So.. it's been a few months & people have mentioned a couple of times how harsh i was in my initial post about the bass. I guess i was writing from a place of frustration & stress.. I mainly play a Cort B4FL these days, but every now and then i will bring out the Jim Harley.. and it's actually a very cool bass. Plenty of mojo. Played it last night & haven't had to tune it again since last month when i put it away. I was considering selling it for a bit of cash as i also plan to move in the next few months from Spain to France, but then again, those second hand platforms here in Spain are horrible & i'd rather give the bass away to a friend here. I am glad i spent the time fixing it, & i am sure he will like it. I've recieved compliments at rehearsals and on instagram or even in this thread about the sounds i was getting out of that bass & playing it last night made me feel i need to make things right by posting about it. It is a great player, with a fast neck, that makes all the right noises, despite the name on the headstock & the negative reviews on Audiofanzine. Obviously, mine has almost nothing in common anymore with whatever came out of the factory hehe... Anyway.. those are my conclusions. Am glad i brought it back to life!

Hello everyone! Just read through this thread & i would mention RMI also, although Mark Ramsay is not UK based anymore. He has his own designs but is not afraid to experiment if a customer requests it. I used to own an RMI Quantum Dominic Di Piazza Signature 6-string bass &, while i had it, the BTB846SC, AGBV205A, Swamp Ash Sire P7 5-string & Fame Baphomet were mostly gathering dust. I had to consciously force myself to play them every few days. I eventually had to sell everything off due to... uh... life... but i really recomment RMI... So cool! How is it in terms of ergonomics? What about weight? And how is the sound now that U have fixed the pick-up issue??

I used to own a 6 string version of it. It was a good bass, very versatile within the "modern" realm of bass sounds. Really heavy though. I could achieve a very low action on most strings except for the high C string that had the saddle resting flush on the bridge, which kinda made the string be in the way constantly. Super tight B string due to the 35" scale (or so the experts tend to say), sounded great & chordal playing was very doable. I am no virtuoso though. Ended up selling to finance another more expensive bass. But i do recommend it. I had three or four basses back then & i would constantly play that one.

Can we assume that other brands such as Cort, Ibanez, Sire etc will also be affected & will have to lower prices to reach their sales objectives? Or is it just an isolated case due to the fact that those are stamped 40th Anniversary and that the anniversaey year is now behind us?

Nope, i gave it away to a guy who wanted to mod a Bronco... Further down the line when i have money & time i might go back to a through body bridge (the holes are still there), change the pick-ups or ground the poles, & refinish the whole thing Pehlam Blue or Dark Lake Placid Blue.. but that'll probably be in 2024...

Funny.. the couple that gave it to me are French. My only other friend who knows about the brand is French. And Audiofanzine, where i found a couple of very negative reviews, is also a French forum (i believe)... It's not a bad bass, in fact, after all the work i've put into it... The neck is super nice, frets are super shallow, which is new to me, but happy to report there are no pokey ends... There is one thing i hate though, which i've only had with one other bass before: It's that i really need to be careful not to touch the pole pieces when i am playing or my ears regret it instantly.. Is a pick-up upgrade necessary?

Hey y'all! Due to financial issues, I was down to zero playable basses for the last three months.. This Jim Harley Pbass copy was given to me pre-Covid by a couple of friends after it had sat in a garage for 10+ years. Metal parts were rusty, pots were scratchy, the bumpy pickguard would come off everytime U'd pull the jack out... It's made of really shitty soft wood (is it even wood?) and the screws were just spinnin' in there like there was nowhere to cling to lol... Pics of the bass before & now below: - Guyker bridge with brass saddles (no through body option, sadly enough, but that'swhat i had so that's what i had to work with), - Squier CV tuning machines, - Harley Benton strap pins & knobs, - MusicLily CTS 500k pots, - Ancable input jack, - Sprague Orange Drop capacitor (0.047uF), - copper tape shielding - cloth covered wiring & - D'Addario Nylon Tapewound strings. This will have to do until i get smthg better.. Hopefully soon... Aesthetically not really different.. i do plan to refinish it in Pehlam Blue or Dark Lake Placid Blue with dark red tortoise pickguard if it turns out i like the bass a lot.. I am curious though. I can't find much online about Jim Harley as a brand. There are a few really dreadful reviews of this bass on Audiofanzine in France for instance.. but other than that... Does anyone know anything? Where it was manufactured, etc? There is a sticky area behind the headstock on mine where it seems a sticker was at some point, probably indicating country of origin & serial number.. but it's been removed... Before: After:
