@Steve_M that's an impressive workload. Are you full time at this not that it matters its still quite an achievement. Well done sir.

    Dave

Not full time - I do have a day job but, as a freelancer in Broadcasting, I get a fair bit of downtime. It does seem like a lot when it's written down like this but it's what I do to relax and as yet I've not felt overwhelmed (👈 kiss of death right there)!

  2. Hadn't thought about it until reading this thread made me think about it....

On top of the usual rehearsal schedule to keep 'em fresh - (Pop Orchestra - around 35 tunes, function band - around 120 tunes, 3 originals bands - around 50 tunes total) at the mo it's:

27 Eagles songs for a potential seat in a touring tribute - TBC

25 Kylie tunes for a dep seat in a touring tribute

Writing 10 basslines for a Singer/Songwriter project about to go on the road

Had to learn Stratus, Behind The Veil & Savannah Woman for an impromptu party gig last week with about 48hrs notice.

    Always in the shed 🙂

  3. My main is a NYC Satin Deluxe 5-21 from 2019, bought new from Mark at Bass Direct. It had something all my other basses didn't. Can't explain it - feels right, balances well, cuts through, makes me sound good. Never have to fight to get a good sound. It sounds amazing before you plug it in too! Probably something to do with the chambering and the tonewoods - it's more acoustic than any other basses I've owned. Liked it so much I eventually sold my Fodera & my USA Jazz as they just weren't getting played. Sure it's expensive and yes, there's plenty of other Marques out there that offer a similar/same experience. Playing a bass is a personal thing though, right? What's great to me, you might hate and vice versa. My advice - track one down and have a play and try as many others as you can for comparison. If you don't love it immediately, it's probably not for you.

Having said all that, I am interested and curious to try the Vincent Akkurat 5 and the Metropol 5 - they look like they could give a Sadowsky a run for its' money. Anyone got any experience here?

  4. I use headphones a lot as I'm a sound recordist by trade. The trouble with headphone recommending is it's so subjective. What I like, you might hate. You need to try a few to get a sense of what sounds good to you.

Having said that though, I usually mix professionally using HD25's (I still have a couple of pairs of the Irish built ones, before the factory burned down) on location which are great for speech, etc and great for music listening as they do hype the bass by default. Not the best for mixing in my opinion.

Have tried many over the years (DT48/HD25/HD26/DT250/DT100/Ultrasones, etc) and they all have their pros and cons. I have been using Sony HDR7506 for mixing and music at home, after a recommendation by Andrew Scheps, and think they are just amazing for £90! Also like rehearsing/listening on my Shure 535, which are also my IEM's for stage use currently, although these are quite expensive at around £350.

As has been said above, check the impedance of the headphones you're buying. Higher impedance cans don't function well unless they are being driven by a good headphone amp. As a general rule, look for a set under 100 Ohms if you want to use on electronic devices, media players, etc.

Good luck on your journey! Hope you don't have to spend as much as I have over the years 😉

Out of pure interest can you recall whether this was a HAZ Lab and what were the 4 controls in your configuration (mine has EMG's as well)

Not wanting to hijack @MarshallBTB sale thread, but to the best of my recollection it was an 18v Pope 2 band eq (see picture from when it was mine). Controls were Vol with pull passive/blend/bass cut & boost/treble cut and boost.

Really nice board! Shades of Ian Allison, which is no bad thing given how on top of pedals he is. Cool detail about having the US-made VMT too. If I recall correctly too, the P&P is one of a few ODs that Jack Roan at Noble said he’d heard pair well with the Noble when I emailed him asking how best to get a dirty tone.

Thanks! Yes, it's similar to IMA's board. In fact I emailed him today to ask about his Stomp FS4/5 switch - and he emailed back! It's http://www.pedalnetics.com/ if anyone else has struggled to find it. You're correct too about the P&P, Jack did say he thought it plays well with the Noble. He also told me he thought the Noble and the Cali are the dream team - I have to admit it's a cracking pairing, especially with a P Bass. Just that elusive Doom2 to go! Next batch is December - fingers crossed I can bag one.

Boss WL-60 Is great, isn’t it? Really

impressed with the one I picked up on here recently.

Yes I think they're excellent. Bit of a game changer really, after stepping on a cable for over 40 years! Suddenly feels liberating on stage 🙂 Should have done it earlier. I've got 2 transmitters - one for each bass. Just turn off the one not in use. Have had no interference issues (quite big festival stages over the summer) and super easy to set up so no complaints. Rechargeable AA's. Simples.

  8. This is mine at the mo. Really happy with it but still want to replace the Pork & Pickle with a Doom2 if I can ever manage to buy one! Signal chain for the nerds like me out there is:

Wireless receiver > Tuner > Stomp with Cali76 on FX loop 1 & Pork & Pickle > VMT (for stacking dirt) on FX loop 2 > Noble

    Powered by a Cioks DC7

Also should note that the VMT is one of the Spencer Doren built ones.

UPDATE 12/12/23 - SD P/Ups found and added + strings changed

Putting my long time back-up bass out to pasture as it's not getting used - and I want some new cabs!

2014 Fender Nate Mendel P Bass - Mexican made. Purchased by me new in 2014 from GuitarGuitar. It's more worn now than it was originally and I've made various alterations over the years - you may love it or hate it!!

Candy Apple Red, ash body, maple neck, rosewood board on a very slim 'C' neck profile - more like a Jazz bass than a P in my opinion. Full deets in the images from Fenders Serial Check site.

It's completely rewired with CTS pots, Sprague orange drop cap, Switchcraft jack and Formvar wire (had a static buzz/hum from original so started again!)

Had the frets dressed as they weren't great from stock (Fender, huh? 🤷‍♂️)

Swapped the Seymour Duncan QuarterPounders (didn't like them) for stock Lindy Fralins (which I love). I still have the SD's somewhere (UPDATE 12/12/23 - FOUND 'EM!!) and if I can find them will include them in the sale - but no promises. It now sounds like an old school P Bass rather than the 'hot rock' P it was originally intended to be.

Added Hipshot Lightweight Tuners to combat the neck dive - it's quite a light instrument body so all that iron on the headstock wasn't helping the balance. Now it's sits perfectly, although the headstock looks a bit scruffy because of the old holes - but that doesn't bother me (in fact I quite like the aesthetic) 🙂

    Weight now is 3.59kg / 7lb 14oz so is relatively light. For comparison my USA P Bass is 4.3kg / 9lb 4oz

It plays really well, is super light and has a great classic P tone.

Comes with the Fender branded soft case, all the documents it came with, the Foo Fighters neck plate (never fitted), thumb rest (third party) plus all the old tuners, screws and ferrules should you want the old look/weight back.

Also included is an alternate Tort pick guard I got from WD Music.

Currently strung with flats - D'Addario Chromes.

Body condition - as I stated above, it's had a few bumps along the way - not too horrible but certainly more than the factory relic it came with. I added a thumb rest years ago (included) and you can see the screw marks on the body front. I've also sanded the neck down, as is my bent, because I found the lacquer finish too grippy.

I'm looking for £750 for this bass which I think is fair considering these are currently retailing new at around £1,300.

    Not looking to trade.

Collection is preferred from Tunbridge Wells (where you can try before you buy) or meet up within reason. I hate shipping guitars but would consider at buyers risk and cost. I'd estimate that fully insured next day service with a reputable courier is about £50.

    Thanks for looking 🙂

Hi there. Thanks for letting back to me.

Is it strung with the 'rubber' strings? I couldn't tell from the photo. Not a deal breaker.

Also, with no back panel, like some other Kala UBasses, how do you restring it????!

    Thanks

    Andy

Yes it has the original rubber strings. I've never restrung it but I believe you pass the string into the body and tie a knot. Probably a bit fiddly, hence the introduction of the mag plate on the newer models.

Hi there. Lovely looking little bass. I can’t find it on the web. What’s the difference between this and the U-bass? Also I can’t find a ‘mini’ rumbler. Is it a discontinued model? Thanks Andy.

Hi Andy. This is a U-Bass. It's an earlier model (2016) but basically it's one of these:

This is a shot of the label inside the bass.
