  1. I am selling my Tech 21 XXL bass pedal. I bought it last summer on Ebay and only used it a few times at home. The pedal is in good condition and currently stored safely in its original box in a pet and smoke free house. Shipping costs are included (UK only, sorry!) using a decent courier.

About the pedal (from the Tech 21 NYC website - https://www.tech21nyc.com/archive/xxl-bass/ )

“Obese, megalithic, dynamic distortion is what it’s all about. The XXL’s Warp™ control manipulates the structure and balance of odd and even harmonics and influences their relativity to the dynamics of your instrument and your playing style. Translation: you can achieve a variety of results, even within the same setting, depending on the manner and force of your pick attack. Originally in production from 1995-2000, some guitar players considered the XXL a little too over-the-top(!). Oddly enough, certain bass players seemed to like it just fine. So we decided to split the atom and try to make both camps happy.

The Bass Edition features a level-compensated Tone control. At maximum it’s flat. As you go towards the mid point, it boosts the low end, compensating for the drop-out typically associated with effects not specifically voiced for bass. Decreasing from the mid point cuts highs, without changing the output level. The Bass Edition is an excellent companion to the SansAmp Bass Driver DI, especially for those times when considerably more distortion is desired.”

According to Tech 21’s founder, Andrew Barta, Jason Newsted used the XXL pedal in Metallica and when Robert Trujillo joined the band, they made him buy the pedal too (see here, from 07:45 )

  2. I am selling my mint Origin Effects BASSRIG Super Vintage pedal. I bought it here on BC in February and only used it a few times at home. It is in pristine condition. It is currently stored safely in its original box in a pet and smoke free house. The price is firm as I am only asking for what I paid for it. Shipping costs are included (UK only, sorry!) using a decent courier.

About the pedal (from the Origin Effects website - https://origineffects.com/product/bassrig-super-vintage):

The BASSRIG Super Vintage is, quite simply, a complete vintage bass amp in a pedal. Based on the iconic Ampeg® SVT®, we have used all-analogue circuitry to recreate a complete valve amp-style signal path, along with an all-analogue cabinet simulator, giving you all the warmth, feel and drive of this classic bass rig in one small box.

When the SVT® arrived on the scene in 1969, it rewrote the rulebook for purpose-built bass amplification. Thanks to its enormous power, deep bass, growling overdrive and purposeful control set, this tower of tone has remained the amp of choice for the most discerning bassists on the world’s biggest stages.

With XLR and ¼” outputs, the BASSRIG Super Vintage will fit seamlessly into any signal chain, no matter how simple or complex, and our powerful Amp Out EQ tailors your sound to work with any amp, meaning you never have to compromise on tone.

    FEATURES LIST:

    ·         Complete valve amp-style signal path with dedicated class-A preamp and push-pull output stage, based on the Ampeg® SVT

    ·         Balanced DI output with analogue cabinet simulator based on the Ampeg® SVT® 8×10 cabinet

    ·         Reactive design simulates interaction between amp and speaker for realistic feel and authentic sound

    ·         Full range of SVT® tones from clean to overdriven

    ·         Powerful tone-shaping Amp Out EQ

    ·         Blend control lets you mix your drive sound in parallel with your clean signal

    ·         Tour-grade, all-metal construction

    ·         High-impedance, buffered bypass with silent switching

    ·         Designed and built in England

    THE DETAILS:

The BASSRIG Super Vintage uses the same ground-breaking circuitry found in our other Analogue Amp Recreation pedals, replicating the entire signal path of the SVT® and delivering all the tone shaping, drive and character of this historic amp with stunning realism.

In addition to all the familiar controls from the world’s favourite bass amp, we’ve added a BLEND knob, which mixes in some of your clean signal in parallel with the pedal’s emulated amp circuit. This control can add some subtle, low-end clarity or be used to create massive bi-amp-style overdrive tones.

The balanced DI output on the BASSRIG Super Vintage is equipped with an all-analogue simulation of Ampeg®’s famous 8×10 speaker cabinet – essential to the SVT® sound. You can select whether the cabinet simulator is always active or only on when the pedal is engaged, meaning you can use the BASSRIG to add cabinet simulation to other pedals or keep an unaffected DI signal when the pedal is in bypass.

Our proprietary Amp Out EQ lets you tailor the BASSRIG’s ¼” Amp Out, so you never have to compromise your amp settings to flatter the pedal or vice versa. With LF and HF trimmers, as well as a HORN CUT switch, this post-drive filter can fatten up small combos, tame boominess in big cabs prevent harshness with tweeter-equipped rigs. This allows you to match your on-stage sound to your DI signal, balance your clean and overdriven tones or compensate for ever-changing backline amps.

Housed in a hand polished, brushed stainless steel enclosure and furnished with aluminium controls, Neutrik® jack sockets and heavy-duty footswitch, the BASSRIG Super Vintage is equally at home on the road and in the studio.

  3. C'mon guys, can someone please buy this bass asap? I am still looking at it and I really, really shouldn't.

It is a gorgeous looking US Spector, with some cool upgrades, played by the great Steven Wilson and the price is super fair too. Same as a new Ethos HP and "less" than a new Dimension HP, both made in Korea! What's not to like?

One of my absolute favorite bass players, with one of my absolute favorite bass tones, from one of my absolute favorite bands.

Same here, huge fan since 96. Interesting to see that his tech is changing his strings even during a gig. Maybe I should change my strings a bit more often too 😉

Are those DCs in the NS-4? How is the neck compared to the Starr?

The NS-4 has the EMG 35P4 in the neck and the DC in the bridge position. Great combo. The neck is fine. Not too thin, not too chunky.

The Mike Starr neck is nice too, maybe it is modelled on Mike's NS-2, which is probably a Kramer era model. I don't know as I have never owned a Kramer era Spector. Maybe someone should sell me one, yes, @cetera I am looking at you 😉

Interestingly, I played both the Mike Starr Euro and a 40th anniversary Euro side by side at a London Bass Guitar Show. Huge neck shape differences. The 40th anniversary one had a pretty chunky neck and most Euros I've since come across have rather chunky necks but not all. There is some heterogeneity/variability. However, for me who prefers the thin neck specs (with the normal 1.64'' nut width, not the DW 1.5''), it is safer to either get a Kramer era Spector or the Ian Hill that also has a thin neck.

Great pair I must say. And an admirable self-discipline....I could never get down to two Spectors... too much sentimental value to some of them in my collection.

The Mike Starr signature bass is my only "not for sale" bass. I am a huge AIC fan and this one has the US HAZ 9V preamp. Sounds killer.

The NS-4 is my birthday bass (although I was not born in 06, wish I were ; -) Interestingly, on Nov 11 2006 I actually started my bass journey by buying a NOS Warwick Corvette in Soundcontrol Manchester (actually it is Salford, which is in Greater Manchester). Spookily, the NS-4, as I found out when I changed the pickup), also went to Soundcontrol (one of 4 in natural that went to the UK, according to PJ Rubal) but the Glasgow store where the guy who sold it to me bought it in 2007.

  7. So, I am finally down to two basses. Both Spectors, of course 😉

As all good things come in threes, does anyone have an Ian Hill (the PJ version) they want to part with?

Honestly that's a five minute fix. It's a bit of a design fault on the Musicmans. I've had the same happen to both my stingrays and just replaced them with:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322826391603

The main thing is to make sure none of the battery acid leaked into the preamp, but even that is not too hard to replace.

Thanks and good to know. Well, grab yourself a bargain, so I can get myself a 2EQ with a contoured body 😉

  9. I am selling this 2004 Music Man USA SUB 4 bass in black. A you probably know, the SUB basses were made for only a few years back in the early 00s and were EBMM’s “no-frills” Stingray, made in the same factory in California as the regular Stingray. Apparently EBMM stopped making them as they were losing money on them. Some differences: poplar body, slab body (like the pre-EBMM Stingrays and the Classics nowadays), a less expensive textured finish, and a metallic pickguard. As far as I know, the pickup and the 2 band EQ are the same as on the regular SRs.

I was very happy to win it in an auction on Ebay a few weeks ago (Jan 2024). I cleaned it thoroughly, oiled the lovely looking rosewood fretboard and at first it sounded great. However, after some time, it suddenly sounded distorted, like having a built-in distortion pedal (like the DarkRay). I checked online and found out that a weak battery can cause it. I checked the battery only to find out that it had expired in 2012! Could not believe it. The battery had clearly leaked and one of the wires had come off. The battery lid is damaged as well. There are also some scratches (mostly on the back of the neck, difficult to photograph but please check the photos), a dent and several touch-ups. Fortunately, apart from the issues described above, it plays well (no fret buzzing, noisy electronics, neck issues etc.). The bass weighs 4.1kg, which is not too bad either for a SUB.

I was able to clean the inside of the battery box, but I cannot fix the battery issue and do not have a luthier nearby (i.e., I would not only have to pay the luthier but would also have significant taxi costs for dropping off and picking up the bass as I do not have a car). Maybe it is an easy fix (e.g., just resoldering the black wire), worst case scenario could be routing the cavity for the battery box a bit bigger to fit a different type of box in. Moreover, I am not really a fan of the slab body and will rather get a 2 EQ SR with a contoured body instead (maybe trade?). Therefore, I rather sell it to someone who has the skills and equipment to fix the issue and who can bag themselves a great bargain. We all know how much new SRs go for nowadays (£3k plus!) and I am only asking for what I paid for it. I am even throwing in a new hard case for safe transport. The case itself cost £80 (https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Electric-Bass-ABS-Case-Rectangular-by-Gear4music/FM7)

Collection would be recommended but I can also ship it (UK only, sorry!) using a decent courier. Shipping would of course add some costs (approx. £20/30).

Well that has fair upset me.

Three new colours for the Bongo and they're all crap. Lime green? I'm a middle aged man with prostate issues, not a skateboard kid in a punky ska band. If it was Seafoam Green with a maple board EBMM could have my money right now. Or Fiesta Red or something else a bit more classic.

EBMM Blood Orange is essentially Cherry Sunburst ( not my thing)and Titan Grey is not my cup of tea either. What a waste. And presumably the Bongo is excluded from the custom options they are threatening for the Stingray Special.

Sorry to have upset you. However, good news is that the green one is not called lime green but "mantis green". Any better? 😉

It's also a bit disappointing that EBMM have started treating the Bongo a bit like a ginger haired stepchild. Only two crap colours and one pickup configuration available ect. Ironically, the Bongo would look great in some of these new finishes.  I love the Bongo and would  cheerfully buy another if EBMM would make the effort to tempt me.

Looks like they have something to tempt you after all:

3 new colours for the Bongo: lime green (don't know which fancy name EBMM will give it) with maple fretboard, blood orange (with rosewood fingerboard) and one in satin grey (called titan grey)

New features: maple fretboard on the lime coloured one (first time ever, according to AJ), oil and wax finish, and stainless steel frets

2 new Darkray colours too: dark rainbow and gold bar.
