, I took the long and painful way to get to a place where I could play anything and where the phone would ring on a regular basis. By all means at the end of a gruelling study session click on a fav tune and have fun but not at the expense of learning properly.
  18. Just had a another listen....very nice indeed, and as I said earlier gotta be in the mood. Bit a box of chocolates...Im hearing Lee Ritenour, Wayne Shorter and a ton of other American mid 80's A listers. Kinda had the feeling no one is doing this stuff anymore. Its good to hear but it has all been done before, still hats off to them for keeping it alive.
  19. Thats two of us then, and not a thing "ordinary" folk kinda talk about or understand. Ive had the same problem..started in my early late 30's ...Hypersensitive to just about anything and everything, big struggle living in the modern world.. The only plugs I can gaurantee work for me nowdays are those awful purple +30db industrial ones which pretty well block out all noise....albeit at the same time making me look like a martian or something...but it has to be done. Even practising my cello I have to wear some ER20's.. Luckily Ive managed to deal with the light thing by using prescription reactalights...but noisy kids, babies, motor transport, public places people in general....haha ..has me running to the nearest public library!
  20. The ads Im seeing are full of 20-30 somethings.. and even younger.
  21. Was trying to think of those two....ELO popped up the other night too....countless others I cant remember.
  22. Seems every other TV ad aimed across the demographic at the mo is using "old" music from the golden years. Why?....And yes Iam playing Devils Advocate here to some extent.
  23. Difficult, progressive, modern jazz, basically a showcase vehicle for accomplished musos to show their brilliant reading chops.....I dig it but Ive gotta be in the mood...sadly not at the mo.
  24. Remain calm. Your preference was to leave a sarcastic emoji after commenting on the Beatles intonation?...( I have never in my entire life heard anyone comment on The Beatles intonation before) Thats good enough for me.
